The Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) is a small semi-aquatic mammal endemic to the Pyrenean Mountains and the northern half of the Iberian Peninsula where it lives in mountain streams of cold and well-oxygenated flowing waters (Nores et al. 2007). This species is currently considered as vulnerable in the IUCN Red List (Fernandes et al. 2008) and has been suffering from habitat loss and fragmentation for decades, inevitably impacting its distribution. The ecology and biology of this species are poorly known, notably because of its elusive behavior and its primarily nocturnal activity (Stone 1987, Bertrand 1994). Its distribution area is even not definitively established. Furthermore, a recent genetic study, based on mitochondrial and intronic sequences (Igea et al. 2013), showed that the genetic variability of the Pyrenean desman is very low in the Pyrenees. In this study we investigated the potential existence of a genetic structure and gene flow at a smaller scale using 24 polymorphic microsatellites loci. As the Pyrenean desman is a very elusive species, we completed our sample collection of tissues with faeces samples coming from the French distribution area of this species. Doing so, we successfully identify 70 individuals out of 355 faeces samples. Bayesian analyses revealed a cryptic genetic structure in our data set. Three clusters were evidenced (one western, one central and one eastern) and gene flow appears to be limited between these clusters (min. Fst value of 0.2). [less ▲]

The Pyrenean desman is a vulnerable mammal species endemic to Pyrenees and the northern Iberian Peninsula. The presence of this elusive species can be most easily detected by sampling its faeces. However, these faecal samples can be confused with those of other vertebrate species living in the same habitats. This study provides two easy and reliable methods for the identification of the Pyrenean desman faeces based on genetic analyses. The first one consists of a nested PCR and sequencing of a mitochondrial cytochrome b fragment, and the second one is an enzymatic digestion with endonucleases Alu I and Sau 3AI. The restriction patterns given by the two enzymes were found suitable for the successful discrimination of the Pyrenean desman from the other species based on species-specific sequence variations. The Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) is probably one of the most threatened European mammal species. This small insectivorous and semi-aquatic species is endemic to the Pyrenean Mountains and of the north of the Iberic Peninsula. Many biologic aspects of this species are currently suffering from a major lack of information, particularly those concerning its genetics. Therefore the implementation of conservative efforts for the Pyrenean Desman remains extremely difficult. In order to improve the knowledge of this vulnerable species and notably, to better understand its distribution area, the first aim of our research was to develop non invasive genetic identification methods based on faeces. The second aim was the development of several polymorphic microsatellites markers in order to have a first look at the genetic structure of the Pyrenean Desman in its French distribution area. The identification methods were developed on the basis of the sequencing of a small mitochondrial DNA (cyt b) fragment as well as a RFLP method. These approaches led to the identification of the Pyrenean desman and to the differentiation of the latter from two other species living in the same type of habitat, the white-throated dipper (Cinclus cinclus) and the water shrew (Neomys fodiens). More than fifteen polymorphic microsatellites markers could be found for the Pyrenean Desman and their genotyping revealed a low number of alleles per locus (two to five). The results of this preliminary work tend to show a low genetic diversity for the Pyrenean Desman but this result needs to be confirmed in the future with a more extended and complete study. Synthesis of Bi2-xPbxSr2Ca2Cu3O10-y (x = 0 and x = 0.3) has been performed using the glass recrystallization route technique. After splat quenching, the samples were annealed at 820, 850 or 870-degrees-C for 96 or 144 h (with one intermediary grinding). High-resolution polarization micrographs and electrical (and magnetic susceptibility) measurements have been taken. Various growth mechanisms can thus be checked, and the physical properties are studied in relation to the microstructure. It is found that the 2223 phase does not crystallize directly from the amorphous one but results from a dissolution-reprecipitation process. The stability of the 2212 phase is emphasized. The 2201 phase precipitates at high temperature and rapidly reacts with the melt to form the 2223 phase. The kinetics of the lead-substituted sample seems to be controlled by the Ca2PbO4 phase. which acts as a flux. [less ▲]

We report precise measurements of the electrical resistivity in three different Bi(Pb) based granular ceramics superconductors. We show that a single critical exponent (5/6) describes the superconductivity fluctuations. Such a critical exponent indicates a fractal behavior of the superconducting path. Our results thus indicate a strict two dimensional fluctuation percolation set (below the superconductivity onset temperature 195 K down to T(c)), and provide some proof for Tarascon et al. "shell conductivity path" hypothesis. We estimate the shell thickness to be of the order of 10 angstrom. [less ▲]

We have examined the deviation from linearity of the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity of a YBaCuO ceramics. We have observed at high temperature a crossover behavior toward a logarithmic temperature dependence at lower temperature. It seems relevant to attribute the origin of such a term to a pair breaking mechanism contribution, thus to give a lower bound to the existence of superconductivity fluctuations onset temperature. Our findings also implies that carriers are bosons above T(c). [less ▲]
