We present predictions on the total cross sections and on the ratio of the real part to the imaginary part of the elastic amplitude (rho parameter) for present and future pp and pbar p colliders, and on total cross sections for gamma p -> hadrons at cosmic-ray energies and for gamma gamma-> hadrons up to sqrt{s}=1 TeV. These predictions are based on an extensive study of possible analytic parametrisations invoking the biggest hadronic dataset available at t=0. The uncertainties on total cross sections, including the systematic errors due to contradictory data points from FNAL, can reach 1.9% at RHIC, 3.1% at the Tevatron, and 4.8% at the LHC, whereas those on the rho parameter are respectively 5.4%, 5.2%, and 5.4%. High-resolution optical spectroscopy of CPD -59degrees2636, one of the O-type stars in the open cluster Trumpler 16 in the Carina Nebula, reveals this object to be a multiple system displaying triple lines which we label as components A, B and C of spectral types O7 V, O8 V and O9 V, respectively. From our radial velocity measurements we find that the components A and B form a close binary with a period of 3.6284 d, and we obtain the first circular radial velocity orbit for this system with semi-amplitudes of 184 and 192 km s(-1), leading to minimum masses of 10.1 and 9.7 M-.. We find that the component C is a single lined binary with a period of 5.034 d and semi-amplitude of 48 km s(-1). We also analyse the X-ray radiation from CPD -59degrees2636, finding neither appreciable overluminosity nor phase-related X-ray flux variations. [less ▲]

The importance of core-polarization effects on oscillator strength determination in Ce III is emphasized. The inclusion of these effects in relativistic Hartree-Fock (HFR) calculations leads to theoretical lifetime values for some 4f6p levels of this ion in close agreement with recent time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence measurements. These new atomic data, the most accurate to date, have allowed the refinement of the stellar abundance determination of cerium in the chemically peculiar star HD 192913, but have not altered in a drastic way the conclusions derived in recent analyses regarding the overabundance of this element. A series of new pyridobenzodiazepines with variation of the basic side chain were synthesized and evaluated for their binding to D-4.2, D-2L, and 5-HT2A receptors in comparison with clozapine, haloperidol, and two parent compounds previously described, 8-chloro-6-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-11H-pyrido[2,3-b][1,4]benzodiazepine (8) and 8-methyl-6-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-11H-pyrido[2,3-b][1,4]benzodiazepine (9). In the piperazine series, replacing the N-methyl group by a N-phenyl moiety (15-17, 30-32) provided a dramatic decrease of affinity for all receptors (K-i > 1000 nM). A N-cyclohexyl group (20, 35) restored some affinity. Compounds with a N-benzyl (18, 33) or N-phenethyl side chain (19, 34) had significant affinities at D-4.2 and 5-HT2A receptors. Homologation of the piperazine nucleus (29, 44) led to a significant decrease of the affinity at all receptors investigated. In the 4-aminopiperidine series, N-methyl derivatives (21, 36) possessed less affinity in comparison with the N-metbylpiperazine analogues (8, 9) while the N-benzyl congeners (22, 37) showed similar affinities. The rigidification of piperidine nucleus as obtained in azabicyclo [3.2.1] octane derivatives (23, 38) involved a slight reduction of the affinity at D-4.2 and 5-HT2A receptors while the affinity at D-2L receptors was dramatically increased. The introduction of N-substituted aminoalkylamines to replace N-methylpiperazine generally led to a significant decrease in the affinity for D-4.2 receptors but some of these molecules (24, 25, 41) presented a significant 5-HT2A binding affinity. The presence of a more flexible side chain induced an increased conformational freedom. Consequently, the preferential position of the distal nitrogen or its basicity in piperazine derivatives was greatly modified. 19 with a high D-4.2 and 5-HT2A affinity (K-i = 40 and 103 nM, respectively) did not induce cataleptic phenomenon in the paw test in rats but significantly reduced the immobility time in Porsolt's test in mice suggesting antidepressant properties. The pion structure function is investigated in a simple model, where pion and constituent quark fields are coupled through the simplest pseudoscalar coupling. The imaginary part of the forward gamma*pi --> gamma*pi evaluated and related to the structure functions. It is shown that the introduction of non-perturbative effects linked to the size of the pion and preserving gauge invariance, allows a connection with the quark distribution. It is predicted that higher-twist terms become negligible for Q(2) larger than similar to 2 GeV2 and that quarks in the pion have a momentum fraction smaller than in the proton case. A process for the production of polymers by means of pseudo-living free-radical polymerization is disclosed. The process entails (i) reacting a polymerizable vinyl monomer with nitrogen monoxide and at least one initiator to prepare a free-radical intermediate product, and (ii) polymerizing the intermediate product optionally together with one or more additional monomers and/or with a free-radical initiator.
