What art has to say about corporate restructuring : Revealing the unthinkable and knowing from experience Can art offer us a new sort of knowledge about corporate restructuring ? This question laid at the center of a European research project that brought together researchers, artists and persons involved in the restructuring of companies. The initial findings are presented herein. The goal was to identify and describe the sort of knowledge produced through the arts. In line with Becker’s (2007) suggestion to see works of art as possible and potentially fertile portrayals of society, what art reveals about the restructuring of firms can enhance the nature and modes of production of academic knowledge in this field. For this purpose, reference is made to works from different arts : cinema, photography, theater. Works of art are presented as a fertile, complex source that brings to light deliberately or involuntarily hidden aspects of corporate restructuring. By knowling from experience, works of art provide an unconventional view (sometimes complementary, sometimes contradictory) of the usual descriptions of economic restructuring contained in academic research. Based on sixteen exploratory interviews with Belgian philanthropic foundations, we investigate the governance mechanisms that these organizations set up in order to achieve their public interest mission. Our paper describes the Belgian foundations’ governance practices and the governance challenges these foundations are confronted with. We then discuss three critical governance issues raised by the foundation sector in Belgium, and we identify three tensions that Belgian foundations need to solve to become legitimate in the achievement of their social missions. [less ▲]

Meta-organizations emerging at the local level in order to meet new social needs arise from collective action processes. The actors supporting these innovative dynamics face the challenge of getting away from their routines and of expressing their agency in institutional contexts favoring isomorphism. Our case study of the creation process of an employer’s pool in Belgium shows that these innovations rely on a collective learning process based on actors’ reflexivity. This reflexivity can not be only of a cognitive nature. It has to be addressed in a systemic way, working at the same time on the cognitive, strategic and pragmatic features of reflexivity. Third party actors play a pivotal role in supporting these collective learning processes. They undertake a terceisation role allowing the innovative projects stakeholders to work on the many aspects of their reflexivity.
