Recent events such as natural catastrophes or terrorism attacks have highlighted the necessity to ensure the structural integrity of buildings under an exceptional event. According to Eurocodes and some other national design codes, the structural integrity of civil engineering structures should be guaranteed through appropriate measures and one way to guarantee it is to ensure an appropriate robustness of the structure, which may be defined as the ability of a structure to remain globally stable in case of exceptional event leading to local damages. However, although global design approaches are provided in modern codes and standards, no easy-to-apply practical guidelines are provided. The present paper reflects recent researches realised at the University of Liege with the scope of proposing such practical guidelines for the activation of alternative load path in the structure, design strategy generally leading to the most economical solutions. The aim of “HSS-SERF” project was to investigate and evaluate the seismic performance of dual-steel building frames, realized from two different steel grades: Mild Carbon Steel (MCS) and High Strength Steel (HSS). A comprehensive set of dual-steel frames (moment resisting, concentrically and eccentrically braced) were designed, which allowed the identification of realistic member sizes for both MCS and HSS components. Several practical solutions for bolted and welded beam-to-column joints were identified and designed. Further, an extensive numerical program was carried out for the seismic performance evaluation of frames. The ductility and over-strength demands, and q-factors associated with different performance levels were evaluated. Furthermore, experimental and numerical investigations were carried out on joint assemblies and components. Guidelines were elaborated for the conceptual design and PBD of dual-steel frames under seismic actions, and the technical and economic efficiency of dualsteel structures vs. conventional ones were finally evaluated. The main outcomes of the project consist in: (i) development and characterisation in terms of global ductility and over-strength demands of dual-steel frames with composite columns (innovative solutions in European context); (ii) development of design recommendations; (iii) proposal of innovative solutions for beam-to-column joints with composite columns; (iv) recommendation for weld details and appropriate component method design approaches; (v) evaluation of technical and economic efficiency of the dual-steel approach. Within the RFCS project RobustImpact an experimental campaign, aimed at investigating the behaviour of framed steel and concrete composite structures under accidental loading conditions, was planned. The residual strength of the damaged member after an impact as well as the dynamic interaction of the member with the surrounding structure will be experimentally investigated. The activation of alternate load paths will be also studied through tests on 3D slab and 2Dbeam systems. Additional tests on composite joints, beam-to-column joints, column bases and T-stub tests under high speed loading and impact loading will contribute at investigating the influences of strain rate effect on the deformation capacity of the connections.This document collects the drawings prepared by the above mentioned partners for producing the test specimens. A configuration of beam-to-column joint with circular hollow section columns is proposed. A vertical plate, called through-plate, passing through the column is used to support the beams. In order to facilitate connecting the beams, two horizontal plates, each side of the column, are welded to the upper side of the through-plate. The lower flanges of the steel beams are connected to the horizontal plates by bolts, and the upper flanges are attached to the concrete slab by shear connections. The joint is considered as hinges in the construction phase while semi-rigid and partial strength can be adopted for the joint behaviour during the exploitation time. A development on the through-plate component of the joint is presented in this paper. Global behaviour of the joint under hogging moment and shear force is analysed leading to a mechanical model of the through-plate component. Using the elastic buckling theory of plates, the analytical formulas for critical stresses of the through-plate are obtained. The coefficients taking into account boundary conditions, material plasticity and geometrical imperfection are determined by finite element analysis. The proposed model is validated by experimental results showing a good accuracy. The design guideline for the component is finally provided for the practical purpose. [less ▲]

This paper presents a study realised at Liège University on the behaviour of the rectangular end-plate in bending and the bolt in tension components met in circular tube-to- circular tube connections and in circular tubular column bases. Analytical formulas for the mentioned components are firstly proposed considering different yield line patterns for the end-plate. Then the results predicted through the proposed analytical approach are validated through comparisons to experimental and finite element results. Finally, the application of the proposed approach for the prediction of the strength of tube-to-tube joints and also for the prediction of the bolt force of column bases is demonstrated. [less ▲]

