X-ray tomography in a combination with gas chromatography was used for quantitative and qualitative analysis of adsorption front of organics distributed inside activated carbon filters during defined period of storage. This approach was tested against filters partly contaminated by CCl4 and n-heptane separately and by their mixture. X-ray tomography was shown to be capable to “recognize” different organic vaporvapours adsorbed on activated carbon and to follow their movement inside filters. Gas Chromatography was used either to monitor all possible losses of adsorbed species spices from the carbon bed, or either for “seeing” the location of each component of the mixture of organics along the filter depth. Such in situ information could be useful for evaluation of lifetime of carbon filters and for a thorough understanding of adsorption process taking place under static conditions. [less ▲]

Annual production of sewage sludge in Europe is estimated at more than ten million tons of dry matter. Use in agriculture and incineration are the main ways of valorization. In this context, sludge drying appears as an essential step after mechanical dewatering. It reduces the costs of storage and transport, allows the stabilization and the hygienization of sludge while increasing its calorific value. However, this process is highly energy consuming and still needs to be optimized as it constitutes an important economic and environmental issue. This implies the improvement of knowledge about sludge drying, including the impact of the mechanical dewatering step. Before studying experimentally the influence of polymers type and dosage use for dewatering on the rheological properties and the drying process, it is necessary to assess the stability of the sludge during of the storage. Because sludge is a living material that can rapidly change, we use the method of experimental design in order to get maximum information with minimal testing, regarding sludge stability during storage. This work is a part of a project aiming at developing a renewable fuel for gasification purposes, through convective drying of sludge/wood mixtures. The first step consists of characterizing the behavior of sawdust/sludge mixtures during the application of convective drying. The influence of the mixing step (no mixing against 30 s at 40 rpm), as well as the sawdust/sludge ratio (1/9, 2/8, 3/7 and 4/6 on a dry basis) and the effect of the drying temperature (50 °C, 80 °C and 110 °C) have been investigated. In this study, X-ray tomography, a non-invasive imaging technique, is used to assess changes in the volume, void and exchange surface at the beginning and the end of the drying process. Results first confirm the importance of the mixing step on the drying behavior: the drying rate of the mixed sludge is lower than that of the original sludge. Nevertheless the addition of sawdust is shown to have a positive impact on the drying process from a mass ratio of 2/8, with drying rates higher than that of the original sludge. With increasing amount of sawdust, the initial and final bed volumes, initial and final total exchange surfaces, and initial void fraction increase linearly, but the bed volume shrinkage and final void fraction decrease linearly. Sludges collected from Oupeye WWTP (MS=80%), Grosses Battes WWTP (MS=85.5%), and Embourg WWTP (MS=88%) in Belgium and presenting different properties were used. The influence of the sawdust/sludge ratio on convective drying was investigated in a fixed bed. X-ray tomography was used to assess changes in volume, exchange surface and void fraction. Results showed that the average drying rates were 0.062 (Oupeye), 0.079 g/s (Grosses Battes) and 0.042 g/s (Embourg) respectively, using raw sludges. For sawdust/sludge mixtures with the mass ratio of 4/6, the average drying rates of sludges were improved (Oupeye: 0.092 g/s, Grosses Battes: 0.106 g/s, Embourg: 0.049 g/s). [less ▲]

This work reports the results of an experimental study concerning on one hand the influence of water-to cement ratios (W/C), and the role of aggregates on the other hand on the drying kinetics of cement pastes during thermal drying. Three types of cement pastes were realized and studied; cement pastes with ratios W/C 0.4, W/C 0.5 and mortar with ratio W/C 0.5. These tries present the advantage to reproduce the natural conditions met in the problems of interaction atmosphere and material. Cylindrical samples of cement of size (17 X 13) mm are dried in a convective dryer. The sample is continuously weighed during the drying test and its mass is recorded every 60 s, in the purpose to obtain the drying curves. The results show that the increase of the W/C ratio leads to an increase of the drying rate due to the increase of the initial porosity. The effect of the introduction of aggregates is observable by the comparison of the drying curve obtained for the mortar and the cement pastes. The results show a decrease of the drying kinetics with mortars. The results also show that the air drying temperature has a large impact on the drying process, increasing the temperature leading to significant drying time reduction. The Effective diffusion coefficient is calculated by comparison between the experimental results and the analytical solution of Fick’s equation written for a finite medium. [less ▲]

This paper investigated the influence of Polyaluminium chloride (PAX) co-conditioning with a high linear weight polymer on the dewatering performance and the drying behavior of sludge. The CT linear polymer with a high molecular weight was used combined with PAX for sludge flocculation prior to mechanical dewatering and drying. It was found that sludge conditioned with the couple PAX/ CT led to better flocculation/dewatering process regarding size flocs and specific resistance to filtration. Concerning drying, it appeared that this chemicals combination led to improved drying rates with effect of a reduction of the drying time, when compared to polyelectrolyte used without PAX adding.
