The patch test is shown to be contained in the variational formulations of the finite element methods at the assembling level, all of which require the vanishing of the virtual work of interface connexion loads. By a systematic introduction of stress generating functions, attention is drawn to the fact that any given finite element model can be assembled in two different ways: either by identiification of a set of boundary displacements (leading to the direct stiffness method), or by identification of a set of local stress function values (leading to the dual direct flexibility method). Looking at any conjugate couple (generalized displacement - generalized surface traction) at an interface, one is strongly transmitted, the other weakly. Discretization of the zero virtual work condition at an interface of plate bending models, by means of Legendre polynomials expansions, allows q systematic construction of so-called "non-conforming" elements that pass the patch test. They are in fact identified with weakly conforming, but strongly diffusive , htbrids, and the lowest degree element (quadratic) is in fact the Morley constant-moment element. Examples are given for higher displacement fields. The case of plate stretching elements can be handles by duality, the difficulties being here associated with the requirements for diffusivity. Non diffusive elements that pass the zero interface virtual worktest can be constructed systematically and are identifiable with weakly diffusive, but strongly conforming, hybrids, of the type first proposed by T.H.H. Pian. [less ▲]

The pharmacological properties of ten tertiary, hybrid and quaternary alkaloids isolated from the barks of Strychnos usambarensis roots have been investigated. Usambarensine, a tertiary bis-indole alkaloid, inhibits the muscarinic effects of acetylcholine. Four ammonium quaternary products (C-dihydrotoxiferine, afrocurarine ( a new compound), C-curarine and C-calebassine are potent curarizing agents. [less ▲]

Forest management problems require a great number of varied informations. The use of computers involves a rigorous organization, which has led the author to study the constitution of a data bank. The data bank described in this paper is made up of four main permanent and dynamic files separately built but strongly connected, comprising : general statistic of the studied forest, qualitative and quantitative stands descriptions and ecological informations. The basic descriptive unit is the plot, or any other fixed forest unit which allows for data and the results of treatments to be updated. In addition to the four main files, three other files are dealing with the study of various simulation problems, automatic mapping by the computer and use of informations provided by forest yield tables. The kinetic energy distribution of the O+ ions formed by dissociative ionization of O2 has been carefully examined in the range of 0.0 to 1.3 eV. In the peak at 600 meV fine structure is observed and interpreted by predissociation. The high energy side of the peak has been ascribed to the predissociation of the 2Deltag, B2Sigma-/g and the C4Sigma-/u states of O2+. The low energy side of the peak is presumably due to the predissociation of the b4Sigma-/g or the 2Phiu state of O2+ or to autoionizing predissociation. [less ▲]
