The paper deals with the seismic design of lock gates. When such structures are submitted to an earthquake, the water contained in the chamber is responsible for an additional hydrodynamic pressure acting on the gate. This one is the sum of three different parts, respectively called the convective, rigid and flexible contributions. The two first ones have already been extensively studied in the literature, but the flexible part is more difficult to assess as it is largely influenced by the coupling occurring between the fluid and the gate. To overcome this difficulty, it is of course possible to use finite elements software, but doing so is not always convenient. This is why some research have been undertaken to provide a rapid way for approximating the flexible pressure on lock gates. This is achieved by applying the analytical approach that is shortly presented in this paper. As a matter of validation, the results obtained through this simplified procedure are compared to numerical solutions. The agreement between both of them is found to be satisfactory. [less ▲]

Recent progress in computer science and stringent requirements of the design of “greener” buildings put forwards the research and applications of simulation-based optimization methods in the building sector. This paper provides an overview on this subject, aiming at clarifying recent advances and outlining potential challenges and obstacles in building design optimization. Key discussions are focused on handling discontinuous multi-modal building optimization problems, the performance and selection of optimization algorithms, multi-objective optimization, the application of surrogate models, optimization under uncertainty and the propagation of optimization techniques into real-world design challenges. This paper also gives bibliographic information on the issues of simulation programs, optimization tools, efficiency of optimization methods, and trends in optimization studies. The review indicates that future researches should be oriented towards improving the efficiency of search techniques and approximation methods (surrogate models) for large-scale building optimization problems; and reducing time and effort for such activities. Further effort is also required to quantify the robustness in optimal solutions so as to improve building performance stability. [less ▲]

Transportation of oil requires attention for a variety of reasons, the most important being the external costs caused by adverse events. These adverse events affect not only the environment costs but also the societal costs. In this paper, a bi-objective optimization model for a bimodal network of oil transportation is presented. The paper discusses a mathematical model that takes into account two main decision criteria, namely cost and safety. A linear programming model is presented, in which the focus is laid on the different elements that affect the performance of the bi-modal transportation chain of oil. The disturbing elements that are considered include technical failures, road conditions and vandalism acts. Thus, in this study, it is investigated how the bimodal network must be designed to avoid adverse effects caused by these disturbing elements. The goal of the approach is to maximize safety and minimize costs. Data from a real life example (i.e. the Tunisian national oil company) will be used to calibrate the model. [less ▲]

In this paper we describe the development of a tool that allows planners to efficiently and effectively plan space within valuable areas of a shipyard. Traditionally, space is considered as resource; however, it is difficult to accurately account for and plan its consumption with the current planning software tools available. The spatial scheduling tool described in this paper can be used by planners to manually or automatically reserve space within the shipyard for construction of large blocks over the entire ship erection period. The software is coupled with a heuristic optimization solver which is inspired by an algorithm used for "3D bin-packing problems". The result is the ability to efficiently generate and compare multiple space allocation alternatives in a reduced time with the ultimate goal of maintaining the critical ship erection schedule. Better solution than manual or semi-automatic allocation of blocks can be obtained through the optimization module. [less ▲]

