The Fondation Universitaire Luxembourgeoise (FUL) building (completed in 1986) has been selected as a Belgian candidate for participation in the IEA (International Energy Agency) Task XI project devoted to passive solar commercial buildings. Therefore, an evaluation methodology has been set up and a monitoring plan has been defined and performed. Together with this experimental investigation, intensive computer simulation work has defined an optimized design of the building. The main results show that the recorded performance can be improved to an extent of 15% energy savings, which yields a correct performance for a passive solar building in the temperate maritime Belgian climate. The article discusses the underlying hypothesis, the limits, the range of application, and the practical operation of a versatile thermal conductivity analyzer based on a transient cylindrical probe method. The best expected precision for the conductivity determination appears to be ~±10%. A compact analyzer, integrating all the apparatus' components in the same unit, has been specifically designed for environmental research in the field. Calibration received special attention regarding thermal conductivity values in the range 0.1–3 W/mK. The analyzer was tested on seven materials, in field conditions, and discrepancies from published conductivity values did not exceed 9%. Several checks were performed in the laboratory to study the influence of experimental conditions, such as the probe insertion technique. The cylindrical probe method appears well suited to powdered materials, but may also be applied to viscous liquids and solid matter. As an application, the cylindrical probe was used to characterize nine soils from the Belgian Lorraine. After soil analysis in the dry state, thermal conductivity of each sample was determined at different moisture contents. The transient cylindrical probe method proved to be quick and easy, whether in situ or on samples in the laboratory. It is a powerful tool which can map a country's soil thermal properties. [less ▲]

L'inertie thermique dans le bâtiment est l'une des composantes les plus étudiées en architecture bioclimatique. Le principal intérêt d'une grande capacité thermique est d'assurer le confort, surtout durant l'été, en déphasant les apports extérieurs et en atténuant les fluctuations de la température extérieure. L'inertie a beaucoup été étudiée dans des cellules-tests. La démarche décrite dans cet article se base sur une modélisation par le logiciel Suncode de différentes variantes d'une maison unifamiliale, représentative du parc de logement belge. Pour une maison purement passive, il s'avère que la consommation énergétique annuelle est beaucoup moins sensible à l'inertie qu'à l'isolation de la maison. Une saturation de consommation est même atteinte pour de grandes inerties. Pour assurer un déphasage supérieur à une journée, il conviendrait de favoriser un système actif de captation de l'énergie solaire qui serait directement injectée dans le milieu des parois épaisses de la maison. A device for the measurement of thermal properties of phase change materials and, in general, of medium thermal conductivity materials, is described. The measuring cell is a modified version of the guarded hot plate technique, here designed for about 8-cm-diam samples. A well-known difficulty arises in such a device: its limitation when the sample cross section becomes too small with respect to its thickness. A finite-element model is used to study the shape of isotherms in a thick sample (10 cm) for different configurations of the measuring device. This analysis has led to the selection of the optimum design. It shows that the instrument is able to handle samples with a diameter to thickness ratio of about 1 so far as the heat transfer coefficient remains beneath some limits (here 100 W/m2 K).
