The aim of this work is to propose new contact elements of higher order of differentiability for analysing two-dimensional frictionless contact problems. Several methods were proposed in the literature to solve the problem caused by the lack of continuity resulting from the discretization. Among them are Bézier interpolation, Hermitian interpolation and splines. One of the difficulties in using Hermitian interpolation is to verify the partition of unity. Therefore, new elements that satisfy the C1 and C2 continuity at the interface are presented in this paper. These new contact elements are based on Hermitian polynomials for ensuring a higher order of continuity. The advantage is that this approach can be easily developed not only for linear elements but also for quadratic elements with higher order of differentiability. The performance of different surface representations is assessed through a comparison with a C0 surface discretization. Some numerical examples are used for assessing the accuracy and the convergence behaviour. [less ▲]

In this paper, the mechanical properties of plasma-sprayed coatings are evaluated using the technology of nanoindentation. According to the indentation curve (load versus indenter’s displacement), which is recorded in an indentation experiment, the mechanical behaviour of the plasma-sprayed coating is investigated via inverse analysis using numerical optimization algorithms. The tip rounding of imperfect indenters is investigated in parameter identification. Subsequently, the hardness on the top surface and on the vertical cross section of the plasma-sprayed coating are investigated. The results show that the hardness on the top surface of the coating depends on the indentation depth. Moreover, the results show that the hardness on the cross section of the coating is significantly affected by the substrate if the indentation impression is too close to the coating-substrate interface. The investigation of this paper provides a rationale of the influence of friction in nanoindentation testing for elasto-plastic solids. The emphasis is placed on providing a detailed evaluation of the influence of the friction coefficient on the calculated hardness using an imperfect indenter. A new method for calculating the material hardness is derived. The new function can take into account the combined effects of friction and imperfect indenter tip geometry. For further investigations, some numerical simulations are executed. The results show that the new function can provide a good relationship for the hardness calculated in all friction cases. Moreover, the numerical simulations show that the friction coefficient does not significantly affect the curve of load versus indentation depth, whereas it significantly influences the deformations of the specimen surface around the indenter for some materials.