Eurocode 4 is the European design code for composite construction; in its so-called EN 1994-1-1 version, the design of “non-sway buildings” is mainly covered. As a result, EC4 focuses on the check of structural elements like beams, columns, slabs and joints. However, in the last years, the construction of taller buildings and larger industrial halls without wind bracing systems tends to make global instability a relevant failure mode, which is not well covered by Eurocode 4. Recently, intensive experimental, numerical and theoretical investigations have been carried out at Liège University. The latter aimed at improving the knowledge in the field of sway composite building frames and at developing appropriate design rules. The rotational behavior of the beam-to-column composite joints is one of the key aspects of the problem to which a special attention has been paid. This paper reflects investigations carried out at Liège University on this topic. In particular, an innovative simplified analytical method to predict the ultimate loading factor and the associated collapse mode of both steel and composite frames subjected to static loadings is presented. This paper presents a test program on bolted flange plate connections used in circular tubular structures. In the tested joints, the connected tubular elements are made of high strength steel (TS590) whilst normal steel grade (S355) is used for the flanges. The tests were performed under monotonic loadings to obtain the mechanical properties of the connections and under cyclic loadings to characterise the behaviour of these connections for low cycle and high cycle fatigue. The test results are first presented herein, including a critical analysis of the latter; then, designmethods available in literature are applied for the tested configurations with the objective to investigate the accuracy of these methods through comparisons with the experimental results. This paper presents an experimental–numerical study on the behaviour of High Strength Steel (HSS) columns at elevated temperature, both on Circular Hollow Sections (CHS) and on a Concrete Filled Tube (CFT). The measured yield strength of the circular sections was in the order of 820 MPa. In detail, three HSS CHS and a HSS CFT were tested under the standard ISO fire with constant eccentric compression applied load. The evolution of temperature and deformation patterns were measured by means of a comprehensive instrumentation made of thermocouples and displacement transducers. Numerical analyses were performed and compared with experimental data by employing stress–strain relationships of carbon steel at elevated temperatures provided by the Eurocodes associated to two different sets of reduction factors: i) those provided by the Eurocodes valid up to S460 steel grades; and ii) those proposed in the literature and based on tests on HSS. The Eurocodes recognise robustness as a way to ensure the structural integrity of a building frame subjected to an unforeseen event and therefore to avoid a so-called “progressive failure” mode in extreme loading situations. However few practical guidelines exist nowadays which would allow a designer to design a structure accordingly. Within the European RFCS ROBUSTFIRE project, the behaviour of steel and composite car parks subjected to localised fire leading to a column loss was investigated. Under such a scenario, the beam-to-column joints play a key role in the global structural response. Indeed, these joints, initially loaded in bending, may be subjected to elevated temperatures and to combined axial load “N” and bending moment “M”. In this paper, a methodology to predict the mechanical response of bolted composite beam-to-column joints at elevated temperatures under M-N is presented and validated through comparison to experimental tests conducted at the University of Coimbra. Recent events such as natural catastrophes (tsunami, hurricane, …) or terrorism attacks have highlighted the necessity of ensuring the structural integrity of buildings under exceptional events with the objective to save the life of the occupants and of the safety services (fireman, ambulance man, …) and also to avoid collateral damages to the adjoining buildings. The partial collapse of the Ronan Point Tower in 1968 in UK is considered as the starting point of the interest in the structural integrity of buildings but more recent catastrophes in the last decade such as the terrorist attack of the World Trade Center towers in 2001 or the earthquake/tsunami in Fukushima in 2011 have increased the interest of the engineering community and also of the population in this topic. According to different national and international design codes, the structural integrity of civil engineering structures should be ensured through appropriate measures but, in most of the cases, no precise practical guidelines on how to achieve this goal are provided. In the present report, some definitions are first given. Existing codes and standards are then reviewed and main conclusions are drawn on their adequacy to the present needs of practitioners. From this analysis, general and specific research needs within CIDECT are identified. These ones are detailed in two dedicated sections respectively on buildings and trusses. A summary table draws the main conclusions in terms of future required CIDECT investments. Finally some references to literature are listed. [less ▲]

In case a vehicle impacts a building frame, one or several columns may be damaged or even completely destroyed. Nowadays, it is a concern to mitigate the risk of progressive collapse of the whole structure further to such a localised exceptional event. Although this robustness requirement is part of several design codes, very few precise practical guidelines are provided, especially as far as dynamic failures are concerned. The present research focuses on building frames suffering the loss of one internal column. The dynamic response is more specifically investigated, with the aim to understand this behaviour in order to eventually derive simplified procedures for robustness assessment. This paper first briefly presents the main previous achievements related to the prediction of the static response of a plane frame suffering a column loss. The investigations into the dynamic behaviour are then summarised, which constitutes the core topic of the paper. For sake of simplicity, the dynamic response is described using a basic substructure that was proved to show many similarities in behaviour with a global frame losing a column. A simplified model is finally developed for the prediction of the considered system dynamic response. [less ▲]

High Strength Steel (HSS) characterized by yield strength ranging between 500MPa to 700MPa has been available for many years. However, its use in onshore engineering is quite restrictive. Reasons were threefold: i) Eurocodes covered steels with yield strength up to 460MPa; ii) higher costs than regular steel; iii) lack of conceptual design with HSS. Nonetheless very recently, there has been a growing trend for the use of HSS in tubular structures thanks to Eurocode 3 Part 1-12 (2006), that extended its scope to steel grades up to S690/S700MC. Along this line, the HITUBES project intended to develop performance-based designs and assessment procedures to make full use of HSS tubes up to S700MC for structures subject also to extreme repeated loads; in fact Eurocode 3 Part 1-12 imposes many limitations at the material, structural and design level. The ambitious targets are to increase the performance of tubular structures, reduce weights, construction and operating costs. The project covered the period 01/07/2008-31/12/2011, and main research work focussed on several aspects listed herein: literature survey; selection of finite element-based and identification dynamic analysis codes; selection of realistic Case Studies and FE analysis for the evaluation of actions and stresses; structural identification and health monitoring of a cable-stay and arch footbridges; tests planning and execution including welding procedure specifications; simulations of welded and bolted connections under monotonic, low-cycle and high-cycle fatigue loadings; simulation of Case studies and reliability analysis for quantification of realistic performance scenarios; SWOT analysis and monitoring of project activities.
