Experimental design is necessary to identify major experimental parameters linked to a process in order to optimize it and reduce costs. It also helps to reduce the number of experiments and analyze data statistically. This work aims to present some possibilities of how experimental design may be applied in the field of pharmaceutical powders production by spray drying. Depending on the application, powders need particular size, morphology, purity, crystallinity or polymorphism. All these characteristics may be influenced by process parameters and should be controlled to reach pharmaceutical requirements. [less ▲]

We describe how the contribution of crystallographic texture to the anisotropy of the resistivity of polycrystalline samples can be estimated by averaging over crystallographic orientations through a geometric mean approach. The calculation takes into account the orientation distribution refined from neutron diffraction data and literature values for the single crystal resistivity tensor. The example discussed here is a melt-cast processed Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+ (Bi-2212) polycrystalline tube in which the main texture component is a <010> fiber texture with relatively low texture strength. Experimentally-measured resistivities along the longitudinal, radial, and tangential directions of the Bi-2212 tube were compared to calculated values and found to be of the same order of magnitude. Calculations for this example and additional simulations for various texture strengths and single crystal resistivity anisotropies confirm that in the case of highly anisotropic phases such as Bi-2212, even low texture strengths have a significant effect on the anisotropy of the resistivity in polycrystalline samples. Superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ tubes and rods manufactured at Nexans SuperConductors gmbh are known to achieve excellent performances despite apparently weak texture. A full texture characterization of the bulks has been performed at different scales, using X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction. The texture experiments confirm that samples exhibit weak textures and reveal some differences between local and macroscopic texture. When investigating how the physical properties might be affected by texture, it was observed that the critical current density Jc is not much influenced by the direction of measurement, while the normal state electrical resistivity displays a ratio of 2.3 between the resistivity along the sample axis and the resistivity along the radial direction. These observations are qualitatively consistent with the texture results. A quantitative study based on the geometric mean of the resistivity tensor compares the experimental data with values calculated from the measured orientation distribution and literature single crystal data. It turns out that, despite the weak texture, a large fraction of the observed resistivity anisotropy is explained by texture effects, because of the very strong anisotropy between the resistivity along the c-axis and the resistivity in the ab-planes. Lastly, the influence of sample oxygenation on Tc and Jc has been studied. In these bulks, Tc as a function of oxygen content follows a bell-shaped curve, confirming literature results for other superconducting samples. Jc is also influenced by the oxygen content; interestingly, the maximum Jc is not obtained for the same oxygen content as the maximum Tc. [less ▲]

Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ HTSC superconductor is characterized by a very strong normal-state resistivity anisotropy, with ρc/ρab typically above 104. The aim of this study is to use Quantitative Texture Analysis from neutron diffraction measurements to estimate the orientation effect on the macroscopic resistivity (ρM) in melt-cast bulk Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ superconductors. Our approach uses the geometric mean (GMA) [1] of the single crystal resistivity tensor (ρSC) weighted by the Orientation Distribution Function (ODF) to quantitatively estimate the macroscopic resistivity tensor of the samples. The ODF is obtained from neutron Combined Analysis [2], using the E-WIMV algorithm of the MAUD software. The GMA applies to the rank-two resistivity tensor of the orthorhombic space group considered tetragonal due to the small difference of a- and b-axes of the phase, with only two independent tensor components. We relate a relatively good agreement between measured and calculated macroscopic resistivity ratios. [less ▲]

Multilayered YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) thick films were coated on silver substrates by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) followed by heat treatment. A butanol-based YBCO suspension is used instead of the common acetone-iodine combination. Tests with several dispersing agents reveal that a branched polyethyleneimine (PEI) dispersant develops large positive surface charge on suspended YBCO particles. As a demonstration of the performance of this new suspension formulation, a 12-layer 100 μm-thick YBCO coating was deposited on an Ag tube. The superconducting transition is sharp with onset critical temperature at 92 K. The sample can shield a magnetic field of ~1.3 mT at 77 K, i.e., the best value so far for an YBCO coating on a metallic substrate. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. [less ▲]
