We calculate the low energy pipi scattering lengths a(0)(0), a(0)(2), b(0)(0), b(0)(2) and a(1)(1), the coupling of the rho to the pion g(rhopipi), the total width of the rho, the low q(2) behavior of the pion electromagnetic form factor, and the pion scalar form factor within a chiral SU(2)(f) NJL-type Lagrangian where the spin 1 rho meson is generated from a four-quark tensor interaction. Such a simple model avoids the mathematical complication related to pi - a(1) mixing. Two types of regularization are discussed, mainly affecting the values of a(0)(0) and b(0)(0). We find rather good agreement with data. The p meson described in this way does not account for the meson vector dominance model: it does not contribute to the a(0)(0), a(0)(2) scattering lengths, and the charge radius of the pion is mainly ascribed to the bare photon quark coupling. Even if the shape of the electromagnetic form factor is well reproduced, the strong increase near the rho pole does not account for the p --> pipi decay but only reflects the q (q) over bar structure of the rho. [1] Vertical distributions of ozone from June 1996 to November 2000 have been retrieved from high-resolution Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) solar absorption spectra recorded at the primary Network for Detection of Stratospheric Change station of the Jungfraujoch in the Swiss Alps (46.5degreesN, 8degreesE, 3580 m above sea level (asl). The retrievals were performed using the Optimal Estimation Method (OEM), both in a narrow spectral interval (1002.567-1003.2 cm(-1)) and in a broad spectral interval (1000.0-1005.0 cm(-1)) in the O-3 9.6-mum band. A thorough characterization of the retrievals has been performed following the lines of OEM, including an information content analysis, a study of the correlations between retrieved instrumental parameters and retrieved ozone concentrations, and an evaluation of the O-3 profile error budget. It is demonstrated that the information content is significantly higher for spectra in the broad microwindow, resulting in higher vertical resolutions, on the order of 8 km, of the retrieved profiles extending up to 40 km, and less correlations between retrieved parameters. An independent statistical verification of the retrieval results and their characterization has been performed by comparison of the FTIR ozone profiles with independent measurements. These are the ozone profile measurements from balloon soundings at Payerne, from the microwave radiometer at Bern and the lidar at Observatoire de Haute-Provence (OHP), and the total column data from the Dobson spectrophotometer at Arosa. Applying the optimum retrieval procedure in the broad spectral interval, an excellent agreement has been found between the FTIR O-3 profile data and the correlative data. The largest offset of the FTIR data in comparison with the correlative data is found with respect to the lidar data in the 24- to 40-km layer, and is on the order of 5%. No systematic biases have been found in the troposphere, neither in the upper troposphere-lower stratosphere (UTLS) up to 18 km. The dispersion of the relative differences between the data sets, if any, is never larger than half of the natural ozone variability. [less ▲]

A new technique to improve the image quality of Ni replicated X-ray mirror is presented. During the manufacturing of XMM Mirror Module between 1994 to 1999, the classical manufacturing process showed its limits. In 1995, the XMM Mirror Module Qualification Model HEW was around 20 arcsec. In 1998, the fifth Flight Model Mirror Module reached 11 arcsec HEW, with a single mirror shell achieving 8 arcsec HEW. The performance of this technology is namely limited by the integration process of the shells. The new technique is based on the following philosophy : • Firstly, an accurate measurement of each mirror shell after integration. A dedicated metrology system has been built and allows a precise metrology of the actual surface. • Secondly, a modification of the mirror shell and of the support to transfer the stress to a non optical active area. • Finally, an ion figuring run to correct the residual shape error of the mirror. The control and evaluation of the process is assured by EUV PSF assessment achieved in the FOCAL X facility developed for XMM. The advantages of this new process are to shape the mirrors in their final hardware configuration and the versality of the process enabling improvement of other kinds of high accuracy mirrors. Process for depositing by electrografting a strong adherent polymer coating onto an electrically conductive surface comprising an electrochemical grafting at the surface of an active monomer for forming a primer coating P onto said surface and having as general formula: X0 (meth)acrylate wherein X is either part of a preformed polymer or is an intermediate agent for polyaddition reaction or is an anchoring group for attachment of a molecule having at least one complementary reactive group. Such process allows formation of new primer by one-step electro-grafting of a reactive polymer called macromonomer.; Such process also allows further modification of an initial electrografted polymer (called primer coating) to increase the coating thickness by the so-called grafting-from technique i.e. polymerization of a second monomer or to introduce other types of polymers(also called top coating) via covalent attachment between the primer and the top coating through the X ester group by the so called grafting onto technique. Such process also allows to graft onto the primer coating compounds like functional polymer, peptide, protein, oligonucleotide, dyes, drugs, anti-bacterian compounds. [less ▲]

In this note we discuss the breakdown behavior of the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator in the logistic regression model. We formally prove that the ML-estimator never explodes to infinity, but rather breaks down to zero when adding severe outliers to a data set. An example confirms this behavior. Albendazole (ABZ) is a benzimidazole derivative with a broad spectrum of activity against human and animal helminthe parasites. ABZ has a very poor aqueous solubility. This study shows that hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-beta-CD) is able to form inclusion complexes with ABZ and that is able to increase its aqueous solubility. A synergistic effect exists between HP-beta-CD and citric acid. The combination of HP-beta-CD (200 mM) and citric acid (50 mM) allows dissolution of more than 1.5 mg of ABZ per ml. The aim of this study is the in vivo evaluation in sheep of a solution of the inclusion complex of ABZ with HP-beta-CD in comparison with a suspension of the same drug. A significant (P<0.05) increase in the relative bioavailability is obtained with the solution containing the ABZ-HP-beta-CD complex as measured by ABZSO plasma levels. The area under the curve (AUC(0--> proportional, variant )) of the solution is 37% higher than that obtained with the suspension. Likewise the peak plasma concentration (C(max)) is twice that of the solution while the time to reach C(max) (T(max)) is reduced. [less ▲]
