Fatal mural endocarditis and botryomycosis occurred concurrently in a 62-year-old women 4 months after orthotopic heart transplantation. Subsequent to mild mitral regurgitation, infection developed on a left atrial thrombus and was complicated by cerebral embolization. Simultaneously, skin nodules manifested on both forearms. Histologic examination revealed typical aspects of early evolving botryomycosis with massive infiltration of the dermis and hypodermis by necrotic granulomas framed by grains of Gram-positive coccoid forms. Bacteria were decorated by a nonspecific polyclonal antibody to Mycobacterium bovis. [less ▲]

The influence of platelet activating factor (PAF) was investigated in vivo on the ultrastructure of bovine platelets, and on the platelet count. The effect of an intravenous administration of ketoprofen (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) pretreatment followed by PAF infusion was also observed in a group of six healthy male Friesian calves. PAF infusion alone caused a moderate thrombocytopenia, which peaked one minute post challenge and returned to levels not significantly different from control after 30 min. Electron microscopy revealed that after PAF infusion, platelets lost their lentiform shape and became irregular, with many pseudopods. Their microtubules became impossible to distinguish. The numbers of alpha granules and dense bodies were significantly decreased. Glycogen particles became rare or even disappeared. Giant platelets occasionally appeared. The Golgi apparatus was more often visible and the number of mitochondria was significantly increased. Ketoprofen pretreatment lowered PAF-induced thrombocytopenia and decrease in the number of dense bodies. Under these conditions, the Golgi apparatus was rarely visible and giant platelets were not observed. These results showed that the morphological ultrastructure of blood platelets in bovines were modified following PAF infusion and that ketoprofen pretreatment before PAF infusion provided partial protection, limiting the extent of the morphological alterations and maintaining a normal platelet count [less ▲]

We propose an integrated scheme for transient stability assessment which in a sequence screens contingencies and scrutinizes only the selected ones. This scheme is based on a hybrid method, called SIME for Single Machine Equivalent. SIME relies on a particular direct method coupled with time-domain programs so as to combine the strengths of both, namely: the flexibility with respect to power system modelling of time-domain methods; the speed and richer information of the direct method. This paper lays the foundations of SIME, devises appropriate techniques for transient stability assessment per se and for contingency screening, and finally integrates these two techniques in a fully general function, i.e. able to comply with any power system modelling and stability scenario, and to assess any type of stability limits (critical clearing times or power limits). Throughout, real-world examples illustrate the proposed techniques and highlight their performances. [less ▲]

Pleiomorphic adenoma of the salivary glands is a benign epithelial tumour occurring primarily in the major and minor salivary glands. It is by far the most common type of salivary gland tumour. Microscopically, pleiomorphic adenomas show a marked histological diversity with epithelial, myoepithelial and mesenchymal components in a variety of patterns. In addition to a cytogenetic subgroup with normal karyotypes, pleiomorphic adenomas are characterized by recurrent chromosome rearrangements, particularly reciprocal translocations, with breakpoints at 8q12, 3p21, and 12q13-15, in that order of frequency. The most common abnormality is a reciprocal t(3;8)(p21;q12). We here demonstrate that the t(3;8)(p21;q12) results in promoter swapping between PLAG1, a novel, developmentally regulated zinc finger gene at 8q12, and the constitutively expressed gene for beta-catenin (CTNNB1), a protein interface functioning in the WG/WNT signalling pathway and specification of cell fate during embryogenesis. Fusions occur in the 5'-non-coding regions of both genes, exchanging regulatory control elements while preserving the coding sequences. Due to the t(3;8)(p21;q12), PLAG1 is activated and expression levels of CTNNB1 are reduced. Activation of PLAG1 was also observed in an adenoma with a variant translocation t(8;15)(q12;q14). Our results indicate that PLAG1 activation due to promoter swapping is a crucial event in salivary gland tumourigenesis. [less ▲]

To further validate its use in positron emission tomography (PET), we studied the binding of [18F]altanserin, a specific 5HT2 radioligand, in the rat brain using in vivo autoradiography. Distribution of [18F]altanserin binding was comparable to the in vitro mapping of 5HT2 receptors reported in the literature. Selective displacers were used to test the reversibility and the selectivity of this radioligand. Specific binding of [18F]altanserin in the rat frontal cortex was quantified by direct counting with an electronic imaging system and by quantification on digitalized autoradiograms. Close results of about 30 pmol/g were obtained with both methods. Our data confirmed that [18F]altanserin is a valid tracer for 5HT2 receptors binding studies. [less ▲]

This paper presents a new and simple method to find indicator species and species assemblages characterizing groups of sites. The novelty of our approach lies in the way we combine a species relative abundance with its relative frequency of occurrence in the various groups of sites. This index is maximum when all individuals of a species are found in a single group of sites and when the species occurs in all sites of that group; it is a symmetric indicator. The statistical significance of the species indicator values is evaluated using a randomization procedure. Contrary to TWINSPAN, our indicator index for a given species is independent of the other species relative abundances, and there is no need to use pseudospecies. The new method identifies indicator species for typologies of species releves obtained by any hierarchical or nonhierarchical classification procedure; its use is independent of the classification method. Because indicator species give ecological meaning to groups of sites, this method provides criteria to compare typologies, to identify where to stop dividing clusters into subsets, and to point out the main levels in a hierarchical classification of sites. Species can be grouped on the basis of their indicator values for each clustering level, the heterogeneous nature of species assemblages observed in any one site being well preserved. Such assemblages are usually a mixture of eurytopic (higher level) and stenotopic species (characteristic of lower level clusters). The species assemblage approach demonstrates the importance of the 'sampled patch size,' i.e., the diversity of sampled ecological combinations, when we compare the frequencies of core and Satellite species. A new way to present species-site tables, accounting for the hierarchical relationships among species, is proposed. A large data set of carabid beetle distributions in open habitats of Belgium is used as a case study to illustrate the new method. [less ▲]

Soil oribatid mite communities from three vegetation types (forest, woodland and savanna) are described in Luiswishi (high Shaba, Zaïre) and 151 species were recorded. Oribatid communities are organized along a successional gradient which parallels the regressive sere defined by phytosociologists and going from the dense forest ("muhulu"), the local climax, to the savanna, passing through the woodland ("miombo"). Within this gradient, oribatid communities may vary depending on the habitat (presence of grass, high termitaria). The impact of seasons (dry vs. rainy season) is weak in the forest but drastic in savanna. The various soil oribatid communities are related to man's activities since the regressive sere results from repeated burnings and associated agricultural practices. [less ▲]
