The crystallographic structure of the penicillin-sensitive D-alanyl carboxypeptidase-transpeptidase from Streptomyces R61 has been solved to 2.8-A resolution. The 38,000-dalton serine peptidase has two regions of secondary structure, an alpha/beta cluster, and a region which contains five helical segments. The beta sheet is composed of five beta strands. The tertiary structure has no homology with the classic serine proteases or with the zinc carboxypeptidases. The binding at a common site of three types of beta-lactam (a penicillin, a cephalosporin, a monocyclic beta-lactam) and a desazacyclobutanone has been observed in Fourier difference maps. The binding site sequence is Val-Gly-Ser-Val-Thr-Lys. The beta-lactam ring lies near the enzyme's catalytic serine at position 37, and the C3 substituent of a cephalosporin falls near lysine 40. High resolution spectrophotometric data were obtained for the stellar objects HD 19445 and HD 140283. The spectra gathered were well-matched by model stellar atmospheres for the continuous flux and Fe I excitation equilibrium. HD 19445 was identified as a dwarf star and HD 140283 as a subgiant. Abundance analyses indicated an Fe abundance lower than previously estimated, oxygen overabundant relative to C and Fe, Mg, Si and Ca overabundant relative to Fe, and deficiencies of Al and Mn. Sr was overabundant relative to Ba. The abundance discrepancies are in disagreement with the standard nucleosynthesis model. Further such spectroscopic data are needed to develop accurate galactic chemical evolution models. [less ▲]

The authors present the lightcurves in the Strömgren system of 56 CP stars. The observational data have been fitted by a sine wave and its first harmonic. The least-square parameters are tabulated and it is shown that such a fit describes very well the CP variations in most cases, the only exceptions being due to observational uncertainties. [less ▲]

The eclipsing variable star HR 2800 (HD 57593) is characterized on the basis of uvby photoelectric photometry and 20-A/mm coude spectrograph plates obtained at ESO and at SAOO during the period 1975-1983. The data are presented graphically and used to estimate the ephemeris parameters of the eclipses, which have a depth in V of 0.25 mag, as time of minimum = JD 2,444,629.7797 + or - 0.010 and period = 24.6033 + or - 0.0003 days. HR 2800 is classified as a bright B-star Algol-type variable. [less ▲]
