The reconstruction of a discretized random distributed loading, as the wind pressure from some measurement taps, is usually performed by simple or advanced interpolation between the nodes of the mesh. This results in an overestimation of the coherence of the loading, especially in the high frequency range where the loading typically shows less coherence. An expensive way to circumvent this issue is to make the mesh denser. This is however not always possible, in particular in experimental testing where there is usually a limited number of available measurement spots. The concept of numerical admittance is introduced in order to rectify this inaccurate estimation of the resulting loading in the high-frequency range. It is actually introduced as a legitimate way of reducing the loading in accordance with the looseness of the discretisation mesh. Another major advantage of the concept is the opportunity to determine adequately the mesh size independently from the correlation length scale. [less ▲]

Both steel and concrete suffer a progressive reduction in both strength and stiffness as their temperature increases in fire conditions. Eurocode 3 and Eurocode 4 provide material models for both materials over an extensive range of temperatures; Fire resistance of structural elements is quoted as the time at which they cannot maintain their load bearing capacity; It is possible to assess the severity of a natural fire for a particular steel element as a time-equivalent between the peak temperature in the steel element and the same temperature in the element submitted to the ISO834 standard curve; The behaviour of separate elements is very different from that of a complete building frame, but the only practical way of assessing whole-structure behaviour is to use advanced calculation models; Traditional fire protection of steelwork is by covering it with insulating material during construction. However it may be possible under Eurocode 3 to use a combination of passive and active strategies to ensure fire resistance; Eurocode 3 calculation of fire resistance takes account of the loading level on the element, with values of the safety factors lower than those used at room temperatures; Fire resistance may be calculated in terms of time, as a load-bearing resistance at a certain time, or as a critical element temperature appropriate to the load level and required time of exposure; Critical temperature is calculated from a single equation in terms of the load level in fire for members of Classes 1, 2 or 3 sections if there is no instability phenomena involved. Class 4 sections are universally assumed to have a critical temperature of 350°C, but higher critical temperatures can be obtained by calculation; Eurocode 3 provides simple calculations for the load resistance in fire of all types of elements. In cases where the strength is controlled by buckling, a buckling curve that is particular for the fire situation has to be used. The slenderness of the element is temperature dependent; It is possible to calculate the temperature growth of protected or unprotected members in small time increments, in a way which can easily be implemented on a spreadsheet. This contribution presents the results of a research projects analysing some aspects of stability failure of thin-walled RHS compression members that are likely to exhibit combined global and local buckling. In particular the influence of various imperfections, namely residual stresses due to welding and local as well as global geometrical defects, on the load-carrying capacity is subjected to detailed experimental and numerical investigations. The insight into the structural behaviour leads to recommendations for standardized imperfections that should be used in the context of the numerical modelling of class-4 square and rectangular hollow section members subjected to compression. This paper focuses on the behaviour of I-girder web panels subjected to combined bending and shear and stiffened by longitudinal trapezoidal stiffeners. This implies to account for the coupling between local panel buckling between stiffeners and global buckling of the whole stiffened panel. The study is restricted to panels with one or two longitudinal stiffeners, for which the well-known orthotropic plate approach may not be relevant. For such configurations, the most recent design rules available may either not address this specific problem or be too conservative. This contribution provides information on the behaviour of such girders based on numerical simulations. Results of extensive non-linear FEM calculations are presented and discussed. The effects of aspect ratio, web slenderness and position of stiffeners are studied. Numerical results are compared to design loads obtained according to Eurocode 3 Part 1.5. The parameter study shows that several aspects of the code may be improved and proposals in this respect are given and validated through the numerical results. In particular, the beneficial effect of closed longitudinal stiffeners is highlighted. It is shown that the high level of torsional rigidity exhibited by welded trapezoidal stiffeners may significantly increase the overall resistance of the web panel. [less ▲]

This paper presents the results of a research project analysing some aspects of stability failure of thin-walled compression members likely to exhibit combined global and local buckling. In particular, the influence of various imperfections (namely residual stresses due to welding and local as well as global geometrical defects) on the load-carrying capacity was subject to detailed experimental and numerical investigations. The insight into the structural behaviour lead to a modification of the non-dimensional slenderness used in the global buckling verification and to the recommendation of a shift from the currently applied European buckling curve to a more favourable one in the case of non-stiffened members with welded box sections subjected to pure compression. The paper summarizes the investigations on shear resistance of I-girders longitudinally stiffened by closed trapezoidal stiffeners, performed in the frame of a European RFCS project (RFS-CR-03018) designated as “ComBri” (Competitive Steel and Composite Bridges by improved Steel Plated Structures), with configurations typical of what may be expected in the design of modern steel bridges. It first reports on four full-scale tests performed at RWTH Aachen, on stiffened panels with strong closed stiffeners where the deformations have been measured with photogrammetric devices. As expected, failure in the subpanels has been governing. A devoted FEA shell model is then described and validated towards these results and other experimental sources. The numerical simulations demonstrate a very good agreement with the test-results. Parametric studies performed with a sophisticated numerical tool help pointing out several aspects where the recommendations of EN 1993-1-5 [1] on stiffened panels in bending and shear may be improved. Special attention is paid to situations involving one or two stiffeners, where Eurocode 3 Part 1.5 provides specific rules. First, the paper describes briefly the FEM numerical models used in parametric studies. Eurocode 4 is the European design code for composite construction; in its so-called ENV version, the scope is limited to "nonsway buildings" with efficient bracing systems. Therefore, it gives mainly rules to analyze and to check structural elements like beams, columns, slabs, and joints. However, in the last years, the construction of taller buildings and larger industrial halls without wind bracing systems is susceptible to make global instability a relevant failure mode, which is not covered by Eurocode 4. For 3 years, in the framework of a European research project funded by the European Community for Steel and Coal, in which the Univ. of Liege was deeply involved, intensive experimental, numerical, and theoretical investigations have been carried out. The latter aimed at improving the knowledge in the field of sway composite frames and at developing appropriate design rules. The rotational behavior of the beam-to-column composite joints is one of the key aspects of the problem to which special attention has been paid. This paper presents the numerical and analytical studies carried out at Liege Univ., as part of above European project, with the objective to investigate the behavior of sway composite structures under static loading. Particular phenomena put into sight through different analyses are illustrated herein. The actual response of the beam-to-column composite joints may be easily integrated into the described design and analysis procedures; this specific aspect is therefore not addressed in the paper. The slenderness of plated structures together with a generalised use of high strength steel leads to a great importance of stability phenomena. The practical way to deal with such problems is to use rules proposed in design codes. A common alternative to design codes is the use of non linear finite element simulations. One of the most sensitive point in these simulations is the choice of the initial imperfections to be introduced in the model. The present paper discusses the effect of initial imperfections on the calculated collapse load. Several parameters are considered (shape, magnitude and direction). Results of numerical simulations are also compared with those of a design using Eurocode 3 or ECCS Recommendations. Two cases of plate geometry are studied (plate with one single stiffener and plate with multiple stiffeners). [less ▲]

In the present paper the background and the traditional field of application of the Merchant-Rankine formula are first described. Its extension to the design of steel frames with so-called semi-rigid joints is then presented and justified.
