The physical characterization of exoplanets will require to take spectra at several orbital positions. For that purpose, a direct imaging capability is necessary. Direct imaging requires an efficient stellar suppression mechanism, associated with an ultrasmooth telescope. We show that before future large space missions (interferometer, 4-8 m class coronograph, external occulter or Fresnel imager), direct imaging of giant planets and close-by super-Earth are at the cross-road of a high scientific interest and a reasonable feasibility. The scientific interest lies in the fact that super-Earths share common geophysical attributes with Earths. They already begin to be detected by radial velocity (RV) and, together with giant planets, they have a larger area than Earths, making them detectable with a 1.5-2 m class telescope in reflected light. We propose such a (space) telescope be a first step before large direct imaging missions. [less ▲]

I will present the PEGASE project proposed within the framework of the CNES call for idea on flights in formation. This ambitious project, gathering a dozen laboratories, proposes an interferometry mission in infrared I(1.5 to 6 µm) with spectroscopic capabilities. The bases of the interferometer will reach up to 500m, giving to PEGASE a resolution higher than the milli-arcsecond. The interferometric recombination includes a very simple mode, measurement of the visibility by excursion of the optical path difference and a mode in black fringe or nulling. The very high angular resolution of the instrument and high dynamical range with the nulling mode will allow to consider exciting scientific objectives: the characterization of Pegasids or hot Jupiters, the study of the internal structure and the atmospheres of brown dwarfs and the analysis of the internal areas of proto-planetary disks. I will first of all describe the basic configuration of the mission and will show that its simplicity ensures the feasibility of the project. I will explain then the relevance of such an instrument for the characterization of Pegasids. I will detail finally the various possible technical options to be attached to the initial version, in order to increase the effectiveness of the mission and to extend its scientific objectives. The Optical Monitoring Camera (OMC) will observe the optical emission from the prime targets of the gammaray instruments onboard the ESA mission INTEGRAL, with the support of the JEM-X monitor in the X-ray domain. This capability will provide invaluable diagnostic information on the nature and the physics of the sources over a broad wavelength range. Its main scientific objectives are: ( 1) to monitor the optical emission from the sources observed by the gamma- and X-ray instruments, measuring the time and intensity structure of the optical emission for comparison with variability at high energies, and ( 2) to provide the brightness and position of the optical counterpart of any gamma- or X-ray transient taking place within its field of view. The OMC is based on a refractive optics with an aperture of 50 mm focused onto a large format CCD (1024 x 2048 pixels) working in frame transfer mode (1024 x 1024 pixels imaging area). With a field of view of 5degrees x 5degrees it will be able to monitor sources down to magnitude V = 18. Typical observations will perform a sequence of different integration times, allowing for photometric uncertainties below 0.1 mag for objects with V less than or equal to 16. [less ▲]

Twenty colonic adenocarcinomas were studied by immunofluorescence with antisera against components of the basement membrane: type IV collagen, laminin and heparan sulfate-rich proteoglycan, as well as antisera against antigens of the connective tissue: type-III collagen, fibronectin and hyaluronectin. Marked alterations of the basement membranes were consistently observed on staining with each one of the first three antisera. In contrast, staining of the normal components of connective tissue was in most cases as intense as in normal colonic mucosa. Hyaluronectin, a marker of peritumoral stroma, was found to be present in 12 out 15 tumors studied. [less ▲]
