The present paper proposes a codicologic, palaeographic and contextual study of an extraordinary Late Antique book: the Montserrat codex miscellaneus. Dated on palaeographic grounds to the IV century AD, this manuscript provides us with evidence of particular interest on bilingualism and digraphism in Byzantine Egypt, for it is the only antique codex containing texts in both Greek and Latin, of both Christian and Secular content, and pertaining to different literary genres, such as rhetoric, hexametric poetry and Christian liturgy. This paper presents a linguistic description of the Barcelona Alcestis, an anonymous Latin poem contained in a fourth century papyrus codex. Traces of Vulgar Latin are identified in the orthography, which reveals the language as it was heard, understood and spoken by the copyist, whereas the syntactic features of the text can inform us about the language used by the author in the time of the composition.
