Various numerical differentiation methods have been developed to compute an approximated derivative of the signal from its discrete values. Amongst them, one of the most commonly applied is the finite difference method. Particularly in the case of experimental data, substantial noise or imprecision may be present in the signal. And here is the crux of the matter: straightforward schemes with short-differentiation steps will amplify this noise, often so much that the result appears to be unusable. While increasing the differentiation step has the positive effect of decreasing the noise, it also has two adverse effects: it produces a time shift compared with what would have been expected, and it introduces distortion by broadening and flattening the narrow features. The present study will focus on the moving-average filter on one hand, and on differentiation by some usual finite difference schemes on the other hand. Amongst relevant parameters, the influence of the sampling period and the differentiation step will be examined, in particular regarding their consequence on the time-accuracy and the noise filtering effect of the considered methods. Experimental testing may be used to demonstrate the fire resistance of building construction elements. In order to allow comparing the results of tests made in different laboratories on various types of elements, the tests have to be performed under well-defined standardised conditions. Such standards define the heating and loading conditions, but also the performance criteria that have to be applied to measure the fire resistance duration. In Europe, the procedure that leads to the classification of building construction elements with regards to fire resistance involves a two level process. In the first stage, one or several tests are performed by a laboratory that must have accreditation according to ISO 17025, and one test report is issued for each test. Thereafter, a competent body will compile the necessary test reports and issue a classification report, the results of which can be used by the different stakeholders of the construction process, e.g. by authorities having jurisdiction. For the loadbearing performance, it appears that different logical combinations of the criteria are considered in the test standard and in the classification standard, leading to a inextricable situation. This situation has to be fixed in order to lead to a complete credible and applicable system. In order to provide scientific evidence about the consequences of adopting one or the other of both loadbearing definitions, the results of 46 tests performed in the fire resistance lab of the University of Liege in the recent years are analysed in this paper. The processing of these rules requires that specific measurements are carried out on joints between panels during the test. When a set of tests has been realised on panels of different thicknesses, but no measurement has been carried out on joints during these tests, the relevance of the following processing is analysed : 1. redo only the tests on panels of minimum and maximum thicknesses and carry out the measurement on joints ; 2. deduce the extended height allowed for these tests ; 3. interpolate these results to panels of intermediate thicknesses. Les nouveaux bâtiments industriels doivent répondre aux prescriptions de l'Annexe 6 de l'Arrêté Royal du 7 juillet 1994 fixant les Normes de Base en matière de prévention contre l'incendie auxquelles les bâtiments nouveaux doivent satisfaire. Cette réglementation stipule que les bâtiments industriels sont classés en fonction de la charge calorifique caractéristique, laquelle est la charge calorifique totale par unité de surface au sol corrigée par un facteur de combustion m, d'une valeur comprise entre zéro et un, qui tient compte de la combustion totale ou partielle des matériaux. La norme NBN EN 1991-1-2:2003 (Eurocode 1) indique que le facteur de combustion est égal à 0,8 dans le cas de matériaux principalement cellulosiques, mais cette norme ne donne pas de directives concernant la valeur de m pour les autres matériaux. La présente recherche a pour objet la détermination expérimentale du coefficient de combustion m de 6 marchandises courantes. [less ▲]

The ATTEL project (Performance-Based approaches for high strength tubular columns and connections during earthquake and fire loadings) aims at developing performance-based design approaches where the capacity design of steel grades up to S690 and S700MC – widely used in seismic engineering to avoid brittle failure and ensure ductile behaviour – will be extended to high strength steel circular hollow section structures to prevent failure and collapse under both earthquake and fire loading. Within this research projects, fire resistance tests have been performed on 4 columns, 4 beam-to-column joints and 3 column bases. The main features and results of these tests are presented here.
