In Belgium, like in many European countries, the existing buildings represent the main part of the building stock. These buildings are relatively old, and most of the dwellings are not at all or not well thermally insulated; their airtightness is weak and their heating installations are old. We can find there real potential improvement and high possibilities of renovation. The owner, the contractor and the architect are confronted with many renovation options, and choosing the best intervention scenarios is never easy. It’s in this context that the software REFLEX (for Rénovation EFficace d’un Logement EXistant, in English: efficient renovation of an existing dwelling) has been developed. [less ▲]

It is a question of varying various technical combinations (thermo isolation, heating system, renewable energy…) equipping this dwelling in order to obtain a panel of realistic solutions to study under energy” and “economic” angle the “. The analysis of these projects must make it possible to release a maximum level of consumption in primary energy per m ² and per annum, as well as a maximum level of CO2 emission, both realistic as well from the environmental point of view as economic. In France, just like in much of European countries, the park of old buildings available, potentially improvable and prone to restoration is rather important. The energy stakes of planet and the considerable share of the consumption of energy required by the requirements of comfort of the habitat must question the projects promoter and the owners when they approach the restoration of existing buildings. The objective of this project is to develop methods and tools of decision-making aid making it possible a person receiving benefits in energy restoration to determine the best possible scenarios of restoration, i.e. those answering as well as possible waitings of the various actors concerned. This project relates to the individual residential buildings. By energy restoration of a building, one understands the whole of the actions carried out on the frame (insulation, air tightness, etc) and the systems energy (heating, medical warm water, ventilation, etc), aiming at improving his energy performance. The energy assessment of a building takes again all the contributions and the losses of heat to which it is subjected. [less ▲]

For a few years, the concerns of the scientific world as for the climatic balance of the Earth have found echo in the civil society and the political world. The population itself starts to become aware of the situation. But it is not the only stake with which we are confronted. The security of supply, in particular, must be anticipated as of today: the consumption of energy increases continuously (it should double from here 2030), whereas reserves - out of coal, oil, natural gas and uranium - become exhausted ineluctably. Vis-a-vis these real challenges, the control of the request constitutes however also a paramount element: to take again a sentence become famous, best energy remains that which one does not consume! In this last field, the energy performance of the buildings is a factor impossible to circumvent. The more so as the European directive of December 16th, 2002 on the energy performance of the buildings (which must be transposed for January 2006) will involve a small revolution in the sector of construction and, in the long term, in the restoration of the buildings. Even if this directive invites us to reason in terms of total performance, fascinating in consideration the whole of the energy characteristics of the building (envelope, equipment of heating and water provision heat, installations of air-conditioning, ventilation, site and orientation of the buildings, solar systems passive and solar protection, natural ventilation, interior climatic quality,…), the envelope of the building remains certainly the first element to be considered. The Walloon regulation has forced for several years the new buildings to respect a level of total thermo isolation minimum for the envelope. It goes without saying that the tendency in the future, in particular have regard to the objectives laid down at the European level, will be to reinforce the current requirements on the matter. This new work which comes to enrich the collection by “Handy guides for the Architects” while exploring, under the angle of energy, the methodology of design of the frontages of a building, fact continuation more particularly with the guides devoted to the hollow walls and the frontages with framework wood. Energy is only one of the many parameters with which an architect must juggle and it is perhaps not your priority today. However, I am persuaded that our practices should be changed on the matter and that the architect is “angular stone” of the challenges which the control constitutes of energy in the building. This one is economic imperative, social and environmental. [less ▲]

The needs for a building in energy of heating depend on the degree on thermo isolation on its envelope, of its air tightness, the needs for ventilation and its opening to the solar contributions, all parameters which the architect must control to optimize his project. This assessment can be visualized graphically on an abacus, and that simultaneously with the risk of overheating in summer. Paper thus locates the stakes continued by the step of the passive house, in general: to minimize the losses by the envelope, to manage the needs for ventilation and to maximize the solar contributions do not prevent from avoiding the overheating of summer. Passive house JOHANNS built in Kettenis (Eupen) by the architect Leo MICHAËLIS is then presented: project, building site and heat balance. [less ▲]

The Walloon region proposes to the architects and to contractors construction, to fall under a voluntary request for energy efficiency. The objective is to promote the realization of new housings whose energy performance exceeds the lawful requirements currently into force. The conceived residences is carried out within this framework and respecting the criteria of the Charter “Constuire with energy” will receive a certificate. This step, initiated by the Walloon Minister for Energy, falls under perpective transposition of the European directive on the energy performance of the buildings, approved at the end of 2002.