A significant issue associated Flood Defence Systems (FDS) is the difficulty of predicting how these structures will behave when inevitably they have been loaded beyond their designed capacity by a flood. The flood can cause these structures to fail catastrophically with loss of life and substantial damage to property. For a limited incremental investment, by including resilient features shown in this document, the FDS can dramatically lessen the chances for loss of life and property damage. While not a building code, the following provides guidance on how to improve the resilience of FDS so they will not fail catastrophically when overloaded beyond their designed capacity. Of all “lessons learnt” most important is to explicitly incorporate the consequences of failure and the possibility of being wrong in one's assumptions into the design process. Building in the flood plain will always have risk; the public should not become over confident just because a FDS is place. While it is recognized that an Integrated Water Basin perspective would include retention zones, restricted developments in flood plains, land use planning, awareness raising, flood resistant construction, drainage and water storage improvement, effective evacuation planning and other measures. This paper provides a new contribution to the simplified analytical treatment of collisions between two ships. It is directly connected to the well-known super-elements method, which is a simplified procedure allowing for a quick estimation of the damages caused to both the striking and struck vessels during such events. In this article, a new analytical formulation is presented for estimating the impact resistance provided by inclined ship side panels. Two different scenarios are treated. We first deal with the case of an impact between the oblique plate and the stem of the striking ship, and then we consider the situation where the inclined panel is impacted by the bulb. For these two scenarios, an analytical formulation relating the force and the penetration is provided and these developments are validated by comparing them to the results of finite elements simulations. Finally, the new inclined plate super-element is integrated in a simplified model of a frigate collided by another ship, and the resistance given by the superelements method is then compared to the one obtained by a numerical simulation of this collision. One of the most relevant problems in ship construction and maintenance nowadays is corrosion in ballast tanks of modern merchant vessels. On the one hand, there is a general consensus that the economic lifespan of such a vessel depends, to a large degree, upon the corrosion state of its ballast tanks, while on the other hand these ballast tanks, located between the outer hull and the cargo tanks, makes routine inspection and maintenance a difficult task. Today, ship's ballast tanks are usually constructed in steel and protected with an epoxy coating backed up by sacrificial zinc anodes. Such a construction has been applied without significant alterations for many years. The objective of this economic study is to compare this construction method with some potential alternatives. The considered alternatives are: (1) an increase in structural scantlings, eliminating the necessity to replace corroded at a cost of real cargo carrying capacity of the ship, (2) application of the novel and more durable TSCF25 coating (3), the use of corrosion resistant steel in ship construction and (4) a standard PSPC15 coating combined with lifetime lasting aluminum sacrificial anodes. A cost model was used to evaluate these alternative options together with sensitivity analysis. It is concluded that the durable coating and the use of lifetime lasting aluminum anodes are bound to improve the actual basic tank concept. Corrosion resistant steel becomes attractive when the steel price becomes competitive. [less ▲]

Ship behaviour in current is one of the classical problems in ship manoeuvrability. However, it is not yet fully investigated. The study is motivated by an assessment study on the ship navigation near by a river lock where relatively strong current exists. It is demonstrated how a ship behaves in the current and relatively large drift angle may happen, if the current is comparative to ship speed. In this situation, the hydrodynamic forces and moment acting on a ship is not any more at the range of lift force/moment, and therefore normal mathematical model cannot be applied. Similar situation may occur in case of rapid river stream condition, when a ship losts its power in current. At East Japan Great Earthquake happened in 2011, many ships without their power were drifting in tsunami. It is urgent matter to investigate on the ship behaviour in such situation. [less ▲]

In order to traditionally investigate the strength of marine structures, the structure is subjected to a maximum static load. However, the marine structures are usually suffering environmental forces varying with time. Wave forces are the most important time dependent loading that causes fatigue in structural elements and joints. In this paper different methods base on S-N curve and linear elastic failure mechanics are presented. The governing equations and theories that are used in each method are expressed and the application of each method will be discussed. The two main methods of deterministic analyses are: stressbased approach (S-N curve approach) and linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) approaches. These approaches are applicable to different analyzing strategies, ie the first approach is used for cases in which general form of fatigue is dominant, but the latter involves the calculations of reliability as functions of crack geometry and its boundary conditions. The SPD12C jacket platform is also modeled as a case study and the results of fatigue reliability analysis are presented. In this paper a comprehensive method is presented to accurately predict the reliability of offshore platforms. This method is based on S-N curve and the results are compared with the fatigue life of joints. Due to nonlinear interaction of soil and piles and the other affecting parameters such as flexibility of joints, non Gaussian procedure of loading, and nonlinearity of reaction force, the precise analyzing of stress levels will be impossible and a complex numerical analysis could only give limited information about the statistical properties of stress. In order to perform the fatigue analysis and predicting the cycles of stress SACS was used which is known as a powerful software in designing and analyzing offshore structures. In this paper the whole structure was modeled subjected to different forces such as wave and sea currents. The effects of parameters such as marine growth and interaction of soil and piles are also included. The latter is shown to have a significant effect on determination of fatigue life of the platform.
