Using data from a clinical psychoanalytic study of lesbian couples undertaking Artificial Insemination by Donor (AID), the conference explores how female same sex parenting is related to the notion of the third and to the concept of bisexuality by focusing on two specific themes: the position attributed to the donor, who is unknown to the lesbian parents, as well as the process of evolution and attribution of the place of each mother in the lesbian couple. Our aim is to highlight the complexity of the issue of the third in same-sex parenting by analysing fantasised constructions surrounding the image of the anonymous donor, the impact of the medical act of insemination on the women’s psychic economy and the search for other promising bases for triangulation. We would also like to demonstrate the complexity of the issue of bisexuality: although the project of having a child mobilizes a wide range of identifications for both parental imagos, the whole procedure leading to AID shakes up omnipotent sexual fantasies, mobilizes the fantasy of the heterosexual primal scene and makes necessary further elaboration of the feminine side of bisexuality in the context of gender differences. In this presentation we will be looking at the impact that the use of ART (Artificial Reproductive Techniques) can have on the psyche of women who use the latter techniques because they consider themselves infertile either for biologogical and psychological reasons, or for social reasons especially due to their homosexual orientation. More specifically, we will be analysing the experience of women who successfully become mothers thanks to these new medical techniques and the intervention of third parties (donors and doctors) by looking both at the internal contradictions and psychological conflicts and at the psychological readjustments which seem to facilitate the development of bisexuality and of acceptance of the passivity/receptivity brought on by pregnancy. Chair: François Ladame (Swiss Soc) Presentations: Anders Carlberg (Swedish Assoc) / Sara Flanders (British Soc) / Petra Heymanns (German Assoc) / Despina Naziri (Belgian Soc) / Denny Panitz (Hellenic Soc) The EPF ad-hoc group on homosexuality (Anders Carlberg (Swedish Assoc.), Sara Flanders (British Soc.), Petra Heymanns (German Assoc.), François Ladame (Swiss Soc.), Despina Naziri (Belgian Soc.), and Denny Panitz (Hellenic Soc.)) will present the result of their thorough exploration of what Freud did say and didn’t say about homosexuality. To get there, we first did a chronological – and hopefully comprehensive – review of Freud’s writings on the issue. On a second step, we gathered the quotations according to a number of themes: bisexuality, narcissism, development, aggression and conflict, identification and Oedipus, and perversion/inversion. For the panel, the presentation on Freud’s thinking on homosexuality shall be organised around four “dimensions”: bisexuality, object choice, normality/pathology, and the quantitative factor, with a few “variables” impacting in various ways on each of them (narcissism, free aggressiveness, the socio-cultural context, and the historical meaning of perversion). Due consideration will also be given to the general theme of the Conference “too much – not enough”. As our results are questioning and challenging, enough time shall be kept for the discussion with the floor. [less ▲]
