This presentation is talking about the typology and the evolution of different techniques to build roofs wooden frames in Europe from the 11th century to the industrial Revolution. Some regional aspects such as the type of wood, the lifting process, are described inside this typo chronology established with the help of dendrochronology and international exchanges during a European project "Culture 2000" from 2007 to 2009.

The development of a comparative approach between the evaluation of the quantity of timber used in a roof frame and the volume of wood present in this same attic allows the acquisition of information about the economical, technical and social contexts in which a timber frame was drawn up. By carrying out this kind of comparison in a systematic way in twenty-tree religious mosan buildings (Belgium and Netherlands), it’s possible to trace, step by step, thanks to dendrochronologic dating of the attics since 12th until 18thcentury, the causes and consequences which influence the methods of constructions of the carpenters. In parallel, the confrontation of this result with the volumes of iron used in the attics reveals the growing importance of this material in function of the time and of the architectural principles. This part of the study was enriched by archeometallurgic analyses intended to identify the process of reduction employed to produce this metal with the aim to measure the possible influence of iron process innovations on the use of iron in the medieval and modern frames, knowing that Wallonia knew from the end of the Middle Ages the early development of the indirect iron process instead of the direct iron process. The development of a new comparative approach establishing a link between the evaluation of the quantity of barks used in a roof frame and the volume of wood present in this same attic allows the acquisition of essential information for the apprehension of the economical, the technical and the social contexts in which a timber frame was drawn up. By carrying out this kind of comparison in a systematic way in about thirty attics of religious buildings dispersed in the Walloon region (Belgium), the evolution of these contexts develops step by step since 12th until 18thcentury and highlights phenomena which influence the methods of constructions of the carpenters, like the appearance of the saw or the rarefaction of the forest resources. The confrontation of this result with the evolution of the volume of iron considered in the attics reveals the catch of importance of this material in function of the time and of the architectural principles. Iron appears in the roof frames of our areas in the same time that the advent of the Gothic architecture in link with the increase of the roof’s dimensions. Its employment generalizes then knows a real expansion at the 17th century because of the rarefaction of the forest resources but also because the preindustrial techniques allow it. [less ▲]

The typo-typology, with 263 draws on the scale 1:200 is organised in 67 groups or famillies based on the type of design and technical solution adopted by ancient carpenters. Maps, time scales, references on the buildings and sources are editied to complete the information. [less ▲]

The study of roof frames on Poitiers cathedral is espacially difficult regarding the number of phases from medieval parts to restorations during 18th century. Due to a important dendrochronological analysis, it was possible to establish that most of the original medieval parts of roofs remains despite the fact that archives said that the roof was "rebuilt" during the 18th century. In this context, Poitiers roofs became a important "jalon" for the general typo-chronology of roofs in Western France. [less ▲]
