[more ▼] Context. The sample of hot Jupiters that have been studied in great detail is still growing. In particular, when the planet transits its host star, it is possible to measure the planetary radius and the planet mass (with radial velocity data). For the study of planetary atmospheres, it is essential to obtain transit and occultation measurements at multiple wavelengths. Aims: We aim to characterize the transiting hot Jupiter WASP-19b by deriving accurate and precise planetary parameters from a dedicated observing campaign of transits and occultations. Methods: We have obtained a total of 14 transit lightcurves in the r'-Gunn, I-Cousins, z'-Gunn, and I + z' filters and 10 occultation lightcurves in z'-Gunn using EulerCam on the Euler-Swiss telescope and TRAPPIST. We also obtained one lightcurve through the narrow-band NB1190 filter of HAWK-I on the VLT measuring an occultation at 1.19 μm. We performed a global MCMC analysis of all new data, together with some archive data in order to refine the planetary parameters and to measure the occultation depths in z'-band and at 1.19 μm. Results: We measure a planetary radius of Rp = 1.376 ± 0.046 RJ, a planetary mass of Mp = 1.165 ± 0.068 MJ, and find a very low eccentricity of e = 0.0077-0.0032+0.0068, compatible with a circular orbit. We have detected the z'-band occultation at 3σ significance and measure it to be δFocc,z' = 352 ± 116 ppm, more than a factor of 2 smaller than previously published. The occultation at 1.19 μm is only marginally constrained at δFocc,NB1190 = 1711-726+745 ppm. Conclusions: We show that the detection of occultations in the visible range is within reach, even for 1 m class telescopes if a considerable number of individual events are observed. Our results suggest an oxygen-dominated atmosphere of WASP-19b, making the planet an interesting test case for oxygen-rich planets without temperature inversion. [more ▼] The members of the scarce category of Of^+ supergiants present properties that are intermediate between regular O-stars and Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars. Significant similarities between these transitional stars and WN-type objects are now clearly established, at least in the visible and near-infrared domains, pointing to common stellar wind properties. In this study, we report on the first dedicated X-ray observations of HD16691 (O4If^+) and HD14947 (O5f^+), revealing a soft thermal spectrum in agreement with the expected X-ray emission from a single O-type star. However, the X-ray luminosity of our targets is slightly lower than expected for single O-type stars, suggesting that the particular properties of their stellar wind has also a significant impact on the X-ray emission of these objects on the way to the WN category. We argue that the X-ray under-luminosity of HD16691 and HD14947 may be interpreted as the signature in X-rays of the intermediate stage between O and WR stars, as a consequence of enhanced wind density. [more ▼] The objective of this study was to discriminate by a NIR line scan hyperspectral imaging, taxonomic plant families comprised of different grassland species. Plants were collected from semi-natural meadows of the National Apuseni Park, Apuseni Mountains, Gârda area (Romania) according to botanical families. Chemometric tools such as PLS-DA were used to discriminate distinct grassland species, and assign the different species to botanical families. Species within the Poacea family and Other Botanical Families could be distinguished (R2=0.91 and 0.90, respectively) with greater accuracy than those species in the Fabacea family (R2=0.60). A correct classification rate of 99% was obtained in the assignment of the various species to the proper family. Moreover a complete study based on wavelength selection has been performed in order to identify the chemical compound related to each botanical family and therefore to the possible toxicity of the plant. This work could be considered as a first step for the development of a complete procedure for the detection and quantification of possible toxic species in semi-natural meadows used by grazing animals. [more ▼] We report the discovery by the WASP transit survey of a highly-irradiated, massive (2.242 +/- 0.080 MJup) planet which transits a bright (V = 10.6), evolved F8 star every 2.9 days. The planet, WASP-71b, is larger than Jupiter (1.46 +/- 0.13 RJup), but less dense (0.71 +/- 0.16 {\rho}Jup). We also report spectroscopic observations made during transit with the CORALIE spectrograph, which allow us to make a highly-significant detection of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect. We determine the sky-projected angle between the stellar-spin and planetary-orbit axes to be {\lambda} = 20.1 +/- 9.7 degrees, i.e. the system is 'aligned', according to the widely-used alignment criteria that systems are regarded as misaligned only when {\lambda} is measured to be greater than 10 degrees with 3-{\sigma} confidence. WASP-71, with an effective temperature of 6059 +/- 98 K, therefore fits the previously observed pattern that only stars hotter than 6250 K are host to planets in misaligned orbits. We emphasise, however, that {\lambda} is merely the sky-projected obliquity angle; we are unable to determine whether the stellar-spin and planetary-orbit axes are misaligned along the line-of-sight. With a mass of 1.56 +/- 0.07 Msun, WASP-71 was previously hotter than 6250 K, and therefore might have been significantly misaligned in the past. If so, the planetary orbit has been realigned, presumably through tidal interactions with the cooling star's growing convective zone. [more ▼] In order to analyze and try to mitigate the potential consequences of a hazard threatening a complex socio-technical system, the risk analysis framework is classically used. Many risk analysis models recognize now widely the importance of integrating social aspects into the analysis. Another way to deal with potential consequences of hazards is to analyze the vulnerability of the system considered. This paradigm overcomes the shortcomings of risk analysis in situations when the knowledge about the probabilities and the outcomes is incomplete or insufficient. Studies in the literature considering natural hazards show that socio-economic factors are integrated more often and in a natural way in vulnerability analysis models. Nevertheless, it seems that such considerations are missing into models aiming at evaluating the vulnerability to an industrial hazard, especially at a very local level where the technical aspects seem to be predominant. What can we learn from the analysis of the models addressing vulnerability to natural hazards in terms of the integration of social factors? To answer this question, we realized a systematic literature review from scientific journal papers on vulnerability analysis published in the last two decades. We synthesize this review and we propose an integrated vulnerability analysis model; in order to test this model we use as a case-study the incident reports collected in a nuclear facility in Belgium. This confrontation allows us to highlight important factors to be taken into account for a vulnerability analysis conducted in such a context. [more ▼] As opposed to fundamental analysis, financial chartism (or technical analysis) is based on the assumption that future movements of a traded asset can be inferred from past regularities. In spite, or maybe by virtue of its lack of scientific grounds, it enjoys an ever-growing popularity among amateur traders, as countless websites provide free, simple and powerful tools for making professional-looking charts and even automate the detection of trends. Though technical analysts account for the validity of chart patterns in terms of market psychology, constructivist explanations also abound among trading communities: it is all as if economic agents reflexively used technical analysis as a means of coordination on the market. Markers like moving averages and trend lines serve as self-referent indicators whose efficacy only gets reinforced as more agents use it as pivotal points. Performativity is the technical analyst’s most natural language: explicit mentions to mechanisms such as the self-fulfilling prophecy or the Keynesian beauty contest are the only justifications s/he needs. Some chartists even claim their discipline does not contradict the efficient-market hypothesis: if prices already reflect all past publicly available information, one may skip the hassle of dissecting balance sheets or mastering pricing models, focusing instead on candlestick or diagram patterns which, by conjecture, contain all the necessary information to explain price movements. Drawing on the comparative analysis of nonprofessional trading blogs, our paper examines how these major epistemic modes of justification of technical analysis have come to support each other, in a context of proliferation of charting tools. It is intended to be used for monitoring deformations as well as flaw detection in aeronautical composites, with a smaller sensitivity to displacement compared to equivalent system using visible lasers.
