In this paper a typical situation arising in the assembly of printed circuit boards is investigated. The planning problem we face is how to assemble boards of different types using a single line of placement machines. From a practical viewpoint, the multiplicity of board types adds significantly to the complexity of the problem, which is already very hard to solve in the case of a single board type. In addition, relatively few studies deal with the multiple board type case. We propose a solution procedure based on a hierarchical decomposition of the planning problem. An important subproblem in this decomposition is the so-called feeder rack assignment problem. By taking into account as much as possible the individual board type characteristics (as well as the machine characteristics) we heuristically solve this problem. The remaining subproblems are solved using constructive heuristics and local search methods. The solution procedure is tested on real-life instances. It turns out that, in terms of the makespan, we can substantially improve the current solutions. [less ▲]

Aim : A clinical, randomized, parallel, multicenter study was undertaken to compare the efficacy and Ihe tolerability of two known steroid creams, betamethasone 17-valerate and clobetasol propionate, alone or left under a hydrocolloid dressing (Contreei'* Derma Cover), in the treatment of chronic plaques of psoriasis. Methods : A total of 70 patients with symmetrical localized psoriasis were divided randomly into two groups for the study. Each patient applied ihe corticosteroid preparation under Contreet° Derma Cover once a week on one plaque and the same topical corticosteroid alone h.i.d on the other plaque; the treatment lasted 3 weeks for betamethasone 17-valerate, and 2 weeks for clobetasol propionate. Results : The heahng rate reached 79% with the Contreet" combined treatment versus 15% (P < 0,0001) with the standard treatment for betamethasone 17-valeratc (group I) and Sb% versus 14*70 (P < 0. 0001) for clobetasol propionate (group It). The mean difference in healing rate was 65% {95% confidence interval (C.I), 46-84%) and 69% (95% CL, 50-87%) in groups I and II, respectively. Conclusion : The use of the new generation of hydrocolloid dressings in combination with steroid preparations can be considered as another therapeutic option for the treatment of chronic localized psoriatic lesions. Furthermore, with this method the amount of the topical corticosteroid used can be reduced. [less ▲]

Antitumor and radiosensitizing effects of (E).2'-deoxy.2'-(fluromethyl ene) cytidine (FMdC), a novel inhibitor of ribonucleotide reductase, were evaluated on nude mice bearing s.c. xenografts and liver metastases of a human colon carcinoma. FMdC given once daily or twice weekly has a dose-dependent antitumor effect. The maximum tolerated dose In the mice was reached with 10 mgi'kg applied daily over 12 days. Twice weekly administration of FMdC reduced its toxicity but lowered the antitumor effect. Treatment of preestablished liver micrometastases obtained via intrasplenic injection of tumor cells, with 5 or 10 mgfkg FMdC, signifi candy prolonged the survival of the mice as compared to controls (P < 0.025 and P < 0.001, respectively). Ten mg/kg resulted in longer survival than S mg/kg FMdC (P < 0.05). Radiotherapy alone of s.c. xenografts (10 fractions over 12 days) yielded the radiation dose required to produce local tumor control in 50% of the treated mice (TCD@O)of 43.0 Gy. When combined with FMdC, TCDsawas reduced to 22.5 and 19.0 Gy at doses of 5 and 10 mg/kg given i.p. 1 h before each irradiation, respec tively. The corresponding enhancement ratios were 1.91 and 2.43, respec lively. FMdC produced moderate and reversible myelosuppression. When 5 mg/kg FMdC was combined with irradiation, there was no increased skin or hematological toxicity as compared to radiotherapy or FMdC alone. At the 10 mg/kg level, however, lower leukocyte counts were observed. These results show that FMdC appears to be a potent anticancer drug and radiosensitizer [less ▲]

This book offers a collection of contributions discussing the main provisions of the Vienna Sales Conventions. Starting with a chapter on the scope of application of the Convention, the book includes among others chapters on the rights and duties of seller and buyer, the remedies available to parties and the various provisions relating to the termination of the sales contract. The emphasis is on the application of the Convention in Belgium : reference is made to provisions of the Uniforme Sales Laws and to its application by Belgian courts. The contributions also include reference to the (then existing) case law of other Contracting countries. [less ▲]

Motivated by a fundamental clustering problem arising in several areas (production management, marketing, numerical analysis, etc.), we investigate the facial structure of the polytope whose extreme points are all 0–1 block diagonal matrices. For this polytope, general properties of facet-defining inequalities are investigated and specific families of facets are identified. Various techniques for lifting or combining facet-defining inequalities into new ones are also presented. Throughout the paper, a block diagonal matrix is regarded as the adjacency matrix of a disjoint union of complete bipartite graphs. The presentation and the derivation of the results heavily rely on this graph-theoretic interpretation. [less ▲]

Prediction studies, conformational analyses and membrane-topology mapping lead to the conclusion that the penicillin sensory transducer, BlaR, involved in the inducibility of beta-lactamase synthesis in Bacillus licheniformis, is embedded in the plasma membrane bilayer via four transmembrane segments TM1-TM4 that forma four-alpha-helix bundle. The extracellular 262-amino-acid-residue polypeptide, S340-R601, that is fused at the carboxy end of TM4, possesses the amino acid sequence signature of a penicilloyl serine transferase. It probably functions as penicillin sensor. As an independent entity, this polypeptide behaves as a high-affinity penicillin-binding protein. As a component of the full-size BlaR, it adopts a different conformation presumably because of interactions with the extracellular 63-amino-acid-residue P53-S115 loop that connects TM2 and TM3. Reception of the penicillin-induced signal requires a precise conformation of the sensor but it does not involve penicilloylation of the serine residue S402 of motif STYK. Signal transmission through the plasma membrane by the four-alpha-helix bundle may proceed in a way comparable to that of the aspartate receptor, Tar. Signal emission in the cytosol by the intracellular 189-amino-acid-residue Y134-K322 loop that connects TM3 and TM4, may proceed via the activation of a putative metallopeptidase. [less ▲]
