Until now a national forest inventory design has never been considered in Belgium. Nevertheless a so called general census is realized every ten years since 1950 (the tenth since 1846). It chiefly concerns various statistics of belgian forests (covering about 600.000 hectares) dealing with structure, owners, species, ages, volumes and financial values at administrative and forest levels. From a quantitative point of view (volume estimation) these statistics are not very reliable. In our opinion it would be important to complete and to standardize qualitative information by means of objective elements. These would be based upon samplings designs so that all people interested in forest production and its utilization can have a more precise idea of forest areas themselves, state of growing stock (types of volume included) and current rate of growth. According to the characteristics (dimension and structure) of many existing forests, such investigations could be made in two stages : - use of aerial photos to identify representative forest zones useful to be studied; - realization of a set of stratified systematic samplings (intensity : 2-3 ‰; area concerned: about 200.000 hectares) with combination of temporary and permanent circular plots (4-10 ares). A triaxial-ellipsoid model is used to simulate the smooth and nearly symmetric light curves that are usually characteristic of asteroids which exhibit large brightness variations. The mathematical model is developed and applied to two problems involving an asteroid moving with its rotational axis either perpendicular to or lying within the plane containing the sun and earth. The numerical results obtained are compared with Dunlap's (1971) simulations of asteroid brightness variations, and it is argued that typical asteroid phase coefficients cannot be interpreted unambiguously. The results are shown to favor the Hapke-Irvine relation for describing the scattering properties of a dark asteroid surface. [less ▲]

The stability of D-5,5-dimethyl-delta2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid has been studied under various conditions. In 10 mM cacodylate, pH 6.5, and at 55 degrees C, D-5,5-dimethyl-delta2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid (at concentrations lower than 1 mM) is hydrolyzed into N-formyl-D-penicillamine with a half-life of 3 to 4 min. On this basis, it is very unlikely that D-5,5-dimethyl-delta2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid could be one of the end products resulting from the cleavage of benzylpenicillin by the DD-carboxypeptidase of Bacillus stearothermophilus (as reported by Hammarstrom and Strominger (1976) J. Biol. Chem. 251, 7947--7949). In 3 mM phosphate, pH 7.5, and at 37 degrees C, D-5,5-dimethyl-delta2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid (at concentrations lower than 1 mM) has a half-life of 45 min. On the basis of kinetic experiments carried out under these conditions with phenoxymethylpenicillin and the DD-carboxypeptidase-transpeptidase of Streptomyces R61, it is concluded that the primary product which arises from the thiazolidine moiety of the antibiotic molecule and gives rise to N-formyl-D-penicillamine, has a half-life of 10 min, a value which is not compatible with the hypothesis that D-5,5-dimethyl-delta2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid would be an intermediate involved in the fragmentation pathway. Binding of penicillin to the DD-carboxypeptidase of the unstable spheroplast L-form of Proteus mirabilis results in the rapid formation of a modified enzyme-inhibitor complex which in turn undergoes rapid decay into reactivated enzyme and an antibiotically inactive penicillin degradation product. Major antibiotic metabolites recovered from such interactions were benzylpenicilloic acid and phenoxymethylpenicilloic acid from benzylpenicillin and phenoxymethylpenicillin, respectively, suggesting a second enzymic function of the DD-carboxypeptidase as a penicillinase of low efficiency. Statistical analyses made with the help of a linear regression program show that the enzyme interacts with the substrate UDP-N-acetylmuramoyl-L-alanyl-D-gamma-glutamyl-(L)-meso-2,6-diaminopimelyl -(L)-D-alanyl-D-alanine and either benzympenicillin or carbenicillin in a non-competitive manner. The results are presented of photographic observations of asteroid positions made in August 1976 at La Silla, Chile. The quality of the sky characteristics made it possible to record objects with the magnitude 17. Measurements of all plates were conducted with the aid of the Ascorecord measuring machine of the Royal Belgian Observatory. The reduction method employed is based on the use of five reference stars. The equatorial planet coordinates can be easily obtained from the employed parameters with the aid of the formulas considered by Smart (1944). In the evaluation procedures use was made of the SAO catalog which had been recorded on magnetic tape by the Strasbourg Observatory. Three new asteroids were discovered. The obtained data are presented in two tables. [less ▲]

This thesis is devoted to the finite element analysis of hydro-elastic vibrations arising in launchers. It sets a general formulation generalizing Tong's one by a logical step in a lagrangian point of view. A specialized solution algorithm is presented. As launchers are axisymmetric structures, a general theory of axisymmetric structures with cosinusoidal modes is presented, including shells, volumes, and incompressible structures. The problem of setting the ccorrest limiting conditions on the axis is treated. Special pressure terms are also treated. [less ▲]
