Ausloos, J. Phys. A 29, 309 (1996)] considers the growth of a cluster in a medium containing a fraction x of mobile "particles" that are pushed by a propagation front. This model is exactly solved here on various chains and trees that contain loops following an "evolution matrix" method. The exact value for the percolation threshold x(c) and the critical exponents are calculated for static and mobile particles, respectively. Surprisingly, the mobile character of the particles affects the values of the critical exponents on chains but not on trees. Thus there is a nonuniversal behavior for dynamic epidemics even on d=1 lattices. [more ▼] The molecular basis of the biorhythms are evoked in relation to cerebral EEG rhythms and paroxysms. Basic oscillatory phenomena have been well shown and modeled in systems such as the glycolytic pathway, the oscillations of cAMP in amoebas and rhythms of the intracellular cycline during mitosis. In excitable cells the intracellular calcium and cAMP oscillations exhibit a signalling system with many advantages. Thus the question arises: to what extent can the EEG paroxysms observed in epileptic syndrome be due to disturbances in such basic molecular pathways that underlie intracellular molecular oscillations? The usefulness of the absence-rat-model and the implication the T type Ca(2+)-channel of the thalamic nuclei in the pathophysiology of this epileptic syndrome are discussed. Following renal transplantation ... [more ▼] X-linked Alport syndrome (AS) is a heritable disorder which is associated with mutations in the type IV collagen alpha 5 (IV) chain gene (COL4A5) located on chromosome X. Following renal transplantation, an average of 6% of male AS patients develop anti-GBM nephritis. We studied the specificity of the antibodies against type IV collagen in the serum of a patient with COL4A5 partial deletion. The specificity of these alloantibodies was determined against collagenase-digested GBM, as well as against recombinant non-collagenous (NC1) domains of the type IV collagen alpha 1(IV)-alpha 6(IV) chains expressed in escherichia coli. Immunoblotting and ELISA demonstrated that these antibodies bound specifically to the NC1 domain of alpha 5(IV) collagen. There was no binding to the NC1 domain of the other chains, including the Goodpasture antigen. Competitive ELISA confirmed the results obtained by ELISA and immunoblotting. This patient developed alloantibodies directed against antigens present in the grafted kidney, but absent from his Alport kidney. The pathogenesis of post-transplantation glomerulonephritis in the Alport patient studied is thus similar to that of Goodpasture syndrome, with the exception that the pathogenic antibodies are targeted to another alpha chain of type IV collagen. [more ▼] Cells immunoreactive for the enzyme aromatase were localized in the forebrain of male zebra finches with the use of an immunocytochemistry procedure. Two polyclonal antibodies, one directed against human placental aromatase and the other directed against quail recombinant aromatase, revealed a heterogeneous distribution of the enzyme in the telencephalon, diencephalon, and mesencephalon. Staining was enhanced in some birds by the administration of the nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor, R76713 racemic Vorozole) prior to the perfusion of the birds as previously described in Japanese quail. Large numbers of cells immunoreactive for aromatase were found in nuclei in the preoptic region and in the tuberal hypothalamus. A nucleus was identified in the preoptic region based on the high density of aromatase immunoreactive cells within its boundaries that appears to be homologous to the preoptic medial nucleus (POM) described previously in Japanese quail. In several birds alternate sections were stained for immunoreactive vasotocin, a marker of the paraventricular nucleus (PVN). This information facilitated the clear separation of the POM in zebra finches from nuclei that are adjacent to the POM in the preoptic area-hypothalamus, such as the PVN and the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus. Positively staining cells were also detected widely throughout the telencephalon. Cells were discerned in the medial parts of the ventral hyperstriatum and neostriatum near the lateral ventricle and in dorsal and medial parts of the hippocampus. They were most abundant in the caudal neostriatum where they clustered in the dorsomedial neostriatum, and as a band of cells coursing along the dorsal edge of the lamina archistriatalis dorsalis. They were also present in high numbers in the ventrolateral aspect of the neostriatum and in the nucleus taeniae. None of the telencephalic vocal control nuclei had appreciable numbers of cells immunoreactive for aromatase within their boundaries, with the possible exception of a group of cells that may correspond to the medial part of the magnocellular nucleus of the neostriatum. The distribution of immunoreactive aromatase cells in the zebra finch brain is in excellent agreement with the distribution of cells expressing the mRNA for aromatase recently described in the finch telencephalon. This widespread telencephalic distribution of cells immunoreactive for aromatase has not been described in non-songbird species such as the Japanese quail, the ring dove, and the domestic fowl.
