Using histochemical methods the activity of acetycholinesterase, acid phosphatase and various dehydrogenases was investigated in the developing rat spinal cord. At the ninth embryonic day (E9) only the activity of the lactate dehydrogenase slow-moving isoenzymes was prominent in spinal neurons. Between E13 and E15 an increase was observed in the activity of most of the dehydrogenases and of acid phosphatase in motoneurons and posterior root ganglion cells. Between E15 and E17 acetylcholinesterase activity increased markedly. On E17 and E20, this enzyme was also detectable in anterior and posterior roots and in neurons of the intermediate grey matter. On E20, although all grey matter neurons were cytologically fully differentiated, their enzymatic content was found to be still incomplete. The prominent acid phosphatase reaction within laminae I and II, which is characteristic of the adult rat, was absent in the fetal spinal cord. These findings indicate that the spinal cord metabolism is predominantly anaerobic during the first two-thirds of gestation. The histoenzymological maturation of grey-matter neurons is delayed in comparison to their cytological differentiation. Furthermore, the ontogenesis of motoneuronal acetylcholinesterase activity correlates well with the development of motor activities in the rat fetus. [less ▲]

An infant with multiple congenital anomalies was found at autopsy to have a porencencephalic defect on the ventral surface of the left frontal lobe. The intracranial defect was seen in association with an anomalous configuration of the circle of Willis. The zone of tissue destruction corresponded to the vascular territory of the anterior choroidal and lenticulo-striate branches of the proximal middle cerebral arteries, which were absent on the left. The developmental anomaly of the circle of Willis may have predisposed to tissue destruction by compromising cerebral perfusion at midgestation, a stage of rapid brain growth. [less ▲]

Since sub-endocardial ischemia is the consequence of a discrepancy between the blood demand and supply of oxygen at this level, the study of the myocardial performance by the measurement of the endocardial viability ratio (E.V.R.) is both useful and possible during anesthesia. E.V.R. is the ratio between the oxygen supply and demand of the myocardium. It is equal to the diastolic pressure time index (D.P.T.I.) over the tension time index (T.T.I.). Measurements are made at different times, by means of the arterial pressure and the left atrial pressure, as well as with the Datascope-E.V.R. Computer. During gradual morphine administration (0.5-1-1.5 mg/kg) and if no major surgical stress occurs, E.V.R. remains excellent and stable (1.46 - 1.48 - 1.43). It deteriorates more or less (1.29 - 1.09) during tachycardia or hypertension. Within the hour following the end of extracorporeal circulation, E.V.R. significantly improves (1.04 - 1.06 - 1.09 - 1.23). Although E.V.R. measurement is easy during cardiac surgery, it is impossible to carry out in case of arrhythmia. While morphine anesthesia induces no variation in E.V.R., tachycardia or hypertension require the addition of therapeutic drug. Within one hour following the end of extra-corporeal circulation, E.V.R. measurement shows improved endocardial viability, although the hemodynamic parameters undergo no significant change. [less ▲]

A study was undertaken at Liege amongst a group of former prisoners of war hospitalised for chronic somatic problems. In addition to a sociological history and standardised clinical discussion, it involved the application of tests and the measurement of electrodermal activity. These are the relationships and correlations between psychometric data and the results of electrodermography which are reported by C. Mormont, above all with the aim of posing the general question as to whether the link between E.D.A. on the one hand and secondly emotivity and intellectual efficiency is simple. The discussion, chaired by Prof. Heimann, after a number of questions concerning details of the study, centres around two main questions : firstly technical problems, centres are felt to be of fundamental importance to certain participants, and secondly the electrodermogram which cannot apparently be considered as an "affectogram".
