The Ardennaise breed is emblematic of the Belgian poultry diversity. We compared two varieties of the breed, the golden black and the silver black. The comparison encompassed: (i) the morphology of adult birds, (ii) the growth, carcass characteristics and meat quality of broilers 22 weeks old, (iii) the laying rate during 52 weeks and the egg quality. Significant differences were observed in the size of mature males and females: body weight, diameter and length of the tarsus, size of the comb and wattles. The two varieties did not differ concerning the carcass and meat quality traits. The golden black has a higher laying rate and a higher yolk / albumen ratio, but lays lighter eggs. It could be interesting to complete this study by molecular markers analysis to evaluate the degree of genetic diversity between the two varieties. [less ▲]

Avec un cheptel avoisinant les 19 millions de têtes, l'élevage ovin occupe une place importante en Algérie. Outre sa contribution de plus de 50 % dans la production nationale de viandes rouges et de 10 à 15% dans le produit intérieur brut agricole, l’élevage ovin joue un rôle socioculturel important. Il se pratique dans toutes les zones climatiques, depuis la côte méditerranéenne jusqu'aux oasis du grand Sahara. Cette diversité pédoclimatique du plus grand pays africain offre à l’Algérie une extraordinaire diversité de races ovines, avec huit races caractérisées par une rusticité remarquable, adaptées à leurs milieux respectifs. Avec 63% du cheptel ovin total, la race Ouled Djellal, aussi appelée la race Blanche, est la plus importante race ovine algérienne. Elle est exploitée principalement pour la production de viande. La race Berbère représentant un quart du cheptel ovin national, est considérée comme la plus ancienne race algérienne. Elle est menacée par les croisements non-contrôlés avec d’autres races pour l’amélioration de son potentiel productif. La troisième race ovine très importante est la Rmbi avec 11,1% du cheptel national, considérée comme la plus lourde race ovine en Algérie avec des poids avoisinants les 90 kg chez le bélier et 60kg chez la brebis. Les races Hamra, Barbarine, D'man, Sidahou et Tazegzawt représentent ensemble moins de 1% du cheptel ovin algérien. Le déclin de ces populations illustre l’érosion dramatique que subit cette richesse exceptionnelle, appelant à la mise en place d’un plan national de gestion et de conservation des ressources génétiques. Cette étude a pour objectif d’évaluer le potentiel productif de la population de poules locales de la Wilaya de Bejaia, en caractérisant d’une part les performances de croissance, et d’autre part les performances de ponte. Le suivi de la croissance des poulets a été effectué sur 204 poussins durant 17 semaines d’élevage (de mars à juin 2011). A 12 semaines d’âge, le taux de mortalité était de 9,31 % et l’indice de consommation était de 4,03. La modélisation de la courbe de croissance au moyen des équations de Gompertz a permis d’obtenir les relations suivantes : pour les mâles : Y(g)=2409e^((-3,68)〖 e〗^((-0,0260 t) ) ) pour les femelles : Y(g)=1835e^((-3,71)〖 e〗^((-0,0294 t) ) ) avec y, le poids corporel en grammes et t, l’âge des animaux en jours. Les performances de ponte ont été étudiées chez 38 poules durant 52 semaines (d’août 2011 à août 2012). En moyenne, la ponte débute à l’âge de 166 jours à un poids corporel de 1334g. La poule pond en moyenne 173 œufs par an d’un poids moyen variant avec l’âge de la poule, de 44 à 53g. Au vu de ces résultats, il apparaît que les poules locales de Bejaia constituent un réservoir génétique prometteur tant pour leurs performances de croissance que de ponte. Les données obtenues dans cette étude permettent d'envisager un usage des poules locales dans le cadre d'une production de qualité différenciée, en élevage pur ou en croisement. La selection de ce réservoir génétique permettra de produire une véritable race sur base de la population locale, ayant fixés les caractères désirés et reconnus par les éleveurs comme étant propres à la poule locale. La gestion des ressources génétiques animales est capitale pour le développement de filières de production durables. En production avicole, une érosion graduelle et régulière des ressources génétiques est observée à l'échelle mondiale. Parmi les causes de cette érosion, on retrouve principalement un abandon