Fast rotation in massive stars is predicted to induce mixing in their interior, but a population of fast-rotating stars with normal nitrogen abundances at their surface has recently been revealed (Hunter et al. 2009; Brott et al. 2011, but see Maeder et al. 2014). However, as the binary fraction of these stars is unknown, no definitive statements about the ability of single-star evolutionary models including rotation to reproduce these observations can be made. Our work combines for the first time a detailed surface abundance analysis with a radial-velocity monitoring for a sample of bright, fast-rotating Galactic OB stars to put strong constraints on stellar evolutionary and interior models. We consider a special class of axial multi-dimensional assignment problems called multi- dimensional vector assignment (MVA) problems. An instance of the MVA problem is defined by m disjoint sets, each of which contains the same number n of p-dimensional vectors with nonnegative integral components, and a cost function defined on vectors. The cost of an m-tuple of vectors is defined as the cost of their component-wise maximum. The problem is now to partition the m sets of vectors into n m-tuples so that no two vectors from the same set are in the same m-tuple and so that the sum of the costs of the m-tuples is minimized. The main motivation comes from a yield optimization problem in semi-conductor manufacturing. We consider a particular class of polynomial-time heuristics for MVA, namely the sequential heuristics, and we study their approximation ratio. In particular, we show that when the cost function is monotone and subadditive, sequential heuristics have a finite approximation ratio for every fixed m. Moreover, we establish smaller approximation ratios when the cost function is submodular and, for a specific sequential heuristic, when the cost function is additive. We provide examples to illustrate the tightness of our analysis. Furthermore, we show that the MVA problem is APX-hard even for the case m = 3 and for binary input vectors. Finally, we show that the problem can be solved in polynomial time in the special case of binary vectors with fixed dimension p. [less ▲]

The bryozoan Electra posidoniae Gautier is found solely on the leaves of the Neptune grass Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile, dominating the leaf epifauna of this seagrass. Epiphytes of marine angiosperms (or seagrasses) often play an important role in ecosystem functioning, for example as food web suppliers. As dysfunction of epiphytic compartment is often implied in human-induced seagrass decline, it is important to understand the dynamics and life traits of this community in pristine areas. This study involved the monthly assessment of colonization dynamics, biomass seasonality and diet composition through stable isotopes measurements of E. posidoniae at a depth of 10 m in the Revellata Bay (Corsica, Mediterranean Sea). Ancestrulae (i.e. colony founders) appeared towards the end of winter and were very selective in their settlement position along the P. oceanica leaves. A maximum of 100,000 colonies per square meter was recorded. E. posidoniae colonies dominated the epiphytic community biomass in early spring, and were over-covered by epiphytic algae in June. Food shortage could be also involved in this decrease. Although stable isotope ratios of C, N and S showed that this suspension feeder mainly relies on the water column productivity for its food, other food sources such as re-suspended epiphytic diatoms could be important in late spring (i.e. after the phytoplanktonic bloom). Additionally, a contribution of seagrass phytodetritus to the diet of this species cannot be excluded. The species was almost absent in winter, raising the question of its recruitment in spring. This study confirms the quantitative importance of this species in the seagrass meadow and explores its role in the relationship between the water column and this seagrass ecosystem. [less ▲]

Trying to describe polytheism is a difficult enterprise because the whole system can be seen as a complex structure, each element of which (a deity with its proper name) is both itself a complex set of prerogatives, and at the same time, must be considered in concert with the other elements. After a brief historiographical overview, this paper focuses on the first aspect by using the notion of ‘network’ as a metaphor to refer to the complexity of the ancient Greek gods. It provides two case studies, of the Moirai and the goddess Hera. The paper concludes that polytheism can be described if one conceptualises the complexity of the gods—their unity and diversity—together at every level (Panhellenic and local, cult and myths, and so on). Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a non-invasive medical imaging modality that provides information about physiological processes. Due to its ability to measure the brain metabolism, it is widely used to assist the diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD) of Parkinsonism. In order to avoid the subjectivity inherent to the visual exploration of the images, several computer systems to analyze PET data were developed during the last years. However, dealing with the huge amount of information provided by PET imaging is still a challenge. In this work we present a novel methodology to analyze PET data that improves the automatic differentiation between controls and AD patients. First the images are divided into small regions or parcels, defined either anatomically, geometrically or randomly. Secondly, the accuray of each single region is estimated using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier and a cross-validation approach. Finally, all the regions are assessed together using multiple kernel SVM with a kernel per region. The classifier is built so that the most discriminative regions have more weight in the final decision. This method was evaluated using a PET dataset that contained images from healthy controls and AD patients. The classification results obtained with the proposed approach outperformed two recently reported computer systems based on Principal Component Analysis and Independent Component Analysis. [less ▲]

Although mobility management by employers is an increasingly common practice, literature is scarce on the real impact of the applied measures. In this perspective, the objective of this paper is to assess the impact on car use of the measures adopted by employers located in Wallonia. In order to achieve this objective, the article develops simulations that put forward the impact of the measures based on their interrelations with other modal choice factors. Our assessment leads to the conclusion that measures promoting public transport and car-pooling can reduce solo car driving between 7,2 % and 8,4 %. In contrast to our assumption, measures promoting public transport are less effective in central areas than in urban outskirts. Regarding measures promoting the use of bicycle, the findings suggest that the modal shift occurs from other modes rather than from car use. [less ▲]

In last years, many research efforts in neurosciences have focused in multivariate approaches based on machine learning as an al- ternative to the use of Statistical Parametric Mapping and the univariate analyses that it provides. However, this relatively new field still lacks of a software framework that completely meets the needs of the scientific community. In this work we present a toolbox designed to facilitate the access to the recent advances in neuroimaging data analysis based on multivariate approaches. The toolbox, written on Matlab, is freely avail- able and implements a Graphical User Interface that allows managing neuroimaging data in an easy way. [less ▲]

Thermal comfort study provides crucial information about thermal performance of naturally ventilated buildings. Humphreys and Auliciems comfort model uses indoor and outdoor temperatures to predict comfort temperatures. It is found that the comfort temperatures obtained by using these methods do not take into account the occupant behavioral adaptability to a particular climatic zone. This demands development of new set of comfort models based on local environmental parameters, socio-cultural setup and behavioral action. Analysis shows that four major variables like indoor and outdoor temperature, relative humidity and clothing pattern plays an important role in defining comfort and greatly influence the occupant’s perception and acceptance on thermal comfort. In this study, comfort models are developed based on these variables. The computed neutral temperatures based on the models are compared with the comfort temperatures obtained through comfort survey. The models are developed using the measured data of January and July months and validated with the measured data of April and October months. This study also concludes that it is not possible to obtain a generalized thermal comfort model for all climatic zone because adaptation process, expectation and perception of people are region specific and governed by local socio-cultural requirement.
