[more ▼] A model of the interaction between incident electron precipitation and H2 atmospheres is described. The local degraded primary and secondary electron energy distributions are calculated by using the continuous slowing down approximation. The altitude distribution of the ionization rate and various H and EUV H2 emissions are calculated for four different incident electron spectra. A total EUV H2 emission efficiency of 10.6 kR/incident erg/sq cm per sec is obtained for a pure H2 atmosphere. Comparison with the Voyager Jupiter observations indicates that an incident energy flux of about 8 ergs/sq cm per sec was present at the time of the encounter if the emission is located in an H2-dominated region. The local thermospheric heating rate was about 4 ergs/sq cm per sec for Jupiter and of the order of 0.1 erg/sq cm per sec for Saturn. A globally averaged atomic hydrogen production rate of about 1 x 10 to the 10th atoms/sq cm per sec is induced by the Jovian auroral electron precipitation, largely exceeding the solar EUV dissociation rate. [more ▼] The cellular effects of three alkaloids isolated from STRYCHNOS USAMBARENSIS (melinonine F, strychnofoline, 18-19-dihydro-usambarine) are analysed by cytological methods in experimental animal tumours cultivated IN VITRO (B 16 mouse melanoma cells, mouse Ehrlich tumour cells ELT, HW 165 rat hepatoma). Under some experimental conditions, a certain degree of antimitotic activity is demonstrated. [more ▼] The first research undertaken for the Commission of the European Communities has led to a first manual version of a design methodology, mainly orientated to the conception of low-cost houses, integrating the fundamental thermal concepts into the design process without any use of sophisticated technology. The work to be carried out in the present project will concern: - the verification of the efficiency of the design methodology by its practical application on the design of a few low-energy houses and the building of these houses ; - an experimental study, which will check the first evaluations given by the application of the design methodology ; - the development of the lacunas so discovered in the design methodology ; - the achievement of a conversational computerized version of the design methodology ; - in the monitoring of the houses, the analysis of the internal partitioning and of the usable fraction of the building thermal inertia. The final product of this research project will contain a revised version of the manual design guide and its computerized version ; the energy savings actually obtained will be described, with a complete analysis of the resulting global economical cost ; the perspectives of energy savings in the low-cost houses sector will be assumed. [more ▼] The intrinsic reactivity of delta 2- and delta 3-deacetoxy-7-phenylacetamidocephalosporanates, penicillanate, unsubstituted, 2-methyl- and 2-phenyl-penems and other beta-lactam antibiotics has been expressed in terms of the second-order rate constant (M-1.s-1(OH-)) for the hydrolysis of the beta-lactam amide bond by OH- at 37 degrees C. The values thus obtained have been compared with the second-order rate constants (M-1.s-1(enzyme) for the opening of the same beta-lactam amide bond during interaction with the beta-lactamases of Streptomyces albus G and Actinomadura R39 and the D-alanyl-D-alanine-cleaving serine peptidases of Streptomyces R61 and Actinomadura R39. Depending on the cases, the accelerating effect due to enzyme action and expressed by the ratio M-1.s-1(enzyme)/M-1.s-1(OH) varies from less than 2 to more than 1 x 10(6). The primary parameter that governs enzyme action is the goodness of fit of the beta-lactam molecule to the enzyme cavity rather than its intrinsic reactivity. With the D-alanyl-D-alanine-cleaving serine peptidases, the three penems studied form intermediate complexes characterized by very short half lives of 14-100 s, values significantly lower than those exhibited by most beta-lactam compounds.
