[less ▲]

José Muñoz and Carlos Sampayo’s Constancio y Manolo (1976) is their seventh story featuring New York-based detective Alack Sinner. It depicts a Spanish family whose patriarch fought for the Republicans during the Civil War. It also mentions events that took place when Constancio y Manolo was being made: the US presidential election, the death of Francisco Franco and the consequent fall of Spanish dictatorship, and, albeit implicitly, the rise of a similar military, theocratic, and violent regime in the cartoonists’ native country, Argentina. The graphic style is heterogeneous, the main plot is fragmentary and numerous secondary stories interfere with its development; and yet, we are paradoxically dealing with a highlycoherent work. Muñoz and Sampayo’s poetics of fragments are put in the service of their own worldview, committed to resist against all mechanisms of oppression and expressing a deep empathy for all those left out of “economic progress”. [less ▲]

When critically exploring alternative comics, the various actors participating in the processes of legitimization of the form — including print and broadcast media, festivals, scholars and fans — often privilege a handful of people (Sfar, Trondheim, Ware, Satrapi,…), a small number of publishers (especially L’Association), a few particular formats such as the “graphic novel,” emblematic genres (the memoir and autobiography), or certain geographical areas such as France and/or the United States. And yet, the phenomenon of alternative comics may take a multitude of forms and is resolutely international in scope. Despite this diversity, alternative comics worldwide nevertheless share common objectives. They notably include the challenging of two of the most common critical stances directed against a multitude of “traditional” publishers, namely : their inclination towards ethnocentricity and their cultivation of amnesia. Far from sweeping away the history of the form, alternative comics artists and publishers alike attach great value to the past of the medium and generally embrace it. [less ▲]

Between 2006 and 2007, L’Association have published the three issues of L’Éprouvette. These are, among other, illustrated by thirty-four images that are hugely enlarged fragments of comic’s panels. By comparing this with similar realizations (the exhibition Bande dessinée et Figuration narrative, the column « Cases mémorables » of the journal Les Cahiers de la bande dessinée), this paper asks about what it means reproducing comics’ fragments. It also tries to analyze the role played by these images within the journal and the links with the rest of the content. Endlessly, still by putting it in prospect with the realizations here above mentioned, it tries to see in what extent these images reflect a certain view about the history of the comic. [less ▲]

The comics of Muñoz and Sampayo are full of strange characters who surprise by their enigmatic appearance but do not seem to play a particular role in the overall framework of the story. This essay attempts to determine their nature, how they are articulated within the web formed by all the panels and to analyze how they make sense within the context of the oeuvre in its entirety.
