The flash photolysis technique was employed to study the properties of eosin triplet state in aqueous micellar solutions. Increasing the concentration of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide from 10−6 M to the CMC leads to a dramatic decrease of triplet absorbance and to the appearance of a very fast decay process of triplet state resulting from the formation of dye-rich induced micelles. From the CMC to 10−2 M, the absorbance and the lifetime of triplet state increase progressively. [less ▲]

Photometric uvby observations of Epsilon CrA obtained with the 1-m telescope at ESO during 1985 are compiled in tables along with published photometry from the period 1960-1984 and analyzed comprehensively. The results are presented in O-C diagrams and discussed, and a relative increase of 0.00001 in the period of the object is detected. It is pointed out that this change may have been gradual (over a 5-10-yr period) or abrupt (at about HJD 2,440,000), but that the period appears to have become stable again in the most recent observations. For patients who require treatment over a period of some years, intranasal administration of synthetic salmon calcitonin (SSCT) obviates the discomfort associated with administration by injection. Moreover, this mode of administration is not associated with the side effects normally encountered when calcitonin is injected intramuscularly or subcutaneously. The aim of this study was to assess, in normal subjects, the biological activity of nasal SSCT by comparing the fluctuations of parameters reflecting calcium-phosphorus metabolism after nasal instillation, injection of SSCT and injection of placebo, respectively. In nine healthy subjects, this instillation of 200 IU of SSCT into the nasal cavity caused a fall in serum calcium, a fall in serum phosphorus and a transient rise in parathyroid hormone levels similar to that observed after the intramuscular (i.m.) injection of 80 IU of SSCT. SSCT whether administered by the nasal route or by injection, does not inhibit endogenous calcitonin secretion. There were no changes in serum beta-endorphin, magnesium or erythrocyte magnesium levels after administration of calcitonin by the intranasal route or by injection. [less ▲]
