The N-acyl substituent of muramic acid in the cell walls of some species of Actinomycetales and of the related family of Corynebacteriaceae has been studied. The N-glycolyl derivative, recently identified in Mycobacterium smegmatis, has been found in the three other species of Mycobacterium studied: M. kansasii, M. tuberculosis BCG, and M. phlei. The classical N-acetyl derivative has been found in Streptomyces albus and Corynebacterium fermentans. [less ▲]

In a restraining device, providing a constant localization and easy placement of stimulating electrodes, rats were contioned to a push a front panel in order to reduce the intensity of a shock which otherwise increased regularly every 10 sec. Rapid contioning was obtained from all subjects. They showed a very stable behavior, with negligible inter- or intra-individual variability throughout very long experimental sessions. The operant nature of the response was demonstrated further in extinction, where no shock was delivered, and in situations where the animal could not change the predetermined intensity of the shock. The interpretaion of the obtained threshold was discussed with reference to previous studies on titration schedule. It was suggested that, with the parameters used, the shock intensity at which it was maintained by the rats' behavior, had the value of a warming signal, and that, in this particular case, the titration schedule mainly discriminative avoidance behavior rather than escape behavior. The main concern of this study is the artist’s vision of society; its major theme is the relation between the individual and society resulting from the impact of social and political upheavals on individual life. By criticism of society I mean the novelist’s awareness of the social reality and of the individual’s response to it; the writers I deal with all proved alive to the changes that were taking place in English society between the two World Wars. Though the social attitudes of the inter-war years as well as the writers’ response to them were shaped by lasting and complex influences, such as trends in philosophy and science, the two Wars stand out as determining factors in the development of the novel: the consequences of the First were explored by most writers in the Twenties, whereas in the following decade the novelists felt compelled to voice the anxiety aroused by the threat of another conflict and to warn against its possible effects. After the First World War many writers felt keenly the social disruption: the old standards, which were thought to have made this suicidal War possible, were distrusted; the code of behaviour and the moral values of the older generation were openly criticized for having led to bankruptcy. Disparagement of authority increased the individual’s sense of isolation, his insecurity, his disgust or fear. Even the search for pleasure so widely satirized in the Twenties was the expression of a cynicism born of despair. The ensuing disengagement of the individual from his environment became a major theme in the novel: his isolation was at once a cause for resentment and the source of his fierce individualism. The peptidoglycan physically protects the membrane against deleterious influences. The membrane is involved in peptidoglycan synthesis and in other wall regulation mechanisms. The possible physiological function of a soluble carboxy-peptidase active on acyl-D-alanyl-D-R-OH substrates and its relation to the membrane-bound transpeptidase involved in peptidoglycan synthesis are discussed. The geological map of the cavern of Remouchamps was surveyed at a scale of I : 500. The main structural features are two anticlines, with faulted hinges, separated by a syncline. The observed faults are reversed, except for the most northerly - the Faille Cathédrale Nord - which is normal. The strike of the principal faults is about N.- 70-80°E. No faults with this strike have been recognized on the surface at Remouchamps. [less ▲]

The appearance of negative ions by dissociative electron attachment has been studied by electron impact on CH4, C2H2, C2H4 and C2H3X (X=F, Cl) using a sector field mass spectrometer. An interpretation has been attempted for the measured appearance potentials. The electronaffinity of C2 and C2H is found to be (3.3+/-0.3) eV and (2.3+/-0.2) eV respectively. Some evidence is brought for the existence of excited electronic states in polyatomic negative ions. [less ▲]

The preceding paper deals with research on the "readability" of radio and TV news. Since 1960, Professor De Landsheere and his team of the Liège University Department for Educational Research carry on research on readability formulae. The Flesch readability test has been adapted. Owing to specific differences between the English and the French language, G. De Landsheere had to change several rules adopted by R. Flesch. For French, the Flesch-De Landsheere readability scores have a range of about -30- + 90 (+90 is the easiest text ever found so far). To help interpreting results, the scores of French schoolbooks, illustrated papers, comics, adult papers, novels, school TV, etc. are mentioned. >The purpose of this project was to evaluate the level of intelligibility (readability and vocabulary) of radio and TV news (verbal part). Three information categories have been tested : foreign affairs, national politics and general information in French. Two hundred samples of about 100 words have been drawn from Belgian radio and TV news bulletins, between February 26 and March 11, 1968 ; 84 further 100 word samples have been drawn from Europe I (France) and Radio Luxembourg news bulletins. The vovabulary has been studied with reference to the 1063 words list of Gougenheim's Franàais fondamental (spoken language) and the 3000 words list of Verlée's Basic Vocabulary (written language). For the latter, G. De Landsheere has first weighted the words according to the frequency indexes. Later on, it has been demonstrated that there is a positive correlation of at least 85 between the percentage of outsiders from the Gougenheim list and the weighted Verlée vocabulary. [less ▲]
