1. The study of the chemical composition of the conchiolin of mother-of-pearl of Nautilus pompilius Lamarck revealed that the insoluble residue in hot alkali, the nacroïn, is a mucoprotein (or glycoprotein). 2. The polysaccharidic fraction composing the prosthetic group of this mucoprotein is made, at least partially, of chitin. Chitin has been identified by means of purified chitinases. 3. In addition to this polyacetylglucosaminic fraction, an important amount of glucosamine has been identified in the nacrïn residue. 4. Prolonged treatment of the nacroïn in hot alkali leads to the progressive destruction of the peptidic chains, while the aminosaccharidic fraction remains unaltered. 5. It thus appears that chitin is the most stable component of the nacroïn, and consequently of the conchiolin of Nautilus mother-of-pearl. [less ▲]

Selective degradation of the teichoic acid and the peptidoglycan polymers of the walls of Staphylococcus aureus (Copenhagen) by several defined techniques shows that 4-O-β-(N-acetyl-D-glucosaminyl) substitution of the D-ribitol units of the teichoic acid moiety is essential to phage fixation and that, in order to be operative, these groups must possess a definite configuration which, in the native walls, is imparted by the binding of the teichoic acid to the supporting peptidoglycan. The pentapeptide monomer Nα-[L-aIanyl-γ-(α-D-glutamyl-glycine)]-L-lysyl-D-alanine and two isomeric peptide dimers have been quantitatively isolated from walls of Micrococcus lysodeikticus. In one of the peptide dimers, referred as to peptide dimer (Ala→Lys), two pentapeptide monomers are linked through Nє-(D-alanyl)-L-lysine linkages. This linkage is hydrolyzed by the Streptomyces ML endopeptidase but not by the Myxobacter AL I protease. In the second peptide dimer, referred as to peptide dimer (Ala→Ala), two pentapeptide monomers are linked through D-alanyl-L-alanine linkages. This linkage is hydrolyzed by the Myxobacter AL I protease but not by the Streptomyces ML endopeptidase. According to the type of enzymatic degradation used, the pentapeptide monomer has been obtained in the free form, or substituted at its N-L-alanine terminus either by a D-lactic acid residue or by an N-acetylmuramic acid residue. Similarly, the peptide dimer (Ala→Ala) has been obtained in the free form or as a lactyl derivative. The peptide dimmer (Ala→Lys) has only been obtained in the free form. A comprehensive structure for a major part of the wall peptidoglycan is proposed. This structure takes into account the yields with which the peptide fragments are produced by the various enzymatic degradations. It provides explanation for the existence of a large number of peptide unsubstituted N-acetylmuramic acid residues in the glycan moiety. The structural peculiarity of the peptide moiety in M. lysodeikticus walls is the occurrence of large oligopeptides in which several pentapeptide monomers are linked through the aforementioned D-alanyl-L-alanine linkages. The isolation of the N-acetylmuramyl pentapeptide monomer involves, in one of the steps of the wall degradation, the use of a Streptomyces exo-N-acetylhexosaminidase active on both β-1,4-N-acetylglucosaminyl-N-acetylrnuramic acid and β-1,4-N-acetylmuramyl-N-acetylglucosamine disaccharides. This is the first known enzyme acting as an exo-β-N-acelylmuramidase. [less ▲]

A conforming displacement model for plate bending was presented earlier. It is of intyerest to have also an equilibrium moàdel available in order to generate both upper and lower bounds to plate deflections. The theory of the triangular equilibriium model, which is presented here, takes advantage of oblique coordinates. Il allows to cover transvers loading modes. Because the numerical investigations required adaptibility of the model to a stiffness computer-program, only the elaboration of the stiffness matrix was aimed at. The element can nevertheless be recognised as the Southwell analogue of the plane stress model with quadratic displacement field. As such it can be handled efficiently by a force program. Numerical results show the monotonic convergence of deflections from above for the equilibrium model and from below for the conforming model. The convergence rate, in terms of generalized coordinates, is compâred with that of other plate bending elements. [less ▲]
