Experts agree that PE can play a key role in the promotion of a lifelong active lifestyle. In many countries, the PE teacher is seen as the most appropriate staff member to coordinate health education at school. However, in Belgium the PE programme does not expressively mention lifelong active lifestyle as a priority objective (Ministère de la Communauté française, 2000). Nevertheless, PE teachers consider traditionally that they should encourage lifelong sport participation but there is no study verifying whether they actually do. Our purpose was to verify wether Wallonian PE teachers were aware of their role as physical activity promoters by identifying the actions that they use in their schools. [less ▲]

Our study focused on an analysis of secondary schools which were renowned for placing a real emphasis on physical education, sport and/or active lifestyles. The originality of this research lies in the fact that the study represents a comparison of schools from three different cultures in Europe. Our purpose was to determine whether the students were aware of the role their secondary school played in promoting an active lifestyle and influencing their physical activity levels. The findings should provide useful feedback to practitioners in terms of both their current and future practice. [less ▲]

The concept of the ‘active school’ emerged a decade ago as the role with increasing recognition of the role of schools in the promotion of physical activity. The purpose of this paper is to present the findings of a study which, drawing on Cale’s ‘Active School’ model, aimed to compare the nature and extent of physical activity promotion in secondary schools in three European regions. In so doing, it aimed to establish whether there were cultural differences in the strategies and approaches adopted by schools. [less ▲]