progressif, volontaire ou contraint, de ces races par les éleveurs. D'autres facteurs aggravant sont les épidémies, les catastrophes naturelles, les conflits et la dégradation de l’habitat de ces animaux. Néanmoins, les races de poules traditionnelles contribuent significativement à la production de viande et d’œufs. Les races indigènes représentent plus de 80 % de la population de volaille mondiale. Cependant, la majorité de ces races n’ont pas été décrites et sont mal connues. La gestion efficace des ressources génétiques animales en général et aviaires en particulier nécessite une identification précise des races concernées, la connaissance des effectifs (taille des populations) et leur distribution géographique, permettant la caractérisation de leur habitat. L’objectif de ce travail est par conséquent de caractériser les races de poules locales dans trois régions du monde : Bejaia (Algérie), le Nord du Vietnam et le Bas-Congo (République Démocratique de Congo) par une description phénotypique, une évaluation des performances zootechniques et une étude des différentes pratiques d’élevage. Une grande diversité phénotypique a été révélée dans chaque région d'étude. Les objectifs d'élevage sont multiples (alimentaire, financier et socioculturel) et variables d’un pays à un autre. Les femmes et les enfants jouent un rôle important dans l'aviculture familiale, quoique variable entre les régions d'étude. Ainsi, les solutions visant à la promotion des races de poules locales doivent être adaptées à la spécificité de chaque contexte. [less ▲]

Le mouton Azegzaw est de robe blanche avec des taches noires à reflets bleuâtres sur le chanfrein, le pourtour des yeux et le lobe des oreilles. Non répertoriée par le standard des races ovines algériennes, cette race présente pourtant des qualités intéressantes d'adaptation aux régions montagneuses de Kabylie, ce qui justifie la mise en œuvre d’un programme de conservation de ce patrimoine génétique original. L’objectif de cette étude, est (1) de caractériser la morpho-biométrie de moutons de race Tazegzawth et (2) de déterminer des équations barymétriques destinées à l’estimation du poids vif (PV) au départ des mensurations corporelles (périmètre thoracique: PT ; longueur du corps: LDC ; hauteur au garrot : HG ; hauteur à la croupe : HC). Au total, 89 sujets adultes (12 mâles, 77 femelles) sont concernés par cette étude. Les mensurations corporelles moyennes observées sont : - PV: 41,53±0,53 kg (mâle: 46,71kg et femelle: 40,72kg) ; - PT: 73,52±0,45 cm (mâle: 78,37cm et femelle: 72,77cm) ; - LDC: 89,10±0,44 cm (mâle: 93,82cm et femelle: 88,37cm) ; - HG: 71,40±0,43 cm (mâle: 76,06cm et femelle: 70,68cm); - HC: 70,14±0,42 (mâle: 74,80cm cm et femelle: 69,42). Les formules retenues pour l’estimation du PV sont: - Tous sexes confondus : PV=-0,025 HG2 + 4,78HG-169,88 (R2=0,87) - Femelles : PV = -0,038HG2 +6,58HG-232,39 (R2=0,84) - Mâles : PV = -0,16LDC2+0,21 HC2+284,92 (R2=0,99) En dépit de l’échantillon réduit dans l’étude, celui-ci a révélé des caractéristiques relativement homogènes. A study in experimental slatted-system fattening pig units was conducted with the aim of estimating the odour emission factor (in ou/s.pig), which can subsequently be used in dispersion models to assess the odour annoyance zone. Dynamic olfactometry measurements carried out at different development stages of pigs showed a logical trend of the mean predicted odour emission factor with the pig weight. However, the variation within the same weight class was much larger than variation between classes. Possible causes of such variation were identified as the evolution of ventilation rate during the day and the circadian rhythm of pig. To be able to monitor continuously the daily variation of the odour, an electronic nose was used with suitable regression model calibrated against olfactometric measurements. After appropriate validation check, the electronic nose proved to be convenient, as a complementary tool to dynamic olfactometry, to record the daily variation of the odour emission factor in the pig barn. It was demonstrated that, in the controlled conditions of the experimental pens, the daily variation of the odour emission rate could be mainly attributed to the sole influence of the circadian rhythm of pig. As a consequence, determining a representative odour emission factor in a real case cannot be based on a snapshot odour sampling. [less ▲]

