This paper presents an experimental–numerical study on the behaviour of High Strength Steel (HSS) columns at elevated temperature, both on Circular Hollow Sections (CHS) and on a Concrete Filled Tube (CFT). The measured yield strength of the circular sections was in the order of 820 MPa. In detail, three HSS CHS and a HSS CFT were tested under the standard ISO fire with constant eccentric compression applied load. The evolution of temperature and deformation patterns were measured by means of a comprehensive instrumentation made of thermocouples and displacement transducers. Numerical analyses were performed and compared with experimental data by employing stress–strain relationships of carbon steel at elevated temperatures provided by the Eurocodes associated to two different sets of reduction factors: i) those provided by the Eurocodes valid up to S460 steel grades; and ii) those proposed in the literature and based on tests on HSS. The ATTEL project (Performance-Based approaches for high strength tubular columns and connections during earthquake and fire loadings) aims at developing performance-based design approaches where the capacity design of steel grades up to S690 and S700MC – widely used in seismic engineering to avoid brittle failure and ensure ductile behaviour – will be extended to high strength steel circular hollow section structures to prevent failure and collapse under both earthquake and fire loading. Within this research projects, fire resistance tests have been performed on 4 columns, 4 beam-to-column joints and 3 column bases. The main features and results of these tests are presented here. This paper presents the results of a global comparison between high strength steel and normal steel circular tube used to build steel and composite columns submitted to static loading, in regards with the economic aspects. The comparison is based on an optimum design taking into account the strength, stability and stiffness conditions of Eurocode 3 and 4. The automatic implementation of the algorithms allows achieving a high amount of case studies, covering the realistic possibilities of build columns. The investigations are realized on simple columns, columns included in braced or un-braced frames and whole frames. The field of application of high strength steel (vs normal steel), regarding the total cost of the member, is provided in a chart clearly indicating where the use of high strength steel becomes economic. In many structures, the use of high strength steel (HSS), i.e. with an elastic strength higher than 460MPa, offers an economical benefit in comparison with normal steel (NS). The reason relies mainly on the fact that the cost increases slower than the strength. Moreover, structures using HSS are usually lighter than the ones made of NS leading to a reduction of the costs related to the transportation, fabrication and painting. However, as the stiffness of HSS structures is smaller than the one of NS structures, the second-order effects and, consequently, the serviceability requirements considerably limit the advantages of the use of HSS. The interrelation between the advantages and the drawbacks of HSS leads to the complicate question of knowing whether there is an economic interest of using HSS instead of NS for structural members. This question has not yet been adequately considered in the literature. The present work aims at investigating building frames with steel and/or composite columns (made of circular steel tubes) with the objective of defining the domains where the use of HSS is economically interesting. Two topics will be addressed: (1) to provide a general view of the economic benefit of the use of HSS; (2) to establish the basis for choosing the material (HSS or NS) for framed structures at the pre-design stage.
