Images of the nightside of Venus in the (0,1)delta band of nitric oxide have been obtained by the Pioneer Venus orbiter ultraviolet spectrometer (OUVS). The emission, which is produced by radiative association of N and O, shows a bright spot reaching 5 kR and located at 2 a.m. local solar time just south of the equator. The emitting layer is at 111 + or - 7-km altitude. A one dimensional vertical transport model shows that the hemispheric average brightness of 0.8 kR is consistent with the orbiter neutral mass spectrometer (ONMS) measurements of N and O near 167 km, and that the altitude of the emitting layer is consistent with the eddy mixing model proposed to explain the dayside helium profile measured by the bus neutral mass spectrometer. In the model, N reaches a peak of 7 x 10 to the 8th per cu cm at 114 km, and O reaches a peak of 2.6 x 10 to the 11th per cu cm at 106 km. There is a fair degree of consistency between the ONMS, OUVS, and other airglow measurements, except as regards the local time dependence. [less ▲]

It is maintained that the periods announced for 11 Ori and 137 Tau by Winzer (1974) are not the true ones, but related periods. It is emphasized that in order to find the correct period of a star, it is necessary not only to use a good method of period determination (e.g., Renson 1978), but also to have a good series of measurements, especially concerning the time distribution of the measurements. Otherwise, the true period cannot be distinguished from the related ones. [less ▲]

The average nucleon-nucleus potential at low and medium energy is investigated in the framework of a relativistic quantum field model. Using the same input parameters as Brockmann in his recent study of nuclear ground states, we calculate the self-consistent relativistic Hartree potential at positive energy in the case of infinite nuclear matter and of [SUP]16[/SUP]O and [SUP]40[/SUP]Ca. This potential is the sum of a scalar operator and of the fourth component of a vector operator. We construct its Schrödinger-equivalent potential by eliminating the small component of the Dirac spinor. The central part of this Schrödinger-equivalent potential is in fair agreement with empirical values at low and intermediate energy. Particular attention is paid to the intermediate energy domain, in which the calculated potential is repulsive in the nuclear interior and attractive at the nuclear surface. This is in keeping with some empirical evidence and is similar to results found in the framework of the nonrelativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation. The spin-orbit potential of the relativistic Hartree model is also in good agreement with empirical values. A rapid and sensitive procedure for the estimation of beta-lactam antibiotics is described which makes use of the ability of these antibiotics to inactivate the R39 DD-carboxypeptidase. Depending on the values of the kinetic parameters which govern the reaction, the antibiotics fall into two groups. The lower limit for the quantitative estimation of the antibiotics of groups I and II is about 5 and 50 pmol/ml, respectively. The procedure has been adopted to biological fluids such as human sera and cows' milk. [less ▲]

Streptococcus faecalis ATCC 9790 possesses seven membrane-bound penicillin-binding proteins. They have been characterized with respect to their apparent molecular weights, relative abundance, specificity profiles for 15 different beta-lactam antibiotics and stability under various conditions. In water and at 37 degrees C, all the native penicillin-binding proteins have half-lives longer than 20 h except protein 3b (half-life of about 600 min) and protein 4 (half-life of about 175 min). The short-lived 80 000-Mr protein 4 is spontaneously converted into a 73 000-Mr water-soluble, penicillin-binding protein 4. Similarly, the short-lived 82 000-Mr protein 3b seems to be the protein from which the 72 000-Mr water-soluble protein X spontaneously originates during incubation of the membranes. Release of both proteins 4 and X from the membrane is maximal under alkaline conditions; it is not inhibited by various protease inhibitors. After exposure to trypsin, the 43 000-Mr membrane-bound penicillin binding protein 6 (a DD-carboxypeptidase) gives to a 30 000-Mr water-soluble protein 6. Like the parent protein, protein 6 exhibits both DD-carboxypeptidase activity and penicillin-binding ability. With proteins 6 and 6, low dose levels of p-chloromercuribenzoate prevent both enzyme activity and combination with penicillin, thus strongly suggesting that a thiol group is involved in the enzyme active center. We have shown previously [Coyette et al. in Eur. J. Biochem. 88, 297--305 (1978) and 75, 231--239 (1977)] that the DD-carboxypeptidase protein 6 fragments the benzylpenicillin molecule with formation of phenylacetylglycine. Breakdown of the complex formed between [14C]benzylpenicillin and 14 000-Mr membrane-bound protein 1 is also 'enzyme-catalysed'. Most likely, however, the released product is penicilloate. With all the other penicillin-binding proteins whose molecular weights are intermediate between those of proteins 1 and 6, breakdown of the complexes formed with [14C]benzylpenicillin results from proteolysis and is not due to the release of the bound metabolite. None of the penicillin-binding proteins behaves, by itself, as a lethal target for beta-lactam antibiotic action on the living cells. [less ▲]

[less ▲]
