Urbanization in Belgium is a process of diffusion rather a process of urban concentration, though the country is very densely populated. In this process the state does not look to have a leading role. The paper examines how the housing policy determines this process of urbanization, namely by promoting the ownership and the individual house. The housing policy, initiated in years of deep social crisis, can only be understood as an upper-class response to the riots in 1886 : the housing policy is intended to give and enforce a social definition of working class, with various interpretation granted by the political opposing forces. The “garden-city” model was then promoted because it allowed to make apolitical compromise between these interpretations. But it was an ideological model with only a few realisations. However it allowed the dominant preference for individual housing to become the real model wich was implemented through the numerous measures wich constitutes the housing policy. In the following stages, a lot of measures came to enlarge the benefit of the public aid to other social groups. From this analysis, it becomes clear that one of the social functions of the housing policy is to enforce the different representations of the social structure wich do no longer need a moralizing discourse because of the hidden connections between the space, the social structure and the policy system. We describe a family in which two generations are affected: two brothers and one of their maternal uncles. One of their two half-sisters (same mother) is also suspected of having the same cardiopathy. This observation confirms the autosomal dominant transmission of the disease and shows its variable expressivity in the family under study. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

The exterior calculus package EXCALC2, developed by Schrüfer, is used to implement Siklos' method on a computer. By an appropriate choice of the 1-form basis of spatially homogeneous cosmological models, making use of the time-dependent automorphisms of the Lie algebra, it is possible to obtain a compact form of Einstein's field equations for general models of this type. The explicit expression of the equations, obtained with the help of EXCALC2, is given here for two nondiagonal five-dimensional spatially homogeneous models, namely G[SUB]1[/SUB] and G[SUB]8[/SUB]. These equations constitute an ideal tool for the study of the dynamics of these models: an oscillatory behavior has been found for model G[SUB]1[/SUB], while model G[SUB]8[/SUB] exhibits a monotonous kasnerian mode of approach to the initial singularity. Common pulmonary function tests used in man and domestic mammals were adapted to the goat. Requirements for intrathoracic pressure record and pulmonary function investigation were determined. The elastance of the mid-thoracic portion of the oesophagus was measured in 17 healthy goats. The calculated percentage error in identifying the endoesophageal intrathoracic pressure decreased with somatic growth, and was found to be smaller than 2 per cent for adult goats. The location of the oesophageal balloon catheter used to measure the intrathoracic pressure was standardised. The following regression equation calculated between the length of catheter (Lcat) and the thoracic circumference (TC) was found: Lcat (cm) = 6.19 +/- 0.7163 X TC (cm) (R2 = 0.96). The influence of the dead space of a face mask on respiration pattern and arterial blood gas were studied. There were no significant changes in arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) and carbon dioxide (PaCO2), pHa, breathing frequency and intrathoracic pressures. The influence of head and neck position was investigated. Upper airway resistance (Ruaw), measured with the head in a normal position did not significantly differ from values obtained with the head in a horizontal position. Ruaw measured with the head in a vertical position was considerably increased. Arterial blood gas tension and pulmonary mechanics were measured to assess the reproducibility of pulmonary function measurements. Variability in blood gas tension, tidal volume and minute volume is small. The variability of peak to peak intrathoracic pressure change (max delta Plp), dynamic lung compliance (Cdyn), total pulmonary resistance (RL) and Rt were relatively large. [less ▲]

In the present study, we have established and validated a radioenzyme assay which permits us to quantify progesterone metabolism in the chicken brain. Progesterone metabolism was then studied in five brain areas obtained by microdissection from the telencephalon (part of the lobus paraolfactorius immediately rostral to the preoptic area), the preoptic area, and the hypothalamus. Three metabolites of progesterone were produced in large amounts in these brain regions and were quantified in this study: 5 beta-pregnane-3,20-dione (5 beta-DHP) as well as its metabolite 3 alpha-hydroxy-5 beta-pregnane-20-one (5 beta,3 alpha-ol) and 5 alpha-pregnane-3,20-dione (5 alpha-DHP). The unmetabolized progesterone was also recovered and quantified. The 5 beta-reduction of progesterone (production of 5 beta-DHP and 5 beta,3 alpha-ol) was very active but its 5 alpha-reduction (production of 5 alpha-DHP) was almost absent in the lobus paraolfactorius. An opposite pattern of metabolism was found in the preoptic area and the hypothalamus (higher 5 alpha- but lower 5 beta-reductase activity). The changes in progesterone metabolism in these brain areas were then studied in groups of hens submitted to induced egg laying stop and molting. A significant decrease in progesterone 5 alpha-reduction was found in the median hypothalamus of hens during the period of molt. Simultaneously, the experimental procedures induced significant decreases in the production of 5 beta-DHP by the lobus paraolfactorius, anterior, and medial hypothalamus but induced a significant increase in the production of this metabolite in the preoptic area. These changes are likely to be involved in the control of reproductive functions including sexual behavior and secretion of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone, and a number of possible causal mechanisms are presented. These should now be tested experimentally especially in view of the very limited information which is now available on the biological effects of the metabolites of progesterone. [less ▲]
