X-ray microtomography is a powerful non-invasive visualisation technique which can be advantageously used to get a better understanding or dynamic adsorption processes. In the present work, this technique is shown to be able to detect wall effects during the dynamic adsorption of methyl iodide on activated carbon filters. The analysis of transversal cross-sections along the filter height clearly shows the existence of radial concentration profiles. These radial adsorption profiles are directly linked to velocity profiles due to a higher permeability at the wall. Obtaining Such in situ information constitutes a real progress in order to validate simulation models allowing predicting reliable breakthrough times. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. X-ray microtomography coupled with image analysis was used to quantify the adsorption of vapours on activated carbon beds. This technique was tested using three different challenges: CCl4, water vapour and a mixture of water- and organic vapour. It is shown that the used technique allows determining the adsorption front progress in the case of organic vapour and mixture of water and organic vapour whereas the existence of this front was not so obvious in the case of water vapour. Experimental results obtained for organic vapours were interpreted on the basis of the Wheeler-Jonas equation: a good agreement was found between experimental and theoretical breakthrough times. Micro- and mesopore structure modifications in silica low-density xerogels induced by additives in TEOS-based alcogels precursors are discussed on the basis of image analysis of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs and nitrogen adsorption-desorption experiments. To perform image analysis, novel image processing has been developed on the basis of classical signal treatment and mathematical morphology theory. The obtained results have been correlated with classical and fractal interpretation of nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. [less ▲]
