Agronomists often underestimate the damage inflicted by the orange wheat blossom midge, Sitodiplosis mosellana (Géhin), a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) pest. The main risk arises when the emergence of the adult midges coincides with wheat ear emergence. The emergence of adult midges was monitored in Belgium over four years and analysed against climate data, establishing the significance of specific rainfall events as triggers for the final phase of development prior to emergence. This discovery, combined with experience from previous models, was incorporated into a new forecasting model, described in this paper. The new model consists of three separate phases. The first phase comprised a temperature accumulation of 250 degree-days (DD) above 3°C, starting from 1 January. Once this initial condition is satisfied, the second phase starts, and it lasts until the occurrence of a double signal consisting of a rise in the mean daily temperature up to 13°C, followed by rainfall. This rainfall event triggers an accumulation phase of 160 DD above 7°C. Once this last condition is met, the adults emerge. [less ▲]

Varietal resistance is an effective control method against orange wheat blossom midge, Sitodiplosis mosellana (Géhin). The determination of the resistance degree through field trials is hindered by the homogeneity lack of the exposure to the insects due to the variation in the date of heading of various varieties. To overcome this obstacle, a novel method has been developed, where the varieties sown in containers are placed in greenhouse at the approach of heading, and covered with a veil. Starting from the appearance of first ears, and for ten days, young adults of S. mosellana are released into the se enclosures. The degree of resistance is measured from the number of larvae that developed in the ears. This easy, economical and reliable method, benefits from the recent advances of knowledge in the biological cycle of S. mosellana, which allow to induce the emergence of young adults ready to lay eggs over several weeks. Root chicory (Cichorium intybus var. sativum) is a biennial crop, but is harvested for root inulin at the end of the first growing season before flowering. However, cold temperatures might vernalize seeds or plantlets, leading to incidental early flowering and hence understanding the molecular basis of vernalization is important. A MADS-box sequence was isolated by RT-PCR and named FLC-LIKE1 (CiFL1) because of its phylogenetic positioning within the same clade as the floral repressor Arabidopsis FLOWERING LOCUS C (AtFLC). Moreover, overexpression of CiFL1 in Arabidopsis caused late flowering and prevented up-regulation of the AtFLC target FLOWERING LOCUS T gene by photoperiod, suggesting functional conservation between root chicory and Arabidopsis. Like AtFLC in Arabidopsis, CiFL1 was repressed during vernalization of seeds or plantlets of chicory, but repression of CiFL1 was unstable whether the post-vernalization temperature was favorable to flowering or whether it devernalized the plants. Instability of CiFL1 repression might be linked to bienniality of root chicory versus the annual life cycle of Arabidopsis. However, reactivation of AtFLC was also observed in Arabidopsis when a high temperature treatment was given straight after seed vernalization, erasing the promotive effect of cold on flowering. Cold-induced downregulation of a MADS-box floral repressor and its reactivation by high temperature thus appear as conserved features of the vernalization and devernalization responses in distant species.This article is protected by copyright.
