[more ▼] Actually the number of pet foods for growing dogs is increasing, so that the choice is becoming more and more difficult. The specific feeding of puppies of large and giant breeds is documented in many studies. The aim of the present paper is to summarise the main studies related to skeletal disorders in the growing dog in order to avoid feeding errors by the practitioner. The requirements of the growing dogs are reviewed along with the development of the main orthopaedic diseases. Then the nutrients to be taken into consideration in the feeding of the growing dogs are discussed. Finally a comparison between different pet foods for growing dog shows a largely variable composition. Practical applications are made to compare the nutrient supplies from different foods to dogs of medium and large breeds. It is often difficult for the vets in practice to compare different premium foods. The ingredients sources used in diet formulation remain a criterion to indirectly evaluate the quality. A judicious choice of feedstuffs directly influences palatability and digestibility of each diet. The present paper aims to describe the different nutrient sources used in the premium foods industry. Each nutrient and its sources are presented separately starting by protein, fat and carbohydrates and ending with vitamins and minerals. New types of pet foods as premium or super-premium appeared in order to meet more closely the requirements of dogs and cats and the wishes of their owners. The present paper aims to describe the different forms of pet foods along with their main characteristics. The major trends of petfood market, the concept of premium foods and their characteristics will also be presented. Finally, palatability tests and digestibility trials will be explained.
