Radiative lifetime measurements were performed with time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence techniques for 47 levels of the astrophysically important ion Sm1+ over the energy range 21000-36 000 cm(-1). The new results have been compared with previous measurements but also with theoretical calculations taking configuration interactions and core-polarization effects into account, and a satisfying agreement has been found for many levels of this complex ion. New calculated transition probabilities are deduced from the experimental lifetimes and from the theoretical branching fractions for 162 transitions of astrophysical interest. These results will help astrophysicists in the quantitative investigation of the chemical composition of CP stars. [less ▲]

Antibubbles have been produced and studied with the help of a high-speed camera. An antibubble is defined as a fluid object constituted by a thin air shell surrounding a liquid and surrounded by the same liquid. Images reveal some key physical processes and fluid instabilities which take place when an antibubble forms and dies. The collapsing speed of the air film has been measured. Culik's theory does not apply. A new mechanism has been introduced. [less ▲]

Among possible associations in sea, different Carapidae fish are able to live within various invertebrates such as holothuroids, starfishes and bivalves. In this study, a multidisciplinary approach is realised to understand the biology of the Carapidae fish and to highlight the various factors which make these associations possible. Two research axis were carried out. The first axis attempts to establish Carapidae evolution. These approach was realised by comparisons 1) of the anatomy (muscles, skeleton, ligaments, dentition and otoliths), 2) of the functional morphology (feeding and sonic apparatus), 3) of the larvae development and 4) of the way of life of fish from the genera Pyramodon, Snyderidia, Echiodon, Onuxodon, Carapus and Encheliophis. The Carapidae may be divided in five ecomorphological groups which are placed on an ecological gradient leading to parasitism. The pelagic ancestor group gave rise to a benthic taxon. The latter could be at the origin of two distinct taxa of commensal fish. Within the Carapus clade, a group would have evolved to the parasitic life. The second axis of the study provided elements elucidating various aspects of the Carapini (Carapus and Encheliophis) behaviour. The morphofunctional study of the bucco-pharyngeal apparatus, the stable isotopes of carbon (13C) and nitrogen (15N), the stomach content determinations and the study of otolith increments allow to define clearly the commensal behaviour of Carapus and the parasitic behaviour of Encheliophis. The study of the larval development (axial skeleton and otoliths) reveals that the association between the fish and the host is obligatory, as the fish needs its host to initiate its metamorphosis. The hosts could be used as a bridal room. The capacities to emit sounds were also highlighted and the structures (skeletal, muscular and of the swim bladder) responsible were identified and described. The fish use the sound production at least to communicate inside the host but experimental manipulations also show that the fish are unable to determine if a host is already occupied or not. CO vertical profiles have been retrieved from solar absorption FTIR spectra recorded at the NDSC station of the Jungfraujoch ( 46.5 degreesN, 8degrees E and 3580 ma. s. l.) for the period from January 1997 to May 2001. The characterisation of these profiles has been established by an information content analysis and an estimation of the error budgets. A partial validation of the profiles has been performed through comparisons with correlative measurements. The average volume mixing ratios ( vmr) in the 3 km layer above the station have been compared with coincident surface measurements. The agreement between monthly means from both measurement techniques is very good, with a correlation coefficient of 0.87, and no significant bias observed. The FTIR total columns have also been compared to CO partial columns above 3580 ma. s. l. derived from the MOPITT ( Measurement Of Pollution In The Troposphere) instrument for the period March 2000 to May 2001. Relative to the FTIR columns, the MOPITT partial columns exhibit a positive bias of 8 +/- 8% for daytime and of 4 +/- 7% for nighttime measurements. [less ▲]

This is the first study to report on concentrations of perfluorinated organochemicals (FOCs) in marine mammals stranded along the southern North Sea coast in relation to stable nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios (delta(15)N and delta(13)C). The presence of FOCs in top predators such as marine mammals would indicate a potential biomagnification of these compounds and their widespread occurrence. Liver and kidney tissues of nine marine mammal species have been sampled. Among all the measured FOCs compounds, PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) was predominant in terms of concentration. The highest PFOS concentrations were found in the liver of harbor seal compared to white-beaked dolphin, harbor porpoise, gray seal, sperm whale, white-sided dolphin, striped dolphin, fin whale, and hooded seal. PFOS concentrations differed significantly between sexes and age classes in harbor porpoises. Stable isotope measurements (delta(13)C and delta(15)N) were used in this study to describe the behavior of contaminants in food webs. We found a significant (p < 0.05) linear relationship between PFOS concentrations in livers of harbor porpoises and both Muscle delta(13)C and delta(15)N measurements. Harbor and gray seals and white-beaked dolphin, which displayed the highest trophic position, contained the highest PFOS levels, while offshore feeders such as sperm whales, fin whales, striped dolphin, and white-sided dolphin showed lower PFOS concentrations than inshore species. The electrical resistance decay of a metallic granular packing has been measured as a function of time. This measurement gives information about the size of the conducting cluster formed by the well connected grains. Several regimes have been encountered. Chronologically, the first one concerns the growth of the conducting cluster and is identified to belong to diffusion processes through a stretched exponential behavior. The relaxation time is found to be simply related to the initial injected power. This regime is followed by a reorganization process due to thermal dilatation. For the long-term behavior of the decay, an aging process occurs and enhances the electrical contacts between grains through microsoldering. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics. [less ▲]

DNA ligases are important enzymes required for cellular processes such as DNA replication, recombination, and repair. NAD(+)-dependent DNA ligases are essentially restricted to eubacteria, thus constituting an attractive target in the development of novel antibiotics. Although such a project might involve the systematic testing of a vast number of chemical compounds, it can essentially gain from the preliminary deciphering of the conformational stability and structural perturbations associated with the formation of the catalytically active adenylated enzyme. We have, therefore, investigated the adenylation-induced conformational changes in the mesophilic Escherichia coli and thermophilic Thermus scotoductus NAD(+)-DNA ligases, and the resistance of these enzymes to thermal and chemical (guanidine hydrochloride) denaturation. Our results clearly demonstrate that anchoring of the cofactor induces a conformational rearrangement within the active site of both mesophilic and thermophilic enzymes accompanied by their partial compaction. Furthermore, the adenylation of enzymes increases their resistance to thermal and chemical denaturation, establishing a thermodynamic link between cofactor binding and conformational stability enhancement. Finally, guanidine hydrochloride-induced unfolding of NAD(+)-dependent DNA ligases is shown to be a complex process that involves accumulation of at least two equilibrium intermediates, the molten globule and its precursor. Lyophilisation of Theileria parva sporozoite stabilates used for immunisation of cattle against East Coast fever would greatly improve vaccine storage and delivery. We report three attempts to lyophilise and resuscitate the sporozoites of T parva. Sporozoites survived lyophilisation and were effective for immunisation. Lyophilised stabilate survived for 2 weeks at 5degreesC and for 12 weeks at -20degreesC. Although the viability of the stabilates was severely reduced during lyophilisation, this work suggests that this method has potential and should be considered for other Apicomplexan parasites such as Babesia sp. or Plasmodium sp.
