La technique d'analyse des surfaces par la spectrométrie des électrons Auger est décrite. Après un rappel historique de la découverte du mécanisme de réémission électronique par Auger, en 1925, les aspects physiques fondamentaux de la méthode sont présentés. La spectrométrie des électrons Auger fournit des spectres caractéristiques de transitions entre les niveaux discrets des atomes qui constituent une véritable signature atomique de la matière. Le volume détecté par l'analyse des électrons Auger excités par un faisceau d'électrons primaires est déterminé essentiellement par la profondeur d'éjection des électrons s'échappant de l'échantillon, dépendant elle-même de l'énergie de ces électrons. On peut ainsi montrer que les électrons Auger sont caractéristiques d'une profondeur de quelques Angströms seulement. Leur analyse permet donc de caractériser qualitativement et quantitativement la surface de matériaux solides. [less ▲]

The aim of the work is twofold : to give the main intrinsic characterictics of self-service supermarkets and hypermarkets in the region of Liège and to examine their spatial insertion in the heart of this built-up area. Based on very precise surveys, it also tries to improve the methods used to study supermarkets and hypermarkets by putting forward new criteria and by perfecting certain types of analysis. Not only does it emphasize the big quantitative and qualitative features of these sales points but it also stresses the problem of localisation which is dealt with from three different points of view : structuration of the agglomeration, areas of insertion and accessibility by road and by bus. The escape probability method developed by Sobolev (1947) is applied to the case of a two-level atom. The numerical applications are based on a previous work concerning a general theory of spectral-line formation in outward-accelerating and outward-decelerating stellar envelopes. Only the radiative exchanges occurring between the atomic levels are considered, and the statistical-equilibrium equations are solved rigorously in the cases of a transparent medium at rest, an outward-accelerating envelope, and an outward-decelerating envelope. The population of the atomic levels are compared for different physical conditions in each case. It is shown numerically that in the case of an outward-decelerating envelope the contribution of distant atoms to the mean intensity of line radiation appreciably enhances the degree of excitation throughout the envelope.
