Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) chains of a low polydispersity (Mw/Mn similar to 1.1-1.2) have been prepared by cobalt-mediated radical polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc). They have been end-capped by an activated bromide by addition of an alpha-bromoester or an alpha-bromoketone containing nitroxide and converted into effective macroinitiators for the atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene (Sty), ethyl acrylate, and methyl methacrylate. Because each block is formed by a controlled process, well-defined PVAc containing diblock copolymers are easily prepared. The PVAc-b-PS copolymers synthesized from alpha-bromoketone end-capped PVAc can be converted into well-defined poly(vinyl alcohol)-b-polystyrene amphiphiles by methanolysis of the poly(vinyl acetate) block. Self-association of an amphiphilic poly(vinyl alcohol)(3500)-b-polystyrene(16 600) in a (4/1) water/tetrahydrofuran mixture results in the formation of vesicles as observed by transmission electron microscopy. We have analyzed the Cassini Ultraviolet Imaging, Spectrometer (UVIS) observations of the Jupiter aurora with an auroral atmosphere two-stream electron transport code. The observations Of Jupiter by UVIS took place during the Cassini Campaign. The Cassini Campaign included Support spectral and imaging observations by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). A major result for the UVIS observations was the identification of a large color variation between the far ultraviolet (FUV: 1100-1700 angstrom) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV: 800-1100 angstrom) spectral regions. This change probably occurs because of a large variation in the ratio of the soft electron flux (10-3000 eV) responsible for the EUV aurora to the hard electron flux (similar to 15-22 keV) responsible for the FUV aurora. On the basis of this result a new color ratio for integrated intensities for EUV and FUV was defined (4 pi I1550-1620 angstrom/4 pi I (1030-1150 angstrom)) which varied by approximately a factor of 6. The FUV color ratio (4 pi I (1550-1620) angstrom/4 pi (1230-1300) (angstrom)) was note stable with a variation of less than 50% for the observations studied. The medium resolution (0.9 angstrom FWHM, G140M grating) FUV observations (1295-1345 angstrom and 1495-1540 angstrom) by STIS on 13 January 2001, on the other hand, were analyzed by a spectral modeling technique using a recently developed high-spectral resolution model for the electron-excited H-2 rotational lines. The STIS FUV data were analyzed with a model that considered the Lyman band spectrum (B (1) Sigma(u)(+) -> X-1 Sigma(g)(+)) as composed of an allowed direct excitation component (X-1 Sigma(g)(+) B-1 (+)(Sigma u)) and an optically forbidden component (X-1 Sigma(g)(+) -> EF, GK, H (H) over bar,.... (1)Sigma(u)(+) followed by the cascade transition (1)Sigma -> B-1 Sigma(u)(+)). The medium-resolution spectral regions for the Jupiter aurora were carefully chosen to emphasize the cascade component. The ratio of the two components is a direct measurement of the mean secondary electron energy of the aurora. The mean secondary electron energy of the aurora varies between 50 and 200 eV for the polar cap, limb and auroral oval observations. We examine a long time base of Galileo Ultraviolet Spectrometer color ratios from the standard mission (1996-1998) and compare them to Cassini UVIS, HST, and International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) observations. Thermo-sensitive nanosized structures have been prepared in water from poly(methyl vinyl ether)-block-poly(isobutyl vinyl ether) (PMVE-b-PIBVE) block copolymers. The composition and the architecture (diblock and triblock architectures) of the PMVE-b-PIBVE copolymers have been varied. The investigated copolymers had an asymmetric composition with a major PMVE block, While the PIBVE blocks are hydrophobic, the PMVE blocks are hydrophilic at room temperature and become hydrophobic above their demixing temperature (around 36 degrees C) as a result of the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior. At room temperature, the amphiphilic copolymers aggregate in water above a critical micelle concentration, which has been experimentally measured by hydrophobic dye solubilization. The hydrodynamic diameter of the structures formed above the cmc has been measured by dynamic light scattering (DLS) while their morphology has been studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). H-1 NMR measurements in D2O at room temperature reveal that the aggregates contain PIBVE insoluble regions surrounded by solvated PMVE chains. These investigations have shown that polydisperse spherical micelles are formed for asymmetric PMVE-b-PIBVE copolymers containing at least 9 IBVE units. For copolymers containing less IBVE units, loose aggregates are formed. Finally, the thermo-responsive, reversible properties of these structures have been investigated. Above the cloud point of the copolymers, the loose aggregates precipitate while the micelles form large spherical structures. [less ▲]

The ability of several nitrones to control the radical polymerization of styrene at 110 °C has been investigated by high-throughput experimentation. The nitrone/free radical initiator pair dictates the structure of the nitroxide and the alkoxyamine formed in situ, which determines the position of the equilibrium between the active and the dormant species operating in the nitroxide-mediated polymerization. For the styrene polymerization to be controlled, the nitrone must be reacted with 2,2'-azo-bis-isobutyronitrile (AIBN) at 85 °C, prior to addition of styrene and polymerization at 110 °C. The effect of the nitrone structure on the kinetics of the styrene polymerization has been emphasized. Amongst all the nitrones tested, those of the C-phenyl-N-tert-butylnitrone (PBN) type are the most efficient in terms of polymerization rate, control of molecular weight and polydispersity. Electrophilic substitution of the phenyl group of PBN by either an electrodonor or an electroacceptor group has only a minor effect on the polymerization kinetics. Importantly, the polymerization rate is not governed by the thermal polymerization of styrene but by the alkoxyamine formed in situ during the pre-reaction step. The initiation efficiency is, however, very low, consistent with a limited conversion of the nitrone into nitroxide and alkoxyamine. [less ▲]
