The essential oil of Laurus nobilis floral buds (FB) collected in Tunisia was obtained by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC-MS. Twenty three constituents were identified. The main components of this oil were α-terpinyl acetate (28.43 %), methyl eugenol (19.57 %), eugenol (7.42 %) and elemicin (4.41 %). The antioxidant activity of the oil of Laurus nobilis FB was evaluated by two methods, β-carotene bleaching (BCB) test and 2.2-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay using respectively butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), trolox, gallic acid, caffeic acid and δ-tocopherol as standards. It was found that the Laurus nobilis FB oil have a significant antioxidant effect when tested by each method respectively. The antioxidant activity of this oil is more effective than the synthetic antioxidant (BHT) at 200 ppm and can be attributed to the active compounds eugenol, elemicin and methyl eugenol present in this essential oil. The chemical composition of the volatiles obtained from the fixed oils of Nigella sativa L. seeds, growing in Algeria, was investigated by GC and GC/MS analysis. Two solvents were studied for extracting the oils, hexane and isopropanol. The composition of Nigella sativa seeds varieties having four location origins in Algeria, were determined. Alcohols and ketones formed the main proportion using the two solvents, respectively (hexane: 27.4-36.1 %, isopropanol: 40.2-59.0 %) and (hexane: 39.9-44.3 %, isopropanol: 17.5-50.7 %), among which thymoquinone and thymohydroquinone were the predominant antioxidant compounds. The monoterpene hydrocarbons constitute relatively the lower fraction compared to the precedent chemical families, particularly by using the isopropanol solvent. [less ▲]

The Nigella Sativa, eastern plant from the Mediterranean basin and other areas of the world, is very much used as condiment and medicinal application. The microwave extraction allows to obtain oils in a very short time and with a better quality and yields. The GC and GC/MS analysis of oils shows that are rich in volatile of biosynthesis compounds such as the p-cymene and the thymoquinone which have medicinal properties. The undesirable products caused by the reactions of hydrolysis and the heating effect such as acids, alcohols and oxides are relatively reduced. The monoterpenes and ketones constitute the principal classes of our oils. In addition, the analytical study reveals that the seeds cultivated in the arid regions are rich in thymoquinone which constitutes the principal active component of Nigella Sativa seeds . [less ▲]
