In this chapter, we are interested in studying the use of the graphical modality (digital sketch and document annotations) as a tool for collective design and remote communication. This study takes place in the framework of a 3 months long collaborative architectural design studio, gathering students from Belgium and France to remotely work together in 3 small groups. The study focuses on the role of the graphical modality inside synchronous remote meetings supported by the Distributed Collaborative Design Studio (DCDS). The DCDS enables multi- modal real-time remote exchanges, and aims at remotely re-creating the conditions of co-present meetings. This environment associates a videoconference tool (sup- porting verbal and non-verbal communication) and an original real-time shared digital hand-drawn sketches system (supporting graphical communication). We identify the types of digital annotations made on the imported document (thanks to the electronic pen), as well as their role in the cognitive design processes and in the collaborative and communication processes. We also identify the different practices of digital sketching, in regard to each group and its collaborative strate- gies. We discuss the utility of the graphical modality as an efficient support for collaborative synchronous activities and show that the DCDS environment sup- ports different strategies of collaborative design (co-design and distributed de- sign). We conclude on recommendations for improving the system and for design- ing sketch-based collaborative environments. [less ▲]

In this paper, we present an original environment, the Distributed Collaborative Design Studio (DCDS) which allows multimodal real-time remote exchanges, and which aims at re-creating remotely the conditions of co-present meetings. Nowadays, the BIM (Building Information Modeling) paradigm is a central topic in the CAAD community. Next to the commercial solutions, the IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) have emerged as the best open standard candidate for BIM interoperability. Despite the efforts of the community for promoting IFC over the last 15 years, it seems that its practical adoption in real-life projects has been very limited. The goal of this article is to explore how useful IFC can be today and to provide the reader with some advice for an effective adoption of IFC. Over the last year, we have conducted a project aiming at acquiring a sound understanding of IFC. It was made of two complementary investigations. On one hand, we have focused on the commercial modeling tools and the IFC support they were offering. On the other hand, we have focused on the IFC-based software developments. We have developed a tool converting IFC files into a dedicated thermal assessment based model. We will summarize the experience we have acquired in this project into some advice for users migrating to IFC. Our goal is to confront the practical aspects of the IFC developments, with both the theoretical ambitions and the commercial support currently available. [less ▲]

Pour répondre au défi énergétique, les règlementations thermiques sur les bâtiments sont de plus en plus exigeantes. Les variables prises en compte sont de plus en plus nombreuses et les méthodes de calcul de plus en plus complexes. Nous avons donc besoin de modèles de bâtiment sémantiquement riches, détaillés et précis pour vérifier le respect des exigences réglementaires. Dans cet article, nous discutons l’utilisation du format IFC pour alimenter un logiciel réglementaire d’évaluation de la performance énergétique des bâtiments. Nous présentons les difficultés rencontrées à la fois du point de vue de la modélisation du bâtiment et du point de vue du développement d’un tel outil. [less ▲]

As part of the overhauling of the building energy efficiency regulations (following European directive 2002/91/CE), the Wallonia and Brussels-Capital Region commissioned the LUCID to develop an optional 3D graphic encoding module to be integrated with the core energy efficiency computation engine developed by Altran Europe. Our contribution consisted mostly in analyzing the target users’ needs and representations (ergonomics, UI, interactions) and implementing a bespoke 3D CAD modeler dedicated to thermal models of buildings taking into account the various geometrical and relational constraints specific to thermal modeling. Our research is embedded in the framework of the development of free-hand drawing-based computer assisted architectural design environment. In this paper, we study the activity of drawings duplication, observed during the paper changes in the phase of preliminary sketching. We aim at identifying the impacts of two digital sketches environments, with or without drawings interpretation, on this activity and on the graphical productions. We observe six activities, two with paper-pencil and four distributed on our two prototypes, and draw some operational conclusions for the development of software designed to support the architectural sketches in the preliminary design stage. We will first describe our previous works on sketch-based support tools for the preliminary design phases and the context of these researches. The next chapter declares the concrete objectives of our approach, then the methodology of sketches analysis we propose is presented with a concrete example, and finally the last section is dedicated to the expected results and specifications of a sketch-based support tool that would follow our framework. This paper introduces new supporting tools in the field of distant collaborative design, namely DCDS and CRTI-weB. These prototypes respectively support: the early stages of design, through the support of the crucial initial step of free-hand sketches shared in real-time, and the asynchronous collaborative activities. The main goal of this paper is to propose the use of these innovative tools as an efficient and realistic way of managing long distance collaboration, to effectively serve the designers’ needs. This proposition is analyzed and questioned through a real-size experiment featuring 30 architecture and architectural-engineering students, working together in real-time in different locations (Belgium and France). This experiment and the necessary survey open up interesting fields of investigation, such as the relevance of the proposed devices in supporting distant collaborative design in architecture and the benefit this represents for students to merge the IT aspects and the design studio. The methodology and the replicability are analyzed to increase the level and quality of formation of our students and, finally, a critique of the tools confirms a benefit for the developing teams. The goal of this research is to propose an integrated approach to incorporate structural engineering concerns into architectural schematic designs for timely and well-informed decision making. This is done through a platform that is based on two software prototypes, EsQUIsE for capturing and interpreting architectural sketches, and StAr for assisting engineers during conceptual structural design. An integrated information model is provided for communication. Given the dissimilar “quality” of the information managed by both prototypes, sketch interpretation mechanisms are also required to “tune-up” communications for bringing the sketch to a precise structural engineering definition. As a result, the engineer can propose feasible structural systems earlier than usual. [less ▲]

Architects use freehand sketches in the initial stages of their design work because they prove to be the best adapted media for handling and expressing their preliminary ideas. Therefore, to help designers in their inventive work, a means for inputting and interpreting their sketches was needed.We propose a multi-agent approach to attain that goal. In this paper, we describe the operations of a multi-agent system for the on-line recognition of sketches. This system is currently integrated into the EsQUIsE prototype, a demo program for inputting, analysing and interpreting architectural design sketches. [less ▲]
