[less ▲]

In the dermatopathology field, some simple available laboratory tests require minimum equipment for establishing a diagnosis. Among them, the cyanoacrylate skin surface stripping (CSSS), formerly named skin surface biopsy or follicular biopsy, represents a convenient low cost procedure. It is a minimally invasive method collecting a continuous sheet of stratum corneum and horny follicular casts. In the vast majority of cases, it is painless and is unassociated with adverse events. CSSS can be performed in subjects of any age. The method has a number of applications in diagnostic dermatopathology and cosmetology, as well as in experimental dermatology settings. A series of derived analytic procedures include xerosis grading, comedometry, corneofungimetry, corneodynamics of stratum corneum renewal, corneomelametry, corneosurfametry, and corneoxenometry. Human scabies is an ectoparasitosis affecting any individual at any age. The level of infestation by Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis is influenced by any defect in immune response. Several clinical types of scabies are described including baby scabies, profuse scabies of immunodepression, norvegian scabies and sarcoptic mange. Onchocerciasis dermatitis is a tropical microfilariosis completely distinct by its parasitIc nature. [less ▲]

Background: The Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) represents a heterogenous group of heritable connective tissue disorders chiefly characterized by joint laxity, increased skin distensibility and connective tissue fragility. Each EDS type corresponds to a multisystemic disorder with widespread implications. Physicians evoke the EDS diagnosis in presence of some typical cutaneous signs, such as atrophic scars and frequent hematomas. Methods: To revisit the transmission electron microscopy support from skin biopsies when screening EDS in gynecology-obstetrics. Results: EDS women commonly suffer from a series of gynecologic and obstetric disorders. Dermal ultrastructural changes are keynote features suggesting some EDS types. Conclusion: Gene mutations are mostly identified in the classic and vascular EDS types, but only in sporadic cases of the hypermobile EDS type which apparently represents the most frequent type. Dermal ultrastructural changes represent relevant diagnostic clues for the practitioner. Preconception counseling about possible complications is welcome. Management requires precise diagnosis of the EDS type. [less ▲]

For more than 70 years, the watchful-waiting management of infantile strawberry hemangiomas still prevails in a number of clinical settings. This concept appears now outdated since the introduction of well-suited beta-blockers, as well as noncoherent light and laser therapies. The aim of this work was to revisit the effect of intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy on infantile hemangioma. Information was collected from the peer-reviewed literature and illustrated by personal cases. When applied early in the evolution of infantile hemangiomas, IPL treatment stops the growth phase and induces regression with minimal cosmetic adverse effects and psychological damage. Initiating an adequate treatment is important because damage due to hemangiomas can be diminished by a timely and adequate approach. Beta-blockers have revolutionized the therapeutic strategy of infantile hemangiomas. The flash light therapy (IPL) represents an alternative therapy for some patients. [less ▲]

The frontier between the human body and the environment is largely represented by the stratum corneum. It is obvious that the skin aspect on some body sites appears dry and rough in some predisposed individuals during winter season. The reductions in the outdoor temperature, ambient moisture and dew point are the main physical factors involved in this process. We present the aspects seen under ultraviolet light and scanning electron microscopy. Keywords : Stratum corneum - Dew point [less ▲]

Some recently introduced targeted treatments in cancerology are responsible for adverse effects on the skin. These events alter the patient well-being. Adequate dermocosmetic management allows to curb the unwanted skin conditions without interfering with the targeted therapeutic effects. However, evidence-based support for using dermocosmetic products as adjunctive cancer treatment remains scarce. It remains nonetheless that the clinical perception is unanimously favourable for such procedure. [less ▲]

Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) are the most frequent human cancer. Over 90% of all BCCs have a mutation in patched homologue 1 (PTCH 1) or smoothened (SMO), two conducting proteins of the Hedgehog (Hh) pathway. They rarely progress deeply and metastasize; however, if they do, these advanced BCC become amenable to treatment by inhibiting the Hedgehog and the P13K–mTOR pathways. Such innovative drugs include vismodegib, cyclopamine, itraconazole, everolimus and a few other agents that are in early clinical development. [less ▲]

[less ▲]
