[more ▼] Simulations have been run to compare the performance of several period determination algorithms: essentially Fourier's, Lafler-Kinman's and Stellingwerf's methods have been considered, as well as a couple of variants. The application to single-periodic phenomena shows that none of the methods is clearly superior to the others. Fourier's and the non-parametric methods have relatively different scopes and they are, to some extent, complementary. [more ▼] Numerical simulations were used to assess the multinight technique for UV by photometric data reduction. Observation sets were created for 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 nights. The standard values were assumed to be accurate to 0.004 magn. and the error in the measurements was 0.006 magn. A total of 20 standard stars were kept, along with 20 constant stars, giving an average of 16 stars every night. Analysis shows that the multinight procedure leads to a dramatic improvement in the precision of the results. [more ▼] Results of photoelectric observations of the asteroid 201 Penelope carried out at the European Southern Observatory and Perth Observatory during the 1980 opposition of the asteroid between October 6 and November 7 are presented. Observations were made in the standard UBV and Geneva systems at ESO, and in V-prime at Perth. Examination of composite light curves shows the presence of two distinct maxima and two distinct minima, with a total amplitude of the V light curve of 0.52 magnitudes. A mean synodic rotation period of 3 h, 44 min, 51.6 + or - 7.4 sec is derived. Using a mean phase coefficient beta[SUB]V[/SUB] = 0.037 mag/deg, a primary V (1,0) maximum of 8.51 + or - 0.01 magnitudes is obtained. Color indices are measured as B-V = 0.70 + or - 0.01 and U-B = 0.23 + or - 0.02 magnitudes, and previously reported color variations (Surdej and Cramer, 1980) are attributed to a failure in the reduction procedure. [more ▼] The cellular effects of melinonine F, an alkaloid isolated from STRYCHNOS MELINONIANA (South America) and STRYCHNOS USAMBARENSIS (Central Africa), are analysed in cancer or normal cells in culture. A cytotoxic action is noted in both types of cells, at least for relatively high concentrations. These effects are probably due to interaction of the drug with chromatin. Physico-chemical analysis demonstrates partial intercalation of melinonine F on pure DNA IN VITRO. [more ▼] A first research funded by the Commission of the European Communities has led to a manual design methodology, mainly orientated to the conception of low-cost houses, integrating the fundamental thermal concepts into the design process, without any use of sophisticated technology. The present paper concerns a practical application of this design methodology, used for a project of 25 low-energy houses designed, built and to be monitored. From the first design step until the detailed design, the research team has followed the objective to obtain houses having estimated heating energy needs 50 % lower than commonly, without any investment overrun, even on a difficult North sloped site. The design methodology has been an optimization tool of the volume, the plan, the North and South fenestration, the insulating material, etc. The construction elements were usual (for cost reasons), but their installation has been improved in a manner which allows a continuous control during the construction, giving no the guarantee to obtain thermal properties as close as possible to the expected ones. A detailed monitoring will measure the actual heating energy consumption and thus check the first evaluations. [more ▼] To the Editor : Woods et al. provide evidence for a decrease in the rate of sodium-lithium countertransport in red cells after hemodialysis, and suggest that this effect is related to the removal of a plasma factor. They did not observe a difference in ouabain-dependent sodium efflux during hemodialysis, but this conclusion is based on data in only two patients. This latter observation disagrees with previous date, which demonstrated a decrease in the sodium-potassium pump activity in patients with chronic renal failure. We have studied the sodium exchange in red cells of 11 patients receiving hemodialysis. These date suggest that the modifications in the rate of ouabain-sensitive sodium efflux observed after hemodialysis may be related to a volume-dependent plasma factor and not only to a decrease in th concentration of a dialyzable factor; this factor may be similar to the "natriuretic digoxin-like factor" postulated by de Wardener and MacGregor as playing a part in primary hypertension. It is also possible that the effect observed by Woods et al. on sodium-lithium countertransport is linked to improvement of the sodium-pump activity. [more ▼] RNA synthesis is activated in the cells of the plant embryo very soon after the start of seed imbibition. We previously reported that mainly heterogeneous nuclear RNA is synthesized in the radicle of Zea mays embryo during the first hours of germination. The present study was undertaken in order to detect the time of appearance of the newly synthesized messenger RNA in the polysomes of germinating maize axes.Free polysomes were prepared from embryonic axes rehydrated for 2 hours in the presence of radioactively labeled uridine. These polysomes were shown to be labeled and to contain labeled particles sedimenting, after dissociation with EDTA, in the 10S to 40S region of a sucrose gradient. The labeled polysomal RNA migrates heterogeneously in a gel with a mean size corresponding to about 16S, and 60% of these molecules are polyadenylated. The data indicate that the newly synthesized RNA associated with the polysomes after 2 h of germination consists of messenger RNA molecules. Analysis of the polysomes prepared 0.5 and 1 h after the start of imbibition suggests that translation of the newly synthesized messenger RNA probably occurs within the 1st hour of imbibition of the isolated axis, thus well before the completion of the initial water uptake. [more ▼] The aqueous-alcoholic extract of the bark of GUATTERIA GAUMERI (Mexican Annonaceae) is used for the treatment of cholelithiasis and hypercholesterolemia. Therefore it seems very interesting to perform a phytochemical study of this drug in order to know its composition and to determine, if possible, all the active principles. We describe now the isolation of the main alkaloid named guattegaumerine. This new bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid has been assigned structure 1, on the basis of spectroscopic, chemical and chromatographic evidence. [less ▲] Detailed reference viewed: 29 (1 ULg) |