In pig production, the interest for litter systems in relation with animal welfare and the ban by 2013 in the EU of individual accommodations for gestating sows could promote the group-housing of gestating sows on deep-litter. However, compared to slatted-floor systems, few data are available on the gaseous emissions associated with the different modalities of rearing sows on deep-litter. In this study, two modalities were compared: group housing on a 3 m2/sow deep-litter or on a 1.8 m2/sow deep-litter plus 1.2 m2/sow concrete floor. In both cases, sows were fed in individual feeding stalls (1.2 m2/stall) but the access was limited at feeding time in the first case and permanent in the second one. Three successive batches of 10 gestating sows were used. Each batch was divided into 2 homogeneous groups randomly allocated to one of two treatments: fully (3 m2/sow) or partly (1.8 m2/sow) straw-based deep-bedded floor. The groups were kept separately in two identical rooms with same volume and same surface, equipped with five individual feeding stalls in contact with a pen of either 9 or 15 m2 deep-litter. The feeding stalls were equipped with front feeding troughs and rear gates allowing or not permanent access to the stalls outside of feeding times. Between each batch, the pens were cleaned. In both rooms, ventilation was automatically adapted to maintain a constant ambient temperature. The gas emissions (nitrous oxide, methane, carbon dioxide, ammonia and water vapour) were measured 3 times (weeks 2, 5 and 8 of stay) during 6 consecutive days by infrared photoacoustic detection. Sow performance was not significantly affected by floor type. With sows kept on partly bedded floor, gaseous emissions were significantly greater for methane (12.76 vs. 9.90 g/d.sow; P<0.001), carbon dioxide (3.12 vs. 2.90 kg/d.sow; P<0.01) and water vapour (4.70 vs. 4.03 kg/d.sow; P<0.001), and significantly lower for nitrous oxide (3.14 vs. 6.12 g/d.sow; P<0.001) and CO2 equivalents (1.24 vs. 2.10 kg/d.sow; P<0.001) compared to sows housed on fully bedded floor. There was no significant difference for ammonia emissions (8.36 vs. 7.45 g/d.sow; P>0.05). From the present trial in experimental rooms, it can be concluded that keeping group-housed gestating sows on partly straw bedded floor with permanent access to the concrete feeding stalls compared to fully straw bedded floor did not significantly influence animal performance and NH3-emissions, and decreased CO2eq-emissions (-40%). This decrease was observed owing to an important decrease of N2O-emissions (-49%). [less ▲]

La poule Ardennaise est une race emblématique de la biodiversité avicole belge. Dans un contexte mondial favorable à la conservation des races locales d’animaux domestiques, cette étude est consacrée à la comparaison de deux variétés de la race Ardennaise (Noire dorée et Noire Argentée). La comparaison est réalisée par le biais de trois études: (1) caractérisation morpho-biométrique des deux variétés; (2) caractérisation de la croissance et de la qualité de la carcasse et de la viande; (3) suivi du taux de ponte pendant 52 semaines et l’étude de la qualité des œufs à 30, 45, 60 et 75 semaines d’âge. Des différences significatives ont été enregistrées au niveau des poids corporels, du grand diamètre du tarse, de la longueur du tarse et de la taille de la crête des deux variétés. La variété de la poule Ardennaise n’influence pas significativement les caractères quantitatifs et qualitatifs de production de viande (rendement, poids après abattage, pH, couleur de la viande). Elle influence cependant significativement le poids de l’œuf entier, le poids du blanc, le pourcentage du blanc, le pourcentage du jaune, le rapport jaune/blanc et le pH du blanc (p<0,05). Pour plusieurs caractères morphologiques, d’engraissement et de ponte, les deux variétés ne présentent aucune différence significative. Il serait intéressant de compléter cette étude par une analyse moléculaire permettant de préciser le degré de similitude génétique entre les deux variétés et éventuellement avec les autres variétés de la race. Quality variations of retailed eggs are widely reported. This study aims at assessing the quality of eggs according to the marketing channel in the department of Bejaia (Algeria). In spring and summer 2012, a total of 3330 eggs