Based on observations in the field, for ten years, Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech (ULg) and the Catholic University of Louvain set annual benchmarks for nitrate-nitrogen concentrations in the soil at the beginning of the leaching period (referred to as ‘PLN’ - Potentially Leachable Nitrogen). These values are used as a reference to monitor farmers located in vulnerable zones, with the monitoring being carried out by the Public Service of Wallonia. Soil samples were taken twice a year (October and December) from approximately 250 plots subjected to reasoned nitrogen fertilization. The plots were located within 34 reference farms (constituting the Agricultural Survey Areas). The samples were then analyzed for nitrate-nitrogen content. The results allowed to establish reference values for eight classes of cultivation or meadow. Analysis of the results recorded in 2011, as in previous years, illustrates the importance of “crop” and “year” in establishing reference values. [less ▲]

In accordance with the Nitrates Directive, the third “Durable Nitrogen Management Plan” (PGDA) will be soon reviewed in Wallonia (Belgium). The second “Nitrate – Water” workshop took place between 28th May and 1st June 2012. The workshop was attended by both Belgian scientists (Université catholique de Louvain - UCL, Walloon Agricultural Research Center CRA-W, Université de Liège - ULg, Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech) and French scientists (National Institute for Agricultural Research - INRA). In the light of the results of experiments presented by scientists at this workshop, modifications to the PGDA are now recommended. These concern organic and mineral nitrogen fertilization for crops and meadows; catch crops; soil nitrate-nitrogen residue limitation in autumn, at the start of the nitrate leaching period; the management of meadow ploughing and a modification of the dairy cow standard for nitrogen production. Within the Walloon Action Programme, transposition of the Nitrates Directive, the Administration organizes each year a control of the soil nitrate nitrogen residues in about 900 parcels located in vulnerable zone in order to verify if the practices of nitrogen spreading by the farmers are in accordance with the Walloon Action Programme. The current method is to yearly spot “suspects” by a control in three parcels in about 300 farms and to follow “suspects” by an observation programme wich leads after maximum six years to a penalty or to the end of this programme. The present statistical study means to assess the public control’s methodology: what is the probability to penalize a “good” farmer, to forget a “bad” farmer? This study is based on real data and on a theoretical approach. Both conclusions indicate that the official methodology is sufficiently appropriate. [less ▲]

Towards a revison of the dairy cow's standard for nitrogen production: justification and what are consequences for soil link rate of dairy farms. At present, the dairy cow's standard of nitrogen production in Walloon region is 90 kg per year. This standard is used to calculate the "soil link rate" of farms, a balance between the organic nitrogen to be spread on land and the quantity legally authorized considering grassland and arable land area. This standard is appreciably lower than that fixed by other member states and was criticized by the European Commission during the negotiations having ended in the second program of sustainable nitrogen management. Further to new studies, it seems that the gaseous loss of nitrogen averages in buildings and during the storage is weaker than the 15% value which was used to justify this 90 kg standard. It also seems that there are big differences of average dairy production and average rate of urea according to the agricultural regions and consequently that regional production standards correspond better to the reality. On basis of these mean values, the dairy cow's annual productions of nitrogen vary between 81 kg per year in grassy region of Fagne and 99 kg per year in Haute Ardenne and in grassy region from Liege. For the Walloon region in general, the average production is 94 kg per year. The adoption of different values of dairy cow's nitrogen production by region would lead to an increase of 8% of the soil link rate of dairy farms in Haute Ardenne and of 7% in grassy region from Liege and a decrease of 7% in grassy region of Fagne. Study on environmental factors influencing the urea content of cow milk in Wallonia (Belgium). The urea content in tank milk is currently assessed in Wallonia (Belgium) for all milk producers by the Comité du lait. A statistical analysis was carried out on 5,675,758 data collected over the 2002-2008 period in order to study the variation in the urea content in milk from cows according to the months of the years and the agronomy areas. The data were analyzed with a linear model (proc GLM) including the fixed effects of the area, the month of sampling, the year and the interactions. The fat and proteins contents in milk were used as covariables. The average urea content in milk over the six years was 258 mg.l-1. A proportion of 19% of the contents were over 350 mg.l-1and 10% over 400 mg.l-1. The model explained 35% of the variation of the urea content. Within the model, the agronomy area was the most explicative component (44%). It was followed by the area-month interaction (18.6%), the protein content (17.8%) and the month (10.5%). The variation of the urea content in milk could be mainly explained by the differences in the diets offered to the lactating dairy cows according to the agronomy areas. The composition of the diets varies with the crops produced and therefore with the agronomy area. Higher urea contents were observed in areas with a lot of pastures (grazing areas) than in the arable areas. In the grazing areas, feedstuffs higher in protein than in energy are consumed by the cows: the excess of protein is probably the reason for the higher urea content. The feedstuffs produced in the arable areas are more various with more diversified and balanced diets. The season influenced also the urea content, a higher urea content being observed during the summer period as compared with the winter period. The changes could be explained by dietary differences between the indoor winter period and the grazing period in Summer. During the indoor period, the dairy cows are offered normally a complete diet which is more balanced than during the grazing period. [less ▲]

Nitrogen (N) rejections are a problem of importance in cattle production. In pasture, the amounts of N rejected by the cattle are large since grass N content exceeds the ‘animals’ requirements. The present study aims to quantify, with dairy cows in a rotational system, N rejections from urine. The trial paddocks were fertilized with compost, slurry or mineral N and grazed during 7 days by 35 dairy cows in late lactation. Milk urea concentration was determined in tank milk samples every day. Urine samples were taken from each cow at the 3rd and the 5th day after the entry in the grazing plot. Urine N and creatinin were determined to quantify urine N excretion. These observed values were compared to urine N excretion data obtained from dry matter intake and grass N content. The mean observed urine N excretion of 312 g N day-1 was similar to the mean calculated urine N excretion of 330 g N day-1. The correlation between calculated urinary N excretion and observed urinary N excretion was significant (P<0.001; r2= 22.4%) and the correlation between observed urinary N excretion and milk urea content tended to be significant (P<0.10; r2 =60%). From these data, it appears that urine N excretion prediction can be more precise with tank milk urea than with urine N excretion calculated from N intake. This research has to be continued and to be repeated during other grazing periods and with cows at different lactation periods to validate the results. [less ▲]
