The quality valuation of wheat is based on characteristics like yield, specific weight, protein content and protein quality. Until now. the starch properties are rarely considered as a quality criterion. In this study, we showed the influence of wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.) and culture year on the intrinsic properties of starch, extracted from European wheat grown in the same conditions. For example, starch damage varied from 13.2 to 19.9 CDU in function of the cultivars and contribution of the B-type starch granules (<10 mu m) to the total volume ranged from 11.6% to 29.9%. Starch viscosity at 95 degrees C, characterized with alpha-amylase inactivation by 2 mM AgNO3 addition. varied from 276.5 to 351.5 BU with the wheat cultivars. It is apparent from this study that starch properties were principally influenced by the wheat cultivar and slightly by the culture year. A good relationship between the pasting properties of whole flour and starch were finally established, showing the important role of starch in the whole flour viscosity. A thorough working knowledge of starch properties could lead to an appropriate selection of wheat cultivar, well-adapted to industrial end uses, without encountering processing or end-products quality problems and with most cost-competitive production. In Belgium results of many trials carried out during the last seven years show the possibility of changing timing of nitrogen application with dose reduction during tillering and transfering this amount to flag leeaf application; with this nitrogen dressing, grain proteins are higher and lodging and diseases risks are lower. Take-all of wheat caused by the soil-borne fungus Gaeumannomyces graminis var. Tritici (Ggt) is known world-wide as a major yield-limiting factor. In Belgium, the Take-all disease is not very well known. A take-all survey has been set up in 1999 in Belgium in collaboration between the Agricultural University of Gembloux and Monsanto where goals were to quantify the disease in the main cereal areas and to study the main factors influencing take-all development. From 1994 to 1996, trials have been carried out in Gembloux (Belgium) to evaluate the agronomical value of hybrid wheat varieties and to determine the best adapted growing conditions for these new wheats. These experiments show that the best hybrids have a yield potential hyghly superior to classical varieties. In order to improve the cost-effectiveness of hybrid wheat crops, a reduction in seed rate may be possible together with changes in nitrogen fertilisation, if the results of preliminary studies are confirmed.

[less ▲]