were bought in 30 stores divided into 3 categories: 10 supermarkets (1146 eggs), 10 public markets (1048 eggs), and 10 shops (1136 eggs). The eggs weights differed significantly with the marketing channel with 58.9±0.14, 61.2±0.13 and 62.8±0.13 g for public markets, shops and supermarkets, respectively (p<0.001). Although the shell thickness was similar for all marketing channels, the proportion of damaged eggs was higher in public markets (9.0%), intermediate in shops (7.3%) and lower in supermarkets (5.7%; p<0.05). The yolk/albumen ratio was significantly higher for eggs from supermarkets (48.1%) compared to the other channels (around 47.4%; p<0.05). The freshness of the eggs, measured by the Haugh method, was lower in public markets (74.3 units), intermediate in shops (77.6 units) and higher in supermarkets (79.9 units; p<0.05). The price of eggs, expressed in Algerian Dinar (AD) per kg, was significantly lower in public markets (124 AD/kg) compared to the two other channels (around 131 AD/kg; p<0.05). One can conclude that egg quality in Basse Kabylie differs significantly between marketing channels with higher quality observed in supermarkets. The lower quality of eggs in public markets is associated with lower price. Eggs from shops present an intermediate quality. A one-year study would allow studying both the potential seasonal effect and compare intrinsic variability across marketing channels. [less ▲]

According to the literature, the diet composition of livestock can influence polluting gas emissions from agriculture. The aim of this preliminary study was to measure gaseous emissions from fattening pigs offered an ad libitum high-fibre diet (HFD) and kept on fully slatted floor. A batch of 24 fattening pigs was divided into two homogeneous groups randomly allocated to a treatment: conventional cereals-based diet or sugar beet pulpbased diet (HFD). With HFD, a significant decrease of animal performance was observed (837 vs. 962 g for the average daily gain). With pigs offered HFD, gaseous emissions per pig were significantly lower for NH3 (-30%, 6.64 vs. 9.47 g/d; P<0.05) and significantly greater for CH4 (+40%, 6.46 vs. 4.60 g/d; P<0.05). The emissions of N2O (0.34 g/d), CO2equivalent (0.27 kg/d), CO2 (1.68 kg/d) were not significantly influenced by the diet. Due to a more important microbial activity with HFD, the lower NH3-emissions could be attributed to the shift of a part of excreted nitrogen from urine (as urea) to faeces (as protein form), and to a lower slurry pH explained by the increase of volatile fatty acid content. The higher CH4-emissions could be explained by a greater production in the digestive tract and in the slurry due to fibre fermentations. In conclusion, HFD allowed decreasing NH3- and increasing CH4-emissions. However, in terms of climate change, this increase was offset by the decrease of indirect N2O-emissions due to NH3-emission decrease, as indicated by the similar CO2equivalent-emissions in the two groups. A study was carried out to investigate the effect of dietary fibre content (23% of non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) with a standard diet based on cereals vs. 44% of NSP with a fibrous diet based on sugar beet pulp) and the floor type (slatted floor vs. straw-based deep litter) on emissions of ammonia (NH3), nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4) and CO2-equivalents (Eq-CO2). Six successive batches of 10 gestating sows were divided into 2 groups kept in 2 experimental rooms differing by the floor type. The standard diet was administered to the sows of the first 3 batches, the fibrous diet to the sows of the next 3 batches. Emissions were measured by infra-red photoacoustic detection. With the slatted floor, the fibrous diet decreased NH3 emission (12.0 vs. 15.5 g sow-1.d-1) but increased the Eq-CO2 emissions (0.69 vs. 0.57 kg sow-1.d-1) in relation to an increase of CH4 emissions (18.4 vs. 12.8 g sow-1.d-1), the N2O emissions not being impacted by the diet, with value around 0.62 g sow-1.d-1. With the straw-bedded floor, the fibrous diet increased the emissions of NH3 (12.3 vs. 9.2 g sow-1.d-1) and CH4 (14.6 vs. 9.6 g sow-1.d-1) but decreased N2O emissions (0.99 vs. 1.64 g/ sow-1.d-1) with the consequence that Eq-CO2 emissions were similar for the two diets, around 0.74 kg sow-1.d-1. Pig production is an important contributor