Ultrasounds are produced and heared by a great variety of animals. Every zoological group considered has its own system of emission/audition. Ultrasounds appear to be used only in order to exchange some information with other members of a group or to echolocate i.e. to detect possible preys or obstacles with a sonar like system. The best know echolocating mammals are cetaceans and bats. Bats produce two kinds of ultrasonic signals: constant frequency emissions and frequency modulated pulses. Pure tones allow quick detection and identification of the prey, whereas echoes of FM pulses carry valuable informations on the quality of sound reflecting surfaces. Despite these highly sophisticated detection systems, the preys, mainly moths, can sometimes escape their predator. Some of the adopt an irregular flight, others are able deter the bats or to jam their echolocation clicks. [less ▲]

Coverage of a dorsal defect on the hand of a child with exposed extensor tendons was provided by a denervated first dorsal interosseous muscle and splitthickness skin grafting. We do not recommend routine use of the first dorsal interosseous muscle as a flap; however, its use in cases in which the muscle has been denervated would seem justified. [less ▲]

Newborn rat cerebellum microexplants have been used as a model to study neuronal migration. Laminin in a substrate-bound form modifies extensively the migratory behavior of the neurones, an effect which is blocked if antilaminin antibodies are present during the assay. 35S methionine incorporation followed by SDS-PAGE electrophoresis, fluorography and immunoprecipitation with antilaminin antibodies allowed to demonstrate that laminin is synthesized and secreted by cultured newborn rat cerebellum as well as by cultured newborn rat cerebral cortex astrocytes. The beta-lactamase of Enterobacter cloacae P99 consists of one polypeptide chain of Mr 39000 devoid of disulphide bridges and free thiol groups. It contains an unusually high proportion of tyrosine and tryptophan. The N-terminal sequence exhibits overlaps with the tryptic peptide obtained after labelling the active site with 6 beta-iodopenicillanate. The active-site serine residue is at position 64. The homology with the chromosomal beta-lactamase of Escherichia coli K 12 (ampC gene) is lower within the 25 residues of the N-terminal portion than around the active-site serine residue. The P99 beta-lactamase is inactivated by 6 beta-bromo- and 6 beta-iodo-penicillanate, with a second-order rate constant of 110-140M-1 X s-1 at 30 degrees C and pH 7.0, a value that is much lower than that observed with class-A beta-lactamases.
