A comparison of two works intended for projection—a photographic show by Gustave Marissiaux titled La Houillère and a film by Lucien Nonguet and Ferdinand Zecca, Au pays noir, both about coal mine working conditions and released in 1905—shows that the division between these two media corresponds to a division that is both social and aesthetic. The photographic realism of the industrial documentary is diametrically opposed to the social, but theatrical, realism of the fiction film. We can therefore recast the story of early mining films (until André Capellani’s Germinal, 1913) as a gradual integration of photographic and social realism. [less ▲]