to polluting gases emissions like ammonia (NH3) and greenhouse gases (GHG). Apart from environmental aspects, animal welfare is also an issue of growing importance. The fattening of pigs on deep litter bedded system is consider as more animal friendly than the fattening on slatted floor, but it is also more expensive and requests more labour. The use of straw flow rather than straw deep litter could be a good compromise because of a reduced need for surface area, straw, labour and manure storage, combined with satisfying animal welfare. In order to evaluate the environmental impact of this rearing technique, a study was designed to quantify pollutant gas emissions of this system compared to the deep litter system for fattening pigs. Three successive batches of 32 Landrace fattening pigs were used. They were divided into 2 homogeneous groups of 16 animals randomly allocated to two treatments: straw deep litter or straw flow. The groups were kept simultaneously for a period of 4 months and separately in two identical rooms in volume (103 m3) and surface (30.2 m2) and fitted either with a deep litter pen (1.2 m2/pig) or with a straw flow system (0.75 m2/pig). Throughout the fattening period, 46.9 and 34.4 kg straw were used respectively per pig. In deep litter pen, the litter was removed after each batch. In the straw flow pen, the straw, mixed with dung, travelled down the slope by pig motion and went out of the pen to a scraped passage. The solid fraction was scraped every day, stored in a heap in the room and removed every month, 1 week before each period of gaseous emission measurement. The liquid fraction was automatically pumped from the scraped passage into a hermetic tank, which was emptied at the end of each fattening period. In both rooms, ventilation was automatically adapted to maintain a constant ambient temperature. Once a month, the emissions of ammonia (NH3), nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and water vapour (H2O) were measured continuously for 6 consecutive days by infra-red photoacoustic detection. Animal performance (final body weight, body weight gain, and feed conversion ratio), some carcass quality parameters and manure characteristics were not significantly affected by floor type. With fattening pigs kept in a straw flow pen, gaseous emissions were significantly greater (P < 0.05) for NH3 (+10%) and significantly lower (P < 0.001) for N2O (−55%), CH4 (−46%), CO2 equivalents (−47%), CO2 (−10%) and H2O (−23%) compared to pigs housed on straw-based deep litter. Thus, the use of straw flow system for pig fattening allows reducing the GHG emissions but presents the disadvantage of increasing the NH3 emissions. [less ▲]

Usually, gestating sows are restrictedly-fed to prevent excessive body weight gain and fat deposition. However, feed restriction causes sustained feeding motivation resulting in stereotypic behaviour and impairment of animal welfare. High fibre diets (HFD) are known to reduce feeding motivation without impairments of performance but the effects of HFD on emissions of pollutant gases are very few studied. Thus, a study was carried out to compare the effect of two fibre contents (standard diet (STD) with 22% of non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) vs. HFD with 44% of NSP) on emissions of ammonia (E-NH3), nitrous oxide (E-N2O), methane (E-CH4) and CO2-equivalents (E-EqCO2) associated to gestating sows. Three successive batches of 10 gestating sows were divided into 2 homogeneous groups and randomly allocated to one of two treatments: STD vs. HFD. The groups were kept separately in two identical rooms equipped with a pen divided into a lying area with slatted floor and five individual feeding stalls with permanent access. Emissions were measured by infrared photoacoustic detection. The HFD significantly decreased ENH3 (12.1 vs. 15.9 g/sow.day) but increased E-EqCO2 (0.68 vs. 0.47 kg/sow.day) in relation with an increase of E-CH4 (18.4 vs. 9.1 g/sow.day), E-N2O being not impacted by the diet, with value around 0.60 g/sow.day. So, the effects of HFD offered to gestating sows on slatted floor on environment seem conflicting with a decrease of NH3 emissions which mainly contribute to acidification of soils and waters and eutrophication, but an increase of CO2-quivalents emissions which contribute to greenhouse effect and climate change.
